My mom turns 80 next week. We plan to go away on vacation together when vacationing is safe for her.
I’d like to take her something so I don’t go empty handed. We are going for lunch in the day and I’ll take my girls to see her after school. Dh is having major surgery that afternoon or else we’d be doing a family dinner / bbq together.
I just did flowers for Mother’s Day. Willing to spend a few hundred dollars but not necessary. She prefers experience gifts but right now it’s limited. Our theatre hasn’t opened, etc. She just had major surgery last month and can’t have massages - spine surgery. She loves massages but can’t yet because of her surgery (although probably by July).
At this point she just wants to be able to hug my kids (they’re getting vac on Wednesday - yay) and be inside together (our gov’t still says not yet). She’s going out to dinner (patio seating still) with some friends abs relatives throughout the week. Any ideas?
She enjoys movies, eating out, theatre, reading, knitting. But right now she doesn’t have the patience to do a lot because of her ongoing recovery and her annoyance with the slow vaccine roll out here. It’s like she’s forgotten how to relax.

I think when we're forced to relax, it makes us really itchy to do other things.
What's her favorite food? We signed my mother in law up for "pickle of the month club" because she loved pickles so much. She really enjoyed it.

Manicure? Pedicure? Facial? I don’t know what’s open for you so may be way off.

Does she have a Pandora bracelet you could add charms to?

Pedicure or mani was my suggestion too or maybe a scalp massage.

We gave my parents StoryWorth for Christmas. They send an email each week (you choose the frequency) for a year with questions about their life. They just reply to the email and it goes to you (and others you have added) and back to the company who will turn the responses into a book. They can also add photos.
My mom has a hard time writing so we interview her via Zoom. We have already enjoyed spending time together this way and hearing her stories.

I also like the idea of a story worth book. It would actually be a present for both her as well as you and your siblings.
I wish it would have been around years ago. I missed so many of my mom's stories.

I just got this for my mom and she says she loves it. Just a warning if you click on the link, it will start advertising on Facebook😉. It’s a story in the WWII era told through 24 letters, each letter mailed twice a month. theflowerletters.com/products/the-audrey-rose-lettersI got it 20% off before Mother’s Day so not sure how often they go on sale. They have set dates the letters get mailed so if you needed to have an actual gift you could get a decorative shoebox so that she could keep the letters in one place. I love the idea of this and so far it’s very impressive.

Could you do something like a zoo membership she could do with the grandkids?

Thx! She does mani and pedi weekly so I don’t want to get it for her. She doesn’t want pandora but I considered David Yurman. The book sounds cool I think she’d like it.

I buy my grandpa his age in lotto tickets. Gives him something to do at random.
I buy scratchers and draw tickets.

Please whatever you get, please get something that can be used up - - I am 70 years old and do not have room for anymore gifts that I have to find a place for, or needs my attention, or needs for me to add to my list of things to do.
The twice a month prompt for stories sounds so cool, but honestly, after the first month or two I would start procrastinating and it would become a burden. That is probably not true for everybody, but it takes a special mindset to keep up with that. Plants mostly die unless they are taken care of by my husband. I got a cool moss ball pendant one time that died - it needed regular special attention cause it was a living plant. Experience gifts are something that can be cool, but - - well, I won't go on as it makes me sound so ungrateful.
One daughter spends time tracking down and getting me special candies that I LOVE but cannot find locally. Other gifts I have loved getting are more expensive versions of tools I use now. Younger daughter purchased for me a larger die cutter for my scrapbooking. (I also got the mini die cutter that is so convenient to use.)
Actually, something I would love to have is a couple hours of their time to organize my filing cabinet, or to vacuum my living room, or to take me shopping. I have mobility issues, but even when I didn't, it was great when someone offered to help me with these things.

We signed my mother in law up for "pickle of the month club" because she loved pickles so much. She really enjoyed it. Now I wish I knew someone who loved pickles enough to get this for them. II might add it to my Christmas list for next year. nlwilkins , I hear what you are saying. I bought my dad (92) a pulse oximeter for his birthday this year and he loved it. I was thrilled to find something practical that he would appreciate and would never have bought himself. Many years I tell him my plane ticket to visit him is his gift because I know he doesn't want things. paigepea , what about a relaxation themed gift for your mom? L'Occcitane has some lovely options.

Does she have a digital frame? My mom loves hers and it is so easy for family members with cute kids to send photos to it.

My MIL (75ish) loves when we spend time helping her with her phone or facebook or other tech stuff. We spent a whole day at their house so my DH could rewire their TV and redo their wifi so that they could use streaming services.

I'm not sure of the availability in Canada, but I got my mom Beekman 1802 goat milk skin care products for her 75th birthday, in March. She has never asked for a specific gift before, and actually gave me a list of additional products she wanted to try, for Mother's Day.

My mom is 79 today. Several years ago, she asked us to stop giving gifts to her because she doesn't want stuff. I cheat by sending her flowers on her birthday and then calling her. She loves that!

My mom is 86. For Mother's day I baked her 3 treats that she loves: toffee crackers, caramel corn and cranberry walnut fudge. She loved it and is rationing it out to make it last except the caramel corn. She ate that fast.
Perhaps you and your daughters can make her one or two treats that she loves.
