Just watched a story on my local news about a study done on Sunscreens that may have a blood cancer (including Leukemia) causing ingredient. Benzene was found in 78 sunscreens at a higher value than is allowed by the FDA. www.valisure.com/wp-content/uploads/Valisure-Citizen-Petition-on-Benzene-in-Sunscreen-and-After-sun-Care-Products-v9.7.pdfAbove is the link for the petition that Valisure has sent to the FDA, regarding the sunscreens that contain the high levels of Benzene. There is a list (most of which are the spray on types of sunscreens) that are of concern. Hadn’t seen a post about it (I did a search but it never really works for me lol) so thought I’d share. I know we have a couple of the products in our stash that I’ll be seeing how I should dispose of them.

Oh dear! I was just diagnosed with myloproliferative neoplasm (a chronic blood disorder that can turn into leukemia). I may have to take an oral chemotherapy drug but am in a "watchful waiting" phase right now. Now off to check my sunscreen. Gracious!

And my sunscreen was one of the ones tested--Neutrogena Ultra Sheet dry-touch SPF 70. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) The list starts on page 12.

Mine isn't on the list, but that doesn't make me feel better. Does that mean it was tested and didn't have Benzene or does that mean it wasn't tested and it might?

We were looking for the Banana Boat Light is Air sunscreen and can't find it anywhere. I couldn't find it on the list, but maybe they just took it off the shelf as a precaution.

I've never used sunscreens because I've always feared something like this could come from them.
My heart goes out to everyone who may be affected.

I threw out my Neutrogena this weekend and then went to Walmart to get something else. They had shelves full of Neutrogena and Banana Boat! It was hard to find one to buy. My local news just listed the brand names, they didn’t say specifics ones, so I just assumed it was all.

I did not read all 9 (or so) pages of the attachment but while trying to save myself and my children from skin cancer I was unknowingly applying a cancer causing agent to our skin? WTF!!
Are there any safe sunscreens out there? My brain is hurting right now.

List of sunscreens tested is on pages 12-14!

Okay so we need to stick to the sunscreens listed in Table 4 on pg 14-15 to avoid skin cancer and not get a blood cancer. 🤦♀️
Why does it feel like everything is trying to kill us lately!??!?!

I read quite a bit of that and it seems that in random tests the products listed had too much. It also says in most cases it is probably a contamination not an ingredient.
I went through mine and got rid of any offending sunscreen and am also trying to buy the proper ones

I can only use mineral sunscreen and the one's meant for babies. The sprays and other kinds give me a horrible itchy rash. I don't see the one I'm currently using (they like to discontinue and/or change the recipe to keep me on my toes) but I do have other brands in the house for people that aren't me. I will be looking at that list more closely later. Thank you for the info.

I’ve been saying for years to my dh “when are we going to start hearing that sunscreen is giving people cancer”? It seems at some point, everything is cancer causing (sigh). Don’t get me wrong, I use it when I’m in the sun and my daily moisturizer has spf in it. A dear friend passed away of Melanoma, and I’m not ever wanting to get that, so we are diligent about using it. I just had a nagging feeling this would happen. Thankfully it’s not “most” sunscreens. There just happens to be a couple popular brands on the list and we have a bottle of one of them.

I saw the article yesterday and unfortunately have had a lot of education in this area lately.
I have used Hawaiian Tropic for years and just learned (after diagnosis) that it can cause breast tumors. Comes from the parabens they use.
A few things to help you, download the app "Think Dirty" which you can scan products and it will give a score, as well as explanations on the ingredients.
List of safe sunscreens provided to me by a great advocacy organization: All Good Aubrey Organics Babo Botanicals Badger Bare Republic - available at Target, Ulta California Baby Coola - available at Target Eleven by Venus Williams Goddess Garden Juice Beauty - available at Ulta Love Sun Body Mychelle - available at Ulta Nature's Gate Suntegrity
I've always tried to use minimal products and be conscious about ingredients, but because of the lack of regulation, there is a lot of misleading info out there. It's a shame. I'm also very fair skinned and sunscreen is super important for me, esp when vacationing in Aruba. I would be reapplying 50 lotion several times a day.
I've picked up the Bare Republic which Target does sometimes do promotions on, like buy one, get one 50% and things like that.

The best sunscreen is a nice tan acquired slowly over time. Some of us don't tan, we burn. Plus, a lucky few of us have to add in medications that make us photosensitive.

ALL of the links I found about this issue were just news reports from the Valisure testing and letter, NONE from any of the companies addressing this issue. I'd like to know more about it from other sources besides just that one testing lab.
I have to wonder exactly who pays for that Valisure testing to be done...
Pharma companies DO test samples of each and every batch they produce, and they DO have specifications for ingredients, contaminants, etc. It sounds just a BIT fishy to me. (as a somewhat cynical employee of an FDA-regulated business. Our QC lab has the exact same certifications that their lab does; why does their in-house testing result override any testing the mfg company routinely does? I'd like to know what a company does if Valisure ever rejects one of their products.)

Being a red head, I have always just tried to stay out of the sun. For me the best protection was wearing a shirt over my bathing suit and to not court a tan. Besides, the very few times I acquired a bit of tan, it was not really tan but more of a reddish color. I look for make up that protects, moisturizer that protects and wear hats and long sleeve shirts when I know I am going to need them.
When I lived on Guam, it was not unusual at all to see women using umbrellas to stay out of the sun and to keep their complexions light. Chemicals are not always the best solution.

I see people with umbrellas in the summertime around Phoenix, too. Sometimes they have BLACK umbrellas, which don't make sense to me, lol... (I'd think the black color would make it HOTTER underneath) but still, it helps to keep the sun off of your skin and face.

Well the only 2 we use were not on the list, Coppertone sport and Banana Boat sport. I also had a netrogena stick that was not on the list but since they seem to be the worst offender I tossed it. I need to check out the good brands. Our problem is DS20 is so allergic to sunscreens we have been very limited on what we use. He uses Coppertone baby until he was in his late teens.

I actively avoid the sun. When I was teaching, I used a golf umbrella during recess/bus duty. I used either an umbrella or a sun shelter when the kids were doing sports. I seek out shade (trees, tents, or picnic shelters) at outdoor events. I don't even swim in my own pool in the heat of the day--I use it in the evening or early morning instead, and walks are also done during those hours or inside on the treadmill. I rarely do yardwork because that is DH's domain, but when I do, it is early morning or evening. For the most part, I spend about 10-20 minutes total in sunlight each day (mostly from walking from building to building or parking lot on campus), and my vitamin D levels show it!
That said, there are times I HAVE to use sunscreen, such as at a football or baseball game or other outdoor event when I use sunscreen. I stocked up on some Neutragena 70 recently when Kroger had a sale and I had coupons. My daughters have always like that for their faces since it is a light sunscreen, but we will have to rethink that since it appears to be on the list. Otherwise, Coppertone or Banana Boat or Kroger brand are our go-to sunscreens, so I will have to scour the list to see what is good and what needs to go. If I still have the receipt for the Neutragena, it is going back!
