That was so the opposite of where I thought this story was going. I'm thinking they didn't want girls (because, face it, it's always the girls who get dress code violations) in sexy stilettos or something like that. How can they dictate that the girls can't wear sneakers? This is so incredibly stupid.

Dress codes are almost always about forcing stereotypical gender norms on young bodies for no reason other than control.
All that over converse shoes at prom in a pandemic. Principal Lisa Sadler is an asshole and shouldn't be allowed to lead a school. PERIOD.

Didn’t do a lot of good. Maybe some? It scares me how conservative and intolerant (to those unlike them) some young people are because of how they’re raised. I’ve kind of given up on humans. Give me cats. Dogs. Cicadas.

Principal Lisa Sadler is an asshole and shouldn't be allowed to lead a school. PERIOD. I completely agree that it is all about control and enforcing stereotypical gender norms. It is astonishing the lengths schools around here (Texas) will go to for dress codes for no other reason than to exert control over students. My kids' high school had strict prom dress codes and didn't allow sneakers at graduation--what about the kids who only owned sneakers and didn't have the funds to buy dress shoes for a single occasion? I'm seeing boys affected more and more often, though. There was a case recently somewhere in Texas where a boy not allowed to wear nail polish. They eventually got that changed. And there have been multiple cases of boys who weren't allowed to have long hair. It's just so stupid.

That is so stupid. We had prom last week and I told a girl that I liked her blue Nikes - they were a perfect match to her blue dress. Her dress was long and you only caught glimpses of her shoes. Her date wore the same sneakers. It was cute. When I see dumb things like this from admin it makes me wonder if they understand kids at all.

Does she live in a cave? Converse are mainstream and everywhere. Casual and formal events.
Yep. All about control and being the cookie cutter humans they want them to be.
Sorry, people aren't cookies.

My DD literally wore Converse to prom last night. This makes zero sense. What a crappy thing to do to these girls.

Have they not noticed that our current Vice President wears Converse sneakers...
Or is it a way to issue a hidden objection to her?
Either way, shame on them!!

I've chaperoned prom. Those high heels come off and the girls dance barefoot most of the time. Converse are a great choice. Idiot schools.
I changed into Keds at my wedding.

I think some wore sneakers to our prom and graduation in the late 70's. How ridiculous. I hope the kids protest and all show up in Converse to graduation.

I graduated from HS in 90 (outside of Portland, a very liberal area) and girls weren’t allowed to wear pants! I wore shorts under my gown with flats, but my mom was super worried I wasn’t going to be allowed to walk. I didn’t realize at the time who sexist or exclusionary it was, I just didn’t/don’t wear dresses or skirts I didn’t have any in my closet and even though my mom would have gotten me one I refused because I thought it was just a stupid rule. I am glad kids now are more aware and I hope they fight this kind of crap and get support from their parents to change these types of rules.

They also banned tennis shoes from the boys when ds graduated and did not want jeans. We are a rural community, these boys don't have dress shoes or slacks (slacks if they were athletes). Why don't they just let yhe kids be comfortable? I mean, tell them they have to wear more than just underwear, but other than that...

This is absolutely ridiculous. Both my girls wore sparkly Toms for prom.
One dd wore high top Converse with a flattering dress to homecoming. She looked cute. Once or twice she tried on a pair of heels and other dd and I were terrified for her safety and for the safety of others. She cannot be allowed to ambulate in heels.

Women’s dress shoes, even flats, tend to be uncomfortable and cause blisters. (Comfort brands are often more expensive, outside a teenager’s budget.) Heels are also uncomfortable, designed to produce a sway in the hips when walking to add to a woman’s sex appeal. Apparently either of these situations is preferable than a girl wearing ... gasp ... sneakers! I often wonder when administrators make these kinds of asinine decisions - don’t they realize they’re going to end up on national news? It’s like they’re just dying to look stupid at a national level.

I graduated in 1978 and the girls were told if we wore pants we would not be allowed to graduate. About two dozen of us vowed to wear pants. Everyone chickened out but me. Not a word was said but the girls who chickened out said they were afraid they wouldn’t be allowed to graduate. Hell, they might have stopped me from participating in the ceremony but with a 3.85 GPA they sure as hell weren’t going to stop me from getting my diploma. I can’t believe such ridiculous BS is still going on in the 21st century.

Our kids wore everything from dresses and shirts with bow ties to shorts and t-shirts under their gowns. Sandals to dress shoes, and some real funky boots. Our admin was great about just saying to wear appropriate footwear (since we were on turf and the kids had to walk a metal ramp up to a stage) and not to carry anything so their hands would be free and they didn't lose stuff. (They all had their phones, LOL.) It was 86º, but we were on the turf, which adds about 10º of heat. NOBODY NOTICED WHAT THE KIDS WORE UNDER THEIR GOWNS IN A GLOBAL PANDEMIC GRADUATION. I am a proud public school educator, but sometimes we really do stupid shit.
