The neighbor girl offered to drive my DD to school. She goes to high school and her brother is in middle school with my DD. The schools are next door to each other. She will be riding with her five mornings and two afternoons each week. It's only about 5 miles to school. Do I offer her gas money? How much? I dont wanna sound cheap but it doesn't cost me much to drive her myself.

I would offer gas money. Maybe $10/wk?

I'd give her $10-20 a week. It may not cost you much to drive her yourself but you're paying for the convenience of not having to drive her not just for gas money.

Make sure that the law allows her to have 2 minors (unrelated) in her car at her age.

She is going there anyway to drop off her brother, so I don't think a huge amount is needed - $10-$20/week for gas is insane in my opinion - she is going there anyway, and is offering to take your daughter with her. I would probably give her a gift card at Christmas and another at the end of the school year. $20/$25 each time.

We have a similar situation and I do about $20 a month plus a nice gift card at Christmas.

Since she's dropping off your DD at the same time as her brother, I'd offer her $5 a week, maybe more if you're in an area where gas is higher than the average. And then maybe a gift card at the end of the school year?

I agree that she's doing you a favor for your convenience. I would give her $10-20 a week.

If it were my daughter doing the driving, I wouldn't want her taking money from you. There's no need for that since it doesn't cost her anything! And neighbors just help each other out when they can . If you wanted to give her a gift card with a thank you note, that would be a nice gesture though.

We had someone try to join our car pool without offering to do any driving (or pay) "because we were going there anyway" and had an empty seat in the car. There is a huge convenience to have someone else take your kids to school, so I would definitely be offering her gas money and/or a gift card at the end of the school year. For our area, I'd think $20-25 a month would be good.

And could easily un-offer, should she decide there's no point in hauling an extra middle-schooler in her car every day with nothing in return. Maybe she's a lovely girl who just wants to do the OP a favor, but I'd be offering her $10/wk all the same.

Well think of it this way, if you were driving those 7 trips, presumably it would be 10 miles each (assuming you come back home each time). 70 miles a week, even a car with good gas mileage is going to be hard pressed to exceed 20 mpg in town driving. So she's saving you 3.5 gallons a week. With gas prices around $3, that's $10 in actual savings - not even accounting for your time. I think $10 a week is reasonable, I'd probably pay twice that to avoid the morning drop off circus.

I must admit the car time with my kids (both going to school and coming home) is precious to me. If I didn't NEED to have someone else drive, I wouldn't do it. If I NEEDED it, I would offer some type of pay. Part of the issue is I hate waiting on other's schedules or feel rushed by other people. We did carpool one year and I said never again unless it is a true need.

Thanks for your help. I was thinking around $10/week but didn't want to sound cheap. Seems like most of you agree that is ok.

I would definitely offer money so that it's a regular thing and something the neighbor girl won't bail out on at the last minute.
Decide up front the plan if the girl isn't bringing her brother to school that day (for example, if he's sick.) Same thing for the pick up. Kids' schedules change and kids stay after for make up tests, extra tutoring, activities... Also, what is the plan if it's icy or snowy.

Definitely offer. She or her parents could refuse, but at least offer. If refused, something at Christmas. Gas gift card?

I'd give her $10 a week, and have your Daughter treat her to a Starbucks once or twice a month.

Our dd couldn't take other children - non related for awhile after she got her license. In fact she could only have 1 passenger in the car until she turned 17. So, you may want to check that in case there are laws against it. You don't want to have issues later.
