When a new grocery store opens in your area do you check it out?
ALDI came into our county a few years ago and I've still haven't been in one. Same with WinCo.
I did wait impatiently for an Asian grocery store to open after it was delayed with COVID closures and have added it to my regular rotation of stores.
I love checking out different/local grocery stores when we are traveling, but stick to my favorites at home.

I don't think a new grocery store has opened up in my area in a very long time. I'm so bored with the pandemic I totally would check out a new grocery store these days. "Oooh, look at that, they have a sleek black colour scheme for their fruit & veg aisle, fancy!" "Well, well, I've never seen these pasta salad bowls before. And look, they come with a cookie for dessert." "My oh my, real wood panels for the beer & wine section. I'm impressed." "Look at these shopping baskets on wheels. Those look super heavy duty." "I bet they sell wasabi in this store. It just looks like one of those wasabi-selling supermarkets."

I answered that I will always check a new one out, but there hasn't been a new market since the Whole Foods opened on the block where I was living at the time. That was at least 27 years ago (!!!!).
I did check out the Aldi when it opened a few years ago, but it isn't convenient to be a regular market.

Most of the time. . I did check out Winco, Aldis, and the new Asian market when they opened. Aldis is the only one I haven’t been back to. There is a Middle Eastern market that opened a couple of years ago and I’ve never been inside. I don’t cook with those ingredients but I heard they have a pretty good cooked food counter. So they are still on my list to try one day.

No new grocery stores in my area really. We have a rather small local store in my very small town. Then the somewhat larger but also small town a couple miles away has a Target, Walmart and two locations of a regional chain.
The small city a bit further away/or suburbs has all of those and Kroger and Meijer. Some specialty stores (gourmet, meat etc) Maybe other regional stores. There are a couple of Aldis but none close enough that I have checked them out. But I did notice a new location a little closer that I may check out soon.

A Lucky's Supermarket was just remodeled and had a grand reopening and I swear every other post on Next Door is about this store. I did go (it's pretty amazing), but I had to laugh because the store was filled with little old ladies walking around. I think it was big excursion of the week.

We have a ton of grocery stores in our little town (6 that I can think of offhand- Safeway, Aldi, Food Lion, Shopper's, Weis, Giant) and I always go to the one closest to my house. There is one (Weis) that I have never been to, but it isn't new. Our Aldi is small but has good prices on some items.

I hate grocery shopping with the passion of a thousand fiery suns.
I only do order pick up, I never go into grocery stores.
Checking out a new grocery store is not something that would register on my fun scale and so not something I am likely to do.

Are you talking different chains or new store of same chain?
I'll go to same chain new store because they often have great sales.
New store? Depends on how busy it is

They are building a Whole Foods about 20 miles from me. It was delayed for so long due to zoning issues (complaints from neighbors) and possibly Covid. I am excited but it will not be in my regular rotation due to cost.

Yes, we purposely scout new stores. What if I miss good stuff? In the 20 years i've lived in this home, i've seen about 6 new stores open up. Two of them are Mexican markets with awesome prepackaged foods. So of course, I have to try the salsas, agua frescas, etc. I found that I could get a massive tray of cut up fruit for like $17 (minus watermelon, so I have to get a watermelon on the side). I never would have found out if I didn't go into that store - as it's not on the website. In Downtown, when they opened the Ralphs (Kroger), I checked it out, even though I've been to plenty of Ralph's. I was amazed at the service in there. It had a sushi bar, sandwich bar, hot foot bar, salad bar, olive bar, soup bar, cheese bar. They then closed the sandwich bar and opened an ACTUAL sit down (alcohol) BAR. Inside a grocery store? Snooty co workers have told me that this isn't abnormal where they live, but I had not seen anything like that. So yes, I always check out new stores.

I don't think checking out new grocery stores is my idea of fun??
I live in a small town outside of a big one where we have 3 grocery stores and most recently got our first Walmart. Savemart and Raley's are way2expensive for my taste unless I need to grab something quickly from Savemart since it's on my side of the freeway.. so we mainly shop at the Walmart.
If I had my way I'd always drive the ~15 minutes to Winco since I like that store better, and they're cheaper overall if we're already in the city.

I answered 'sometimes' because it really depends on the distance. "In my neighborhood" aka in the town where we live, there aren't any new grocery stores.
But in the Phoenix area in general?? Yes, I will check them out if they're anywhere close to where I'm shopping and I have the time. I've shopped at WinCo a few times, and would like to check out an Aldi's (I think there's at least one around Phoenix somewhere) but usually I stick with my local, in-town stores.
I do like that WinCo sells a lot of things in bulk; our local Frys got rid of the bulk foods section at the beginning of the pandemic (I think the timing was coincidental- they did a big remodel), but WinCo doesn't always have the brands I want for specific things.
eta: there are a few stores I'd STILL like to check out but just haven't gotten around to yet- any of the big Asian markets in Phx or the burbs; Ranch Market- a Hispanic grocery store with a huge deli/restaurant; etc.

One exception - if something new and DIFFERENT opened up, I might check it out. Having said that, a LIDL opened near me in Charlotte and I never once went there, even though I had a year to try it before I moved, and it was 7 minutes from my house. Order pickup all the way, or I send DH who loves it.

It was ok, workers a bit rude, but could have been just past big opening stress. Will go back. Weekend specials seem good, but too busy then. I was gone from home this morning to Aldi in about 40 mins top. Had absolutely everything I wanted this morning.

I said sometimes. It is actually most times, but not always if that includes smaller and specialty stores. We don’t have many large grocery stores/chains open up.
There is a new Asian market near me that I haven’t been in yet and really want to, but it opened in early 2020 and these past 14 months have not been normal.

Right before the pandemic our Aldi opened. I wanted to go check it out but have yet to.
There is a new organic store that opened (Goodwin) and I am going to check them out next week. They opened under some apartments that were built. Not sure what else is going in.

I will nearly always check out new grocery stores, even if I don't continue shopping there.
We are supposed to get some HEB's in this part of DFW next year. I am excited but I'm expecting them to be super crowded for a while.

Lidl shoppers: the small marzipan-filled butter stollen bites they sell around Christmas are like crack. I don't even like marzipan but oh my, I have to refrain from finishing them. Maybe Aldi sells these as well? I'm not sure. I definitely am sure that I do a detour every November to go to a Lidl store just to grab some of these.

Sprouts opened in north Seattle a while ago. I stopped by (it's probably 5-6 miles away) when I was in the area for several different nuts to make granola. I usually buy them prepacked at TJ's as they are by far the least expensive for the nuts I use.
Rather than being able to scoop what I needed into a bag, the bulk items at Sprouts were prepackaged (pandemic, I totally get it) but they were all in full pound packages, and most were FAR beyond their pull dates. Who wants rancid nuts? No thank you.
I was dissapointed and likely won't be back.

If it is close by I will check it out, or if I’m in the area I still go, but I won’t drive far just to go check out a new store. The closest Aldi to me is about 20 minutes away and it took me a long time to finally have an excuse to be in the area to check it out. I liked it but not enough to commit to a 20 minute drive every time when my closest grocery store is within walking distance.
