For DH’s 50th birthday we are spending a couple days this weekend with friends doing some of the bourbon trail. Do any of the peas have suggestions for us (places to eat, hits, misses, etc.)?
Thank you!

My favorite Louisville eatery is no longer there: Lynn’s Paradise Cafe. 🥲
There are so many local restaurants to choose from, but it’s been at least 3 years since I visited my sister there, so I don’t have any advice other than do not waste any time at a chain restaurant. The locals have you covered!

We have enjoyed doing the Bourbon Trail through the years. The Louisville Slugger Museum and Tour was fun. Our favorite tours were Buffalo Trace, Four Roses and Wild Turkey. We took the full tour of a couple of distilleries and after that my DH said, we know how Bourbon is made, then we started just going to the tasting rooms. The drives through Kentucky countryside are breathtaking. We also did some city tours too.

Our favorite is always Maker’s Mark, but honestly we’ve never been on a bad tour. They’re all interesting in their own way. My second fave would be Buffalo Trace. A nice, kind of fancy, restaurant located downtown is Swizzle. www.swizzle25.com/

We went a number of years ago. We loved the VIP tour at Buffalo Trace and were lucky enough to get Freddie Johnson as our tour guide. He is third generation there and makes the tour a colorful story telling experience. We also toured Woodford Reserve and found it to deal more with the science of bourbon distilling.
Our favorite experience was going to the Pappy drawing at a bar called Capital Cellars in Frankfort. They have an extensive bourbon selection and great food.
If you’re looking to buy bourbon, hit the Liquor Barn. They’ll have bourbons you won’t be able to get back home (pretty much no matter where back home is).

I'm barging in because, I think we might go thru/stay in Louisville on our way south. Are there tour companies to take you to some of these distilleries? We would love to go to Maker's Mark.

If you want to buy bourbon while you are there, check out the Costco liquor store. They have excellent prices on a wide variety of bourbon, and I don’t think you need to be a member to shop.
They frequently have Buffalo Trace, which is nearly impossible to find around here.
If you do the Buffalo Trace tour, try the bourbon cream with root beer if you can. That’s my kind of root beer float and my favorite summertime drink!

Definitely go to Talbot’s Tavern in Bardstown. Such a cool place with rich history. Our favorite distillery was Limestone Branch! The tour guide is incredible. They are part of the Beam family!

Bernheim forest has the “little giants” exhibit. Jim Beam is very close to this one - has a small bbq joint on site
Makers Mark is beautiful. Grounds are expansive and when I was there they had a chihuly exhibit Wild turkey is awesome. The tasting room hangs over the river and has amazing views. Woodford reserve- typical tour, beautiful gift shop and one of our favorite bourbons,
Restaurants downtown. Mussel and burger , Doc crows, REPEAL, get drinks at Proof on Main and walk through the 21c hotel and art installations.
There are small distilleries downtown. This is Convenient because the big ones that actually do distilling and bottling are a ways out downton: Angels envy, peerless, michters. Rabbit hole is modern and has a great bar with views.
other options: Muhammed Ali museum, Churchill Downs Museum, Lousiville Slugger Walk the BIG 4 pedestrian bridge to Indiana.

Do you know I live in Lexington and we've never done the Bourbon Trail. I want to! We just haven't made time for it. I really want to see the Chihuly exhibit at Maker's Mark. DH wants to see Woodford Reserve as its his favorite bourbon.
I'd recommend Proof on Main in the 23C Hotel, just cuz the hotel is so cool to see the inside of. 4th Street in Louisville is fun, too. Lots of places to eat.
