Let's say you are attending a program in an auditorium with 300 plus people in attendance. You know you are going to have to leave before the program is over. Would you sit in the very front and when it came time to exit, know that you are going to probably have 300 sets of eyes on you as you climb over people and walk out or would you sit in the back, near the door, where you could make a discreet exit.

I'd sit in the middle of a row in the middle of the theater so I could disturb as many people as I could. j/k - I'd go for an aisle seat closest to an exit.

Umm . . . that's really kind of obvious, in the back. I'm guessing someone you know (or saw) sat in the front and disturbed everyone while leaving.

No, actually, I was criticized for sitting in the back and not with my friends in the front. Just wondered if I was crazy of something.

I think it would depend on how formal the program was and if leaving meant crawling over a half dozen people and then marching down a center aisle. If it was something where I could sit on an outside end and walk down a side aisle I might have sat with my friends. Or something with children in the audience since one would assume there would be coming and going for parents to take kids out to the bathroom or whatever. If it was something formal where it would be a clear distraction, then I’d sit in back.

If I had to leave mid-way, I would sit in the back, preferably in an aisle seat.
For programs (choir, orchestra, play, etc...), specifically at the School, I arrive usually an hour+ early specifically to acquire an aisle seat in one of the first few rows. The one thing I will NOT do, is move in towards to the center, to allow a last minute running in late arrival to have my coveted front row seat(especially if I was able to get an aisle seat. It pisses me off when whomever the powers that be (play director, band leader, Principal, etc...) starts saying "if everyone come please move over to fill in the center seats, to make more room for those just arriving". Oh hell no! I will gladly stand up, and allow someone to pass by so they can sit in the random center row seat. No way am I giving up my prime seating, especially if I stood in line an hour or more to acquire it.

In the back is the polite thing to do. I do not get the counter-argument (and as a frequent presenter, if someone in the front gets up and walks out, I wonder if I bored them or did something).

I would sit in the very back corner near the exit. I hate when people interrupt a performance or lecture to get up and walk in front of a bunch of people.

No, actually, I was criticized for sitting in the back and not with my friends in the front. Just wondered if I was crazy of something. You are respectful of your fellow patrons and the performers, and as someone who has to "manage" the house for theatrical productions, I appreciate you!

We aim for aisles because my DH is 6’5” so it’s often a matter of physical comfort for for him.
