So we have had to enter appliance buying hell for the second summer in a row.
Last year our dishwasher died and it was a huge ordeal to say the least. Ordered from Lowes at the end of April and got "delayed" and outright lied to by store manager and corporate customer service. Finally got our dishwasher that we paid for in April in the middle of JULY. Won't buy from them again.
Now our double wall oven has gone out. Now we were looking to replace it anyway, had planned to redo the entire kitchen in the coming months instead of doing it piecemeal. But I am not about to start that process now, want to take my time and do it right, so replacing the oven is where I am at.
Now I have to decide on what I want. I am not one who needs high end, all the bells and whistles smart home appliances. I bake, occasionally broil for a few minutes. My washing machine is old school dials now, I hated the front load digital computer thing that didn't even last 10 years.
Can anyone talk to me about convection ovens? What does it do? What are the benefits? How often do you use it? Is it worth the extra $$?
I have Googled myself cross-eyed and "the best" lists usually concentrate on the higher end and customer reviews aren't always accurate, some people will complain about everything.
The oven we are replacing is original to the house, built in 1967. I know that I will not get another appliance to last that long. Talk about bang for your buck.
I know several Peas have recently redone kitchens and would love any input, advice or recommendations both positive and negative.

I have a convection double oven by Kitchenaid that was installed in 2013 when we remodeled our kitchen. While I love a convection oven, especially the Kitchenaid I had prior to this one, I hate this one with a passion. Why? It sounds like a damn jet taking off when it warms up, cooks and cools down. We have an open floor plan and it is really annoying. My advice is to find a showroom that has ovens hooked up so you can turn them on and hear what it sounds like.

the biggest problem may be the oven you can find will not fit into the slot that exists and if you are going to be remodeling within a year not worth it. and without picking something up off the floor.. you will be waiting months. I would be getting a countertop oven and just sell it when you do construction.
it still take months and it is not the store's fault. I waited 5 months for appliances for a new kitchen.

I have double Thermador electric wall ovens that came with the house. I believe they were installed when the house was updated and the kitchen expanded in 2001. The top one is convection, the bottom one isn’t. I don’t use the convection feature very often although I have started to in the past year. I don’t love them or hate them but I’m not a huge fan of electric ovens to begin with. I much prefer a gas oven especially for baking.
I need to figure out how to calibrate them because the top one in particular doesn’t hold a steady temperature.

I don’t have any advice, but my dream oven is either a French door oven or one where the door slides under the oven when its open. I’m short and live in fear or leaning over to pull something out of the oven and falling on the door. Well, I actually did that years ago when I was having huge vertigo issues. Luckily, I had a pot holder in my hand.

Please do not get a Samsung. Mine is a piece of poo-poo. Before it all went to crap, I ended up with a Samsung fridge last year. It is not good. So I called an appliance repair person. Do you know that many appliance people will not work on either Samsungs or LGs? I think if it's within the first three months it's okay, but otherwise, no one will. Find an appliance that people will repair.

I like to bake and used the convection function for practically everything. I used to joke our expensive oven made the worlds best tater tots. I would buy another.
I hate Lowe’s, we had a terrible experience with them about 13 years ago, I refuse to shop there unless it’s my only option.

I have KitchenAid 30" double convection wall ovens that are 12 years old and still working perfectly. I love them. The convection fans are a bit loud, but not terribly so in our kitchen/house floor plan. Highly recommend, great quality.

I have something similar. I LOVE having the microwave in the wall vs above the stove or taking up counter space. However I have never used it as an oven because I have been able to figure it out. But I need to sit down with the directions and really try. My oven fits a full size sheet pan which is wonderful for easy sheet pan meals. I can bake a whole side of salmon from Costco without cutting it up. I also bake treats a lot and usually the convection function but honestly I don't see much of a difference. |

I completely agree. Plus, the double oven is not the best use of space anyway. We are in the process of remodeling our kitchen now. I'm replacing my cooktop with a slide-in range and my double oven with a single oven under the counter. I will still have two huge ovens, but I am gaining a ton of counter space and some more upper cabinets. |

My house was built in the 60's. It was the builder's house. It came with a double oven. I replaced it in 2001 with a GE double oven. The top oven was convection, the bottom was a regular oven. The convection oven cooks things MUCH faster than a regular oven. It works with a roast or 1 big item, but if you're cooking a few things in there, it doesn't cook as evenly. I LOVED my convection oven. It always cooked evenly (for years) and was great!! I used to cook a turkey in one and a pan of lasagna in the other and they'd come out perfectly and timed just right. No problem!
I used the double ovens very often since I had a big family and we were often hosting family events. Cooking in both ovens was wonderful and made things so much easier.
I don't recall it being difficult to fit the ovens to the previous space at all. I gave them the specs on the old ovens and they ordered the ovens we wanted to fit that space.
As far as food not cooking evenly, that's what I have with our oven in our apartment (the stovetop too!). They're just cheaply made and it's difficult to make 1 meal that cooks evenly.

I recently tried to get a dishwasher repaired and was told they wouldn't even look at newer GE models. Can't warranty their work because it will break again so soon. |

My mom had to replace her wall oven about 2 years ago, she literally had one choice that would fit the space and even so she had to have the drawer taken out that was under it. If she wanted more options it would have required redoing her neighboring cupboards and counter top. Her house would have been built around the same time yours was.
I would figure out what size you need and what the options are first, you may have 10 million choices or you may have no choice at all without other modifications being made. Since you are planning a full remodel it might not be worth replacing right now if you have limited options.

Really Red Thanks for the heads up on the Samsung. I was actually considering that brand and was looking for some honest reviews. Definitely think it is worth a trip to an appliance repair store to ask for their insight as to what to avoid. I have a feeling I will be without a real oven for the summer, which DH always says that we shouldn't use the oven as much in the summer so it doesn't heat up the kitchen so much. I just have to try to plan meals that don't require a full size oven and stop buying stuff that needs a full size oven. Tonight we are having take and bake pizza that will be cut into shapes to fit the toaster oven and baked in shifts. There goes the meatloaf I was hankering for! BTW, my "save it just in case" gene from my mother is vindicated! DH has been asking why we were saving the toaster oven when we haven't used it. This. This is why. It wasn't taking space away from anything else and it saved us from having to buy one. |

We faced the similar issue from Lowes, ordered a double wall convection oven (GE profile) in December and it did not get delivered until mid-April...due to delay after delay. Very frustrating!!
I am not sure you can buy an oven that does not have the digital component. I did not know when we bought ours it would be digital and I kind of wish it was not.
I love the convection especially when heating up fried chicken strips.
What I REALLY love and did not have before is a built in temperature probe, so nice to use when cooking turkey/roast etc... I get a notification on my phone when it is done. I also love that I can preheat my oven when not home.
