I'm one of the few who actually enjoy grocery shopping and good grocery stores. It's something I attribute to growing up in my granny's little grocery store and helping out from a young age. My vote was for Sometimes, only because of how large the area is. We do have Aldi here, but the closest one is about 45 min drive one way (in good traffic) which is not worth it. Or Central Market! The only smaller towns that make the cut for possible retirement will have an HEB! It's a non-negotiable. In other words DH, I ain't leaving Texas!

I would, I like grocery shopping when it is for fun. When I went back east you bet your bippy one of my must see activities was Wegmans and Aldi. We have very boring grocery stores in the PNW with the exception of our local produce market (only 2 locations) which has a fantastic bakery and food service area. I found pretzel ice cream cones back east, Hawaiian Punch in green and blue (even though it tasted red), coffee syrup, Friendly’s ice cream cups, and candy bars we don’t get here. I am easily amused. Heck, even Seattle has more interesting food and grocery stores then we have here. I keep hoping we will get an Aldi’s, but I doubt they will ever come this far west.

A Lucky's Supermarket was just remodeled and had a grand reopening and I swear every other post on Next Door is about this store. I did go (it's pretty amazing), but I had to laugh because the store was filled with little old ladies walking around. I think it was big excursion of the week. There is a big remodeled Lucky's in my old town too. Our Raley's turned into a Raley's O.N.E. and turned a lot of people off that are now shopping elsewhere. Makes me sad because it used to be my favorite go-to neighborhood supermarket.

Winco is a great store! Even In Montana the produce was great. I love to shop the little Asian stores and the middle eastern stores. I love grocery shopping.

We rarely get any new grocery stores in my city. I’d love to have a TJs or Aldi to check out.

Yes, we purposely scout new stores. What if I miss good stuff? In the 20 years i've lived in this home, i've seen about 6 new stores open up. Two of them are Mexican markets with awesome prepackaged foods. So of course, I have to try the salsas, agua frescas, etc. I found that I could get a massive tray of cut up fruit for like $17 (minus watermelon, so I have to get a watermelon on the side). I never would have found out if I didn't go into that store - as it's not on the website. In Downtown, when they opened the Ralphs (Kroger), I checked it out, even though I've been to plenty of Ralph's. I was amazed at the service in there. It had a sushi bar, sandwich bar, hot foot bar, salad bar, olive bar, soup bar, cheese bar. They then closed the sandwich bar and opened an ACTUAL sit down (alcohol) BAR. Inside a grocery store? Snooty co workers have told me that this isn't abnormal where they live, but I had not seen anything like that. So yes, I always check out new stores. This is the kind of attitude we should all have!!! And Aldi's is great!! Their frozen crab cakes are better than any crab cakes I am having at Cherry Grove Beach right now!!

We have a new Hy-Vee opening closer to me than the existing one in our area and I’ll absolutely go there once it opens. I LOVE Hy-Vee but the one we currently have isn’t really in an area where I typically go, so to shop there I’d have to go out of my way and that generally isn’t happening. I neither love nor hate Aldi but they too are out of the way and they have a stupid parking lot. I’ll go there every once in a while if ai know they have something I specifically want. We also have Trader Joe’s but every one of their stores is set up stupid and their parking lots are also doubly stupid, so I REALLY have to want something only they have before I’ll break down and go there.
I avoid the regular grocery store chain for our area and only go there as a last resort. I maybe go to that store once every 3-4 months. Most of my grocery shopping is done at Costco first, followed by Target, followed by the grocery store I hate because it’s right next to Target. But once that new Hy-Vee opens, I’ll probably go there once or twice a month because I like the specialty stuff they sell.

Somebody should start a S/O thread where Peas show off their local grocery stores. As an international Pea, I'm curious.

Not too many new grocery stores around here. I do, however, make the 30-mile trek to Wegmans and H-Mart regularly. Other than those, I mostly stick to the same store that's five minutes away.

We don’t get new grocery stores. HEB owns my town and all the surrounding towns. I love grocery shopping but I also love my H-E-B and I am very loyal to them so I’m okay with that. We did get an Aldi's awhile back. I was underwhelmed and never went back.

Is Lidl present on the US market? I like Lidl waaaay better than Aldi. We don't have them in our area, but I have shopped at one in Greece. Are you talking different chains or new store of same chain? I'm talking about new chains. We've had a few chains close out and/or leave the area and a few new chains come into the area in the last few years. Our local Ralphs were the saddest stores ever. I went in once a year for DS's birthday treat box to get a couple flavors of Oreos and Fruit Loops. They closed and have been replaced by an Aldi and Big Lots. I stopped at the Ralphs near a girlfriend's house and was shocked to see a store like you've described. I don't think it had a bar, but could have missed it. They definitely had a sushi bar.

We recently got a Meijers and I went there today. It’s very nice, but will take some getting used to. The front of the store is a wide curvy area with produce, deli, bakery, prepared foods. It’s easy to go right past something that is on your list.

I checked yes.. it would be a major event in my town. We never get anything new.. We don't have Aldi's here but if we did I would probably shop there more than my King's (Krogers).. I think Aldi's tends to be cheaper... I think.

The supermarkets here are very well established, and there are a lot of them, so we haven't had any new ones open for a very long time. The most recent one would be Aldi, but that was over 10 years ago.
They renovated the shopping complex near me last year, and now Coles (where I do all of my shopping) and Aldi are under the same roof. Prior to that, Aldi was in a separate building at the other end of the car park. They have also opened a new Asian grocer opposite Coles, which I was super excited about. But it's a bit small, so I prefer to drive the extra 10 minutes to go to my favourite HUGE Asian grocer, which is also cheaper.

this is a timely thread as Wegmans just opened this past Wednesday in our area. People have been hyped up about it for MONTHS! I don't understand the hype but am gonna go check it out since so many people have said such wonderful things about it.
We had Publix open a few years ago and while i like them, i was underwhelmed. And Aldi/Lidl IMO are terrible.

I do not cook, meal plan or anything like that, but do go to the grocery store pick up a few things and find it interesting. The merchandising systems, the different items and I like see how people shop. I enjoy predicting what they will put in their cart, its like a game. I look at the people and think "organized parent", has a list, kid friendly foods in the cart and lots of ingredients to cook and bake. Of course it is stereotyping and probably not accurate but it can be entertaining.
Now clothes shopping, never. I have my clothes delivered, always.

Especially while I am standing in line waiting to pay, I will look at the neighboring carts and try and figure out what they are going to make with the items they have picked out. Ground beef, tomato, lettuce. Is it taco night or burgers? Fancy cake, steaks and flowers. Maybe a birthday or anniversary. This person has a bunch of cat supplies in their cart, I wonder how many cats they have. This guy has nothing but soda and frozen pizzas. Is it a party, or is he a single guy who eats nothing but pizzas? It gives me something to do other than think uggghhhh, this line is so slow! Once all I was buying was 2 pints of ice cream and 10 boxes of Kleenex. I said to the cashier, don't worry, I'm not going home to eat ice cream and cry all night, it's just a good sale.

I don't shop there as often as I should, but it's fun when I do. The produce is amazing (well, except for Durian when it's in season!). It's fun seeing things I remember from our years overseas. It's worth going to so I hope you are able to get in soon.
