of the longest lockdown in North America. And I couldn't be more thrilled!
I know this is old news for people in the US and UK. But Ontario just entered stage 1 of reopening today (3 days early!) after achieving 60% vaccination (first dose). Limited capacity patio dining is opening today, along with 15% capacity retail, and I believe camping is now allowed. Again, no big deal for others I'm sure, but the thought of being able to eat out for the first time in >8 months - I don't know whether to cry or dance a jig!
Holy crap this had been a long 18 months. And after a couple months of reading about my American friends getting their lives back, it's so nice to finally sense that it's our turn. I have dinner reservations for Sunday night to celebrate. Hopefully by August I will be able to enter NB and see my family for the first time since December 2019.
Anyways, that's it. I'm just celebrating and wanted to share my happy!

isn't it wonderful! We here in California have been far more conservative about opening up completely. Next Tuesday we will FINALLY be able to go mask free and I can't wait! We'll be able to go to concerts again and I'm looking forward to all of it. I'm really proud of my state our percentages for vaccinations are among the best in the country. Makes me feel all that more safe from this.
I've been a dutiful mask wearer and rule follower, but I'm ready to rip that mask off. I'll probably still wear it in big crowds but other than that, I'm elated this is almost over.

I am celebrating right along with you - it's been far far too long!! I was out yesterday at the grocery store and it seemed like everyone was just a little giddy, kind of like the last day of school when we were kids, lol.

Good for you! Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba you've had it really rough. We've only had shorter and not as harsh (still could shop for essential services, no curfew was given, could leave your health zone) wave squashers in Alberta. And twice it didn't effect me in a low numbers zone....but there is also nothing to do in a rural zone. We just started stage 2 but have already hit the mark for stage 3, wide open.

My cousin who lives in Ontario tried to tell me yesterday that you were at 60% FULLY vaccinated. I told her not according the the Canadian government...I told her that was the % of one shot. Didn't somethings open though before and then you had another lockdown recently?? I know she told me she had an "illegal" pedicure the other day. She's a piece of work. She got her first shot in March and won't get the 2nd till Sunday.

We're at 73% of adults vaccinated with one shot/12% with both shots here in Ontario, and I think the 12-17 year olds have a similar rate with the first dose but are behind on the second. They're saying we should have 80% with both shots by the end of July. It's been tough watching others in the US and UK gain their freedoms so much sooner; for example, we'll still be wearing masks here for months. But then I stop and think about what a first-world problem that is, since so much of the world won't be vaccinated for years, if at all. This pandemic has really highlighted geographic inequalities.

I'm very thankful for you!
In the UK we're just watching the beginnings of a possible third wave that could scupper the reopening date of June 21st. That's only 10 days away but the infection rate of the Delta strain is suddenly increasing exponentially again.

I'm in Ontario and we could shop for essentials, never had a curfew and could leave our region. It was suggested that we don't leave our regions but that wasn't always followed and never enforced.

Parts of Ontario were open briefly for part of Feb/March but Toronto has been in lockdown since..... before Black Friday but I don’t remember the date. We just came through a third wave which was really brutal.

That's only 10 days away but the infection rate of the Delta strain is suddenly increasing exponentially again. The delta variant is about 25% of cases right now and is anticipated to become the dominant strain within a month. It’s a big concern because we have high first dose rates, but very low second dose rates. We’re watching the UK very closely and second doses will be prioritized to hot spot zones.

You know, for however exciting it is, I can't think of a single thing I actually want to do! I shouldn't say that- I want to go buy a bra. I don't have a single proper one left and I need a new size also. It's going on 5 months now. I can't order on-line because the stores were only allowing returns once they re-open and who knows when that would be and they are like $80 a pop- I really didn't want to be sitting on $800 of merchandise because I can't go into a fitting room. Bras never fit me properly- it's a tedious chore to find one, I always have to try 15 on to find one I like! I am so going bra shopping tomorrow

There are still so many that are unvaccinated. It's inevitable, there is no doubt it will. And you're right it is the unvaccinated that it is hitting the most. The Delta ( Indian) variant has a far higher transmission rate than the "UK Kent" variant and is the dominant strain in the UK now. Although thankfully, it hasn't hit the hospital admissions and deaths any higher so far as it's mainly hitting the younger age groups, late teens to mid/late 20's. But, and it's a big but, this age group while not at such a greater risk as older people, are infecting the unvaccinated in the older age groups. These are the majority of people that are in hospital - the unvaccinated. The hospital numbers are pretty low at the moment but if some people, especially in the older age group, 50+ still insist on not taking up the vaccine then it's inevitable that it will rise. There is no excuse to be unvaccinated in the UK as the planned vaccination has gone like clockwork. We're now at the 25-29 year old, having already gone through the older age groups. Therefore anyone over the age of 30 should have had at least the first dose and most over the age of 40+ have been called for their second dose or at least due in the next few weeks. The over 50's and beyond have all been called for their second dose. The uptake is still pretty high compared to a lot of countries but it still needs the rest of them to be vaccinated Unfortunately, the unvaccinated are contributing to the decisions that will be taken on June 21st as to whether we will finally put aside the last leg of our restrictions - the end of the ban on large gatherings such as the numbers for weddings, funerals ,indoor concerts. sport stadiums, theatres etc, and the end of the required social distancing. There are unconfirmed report in the media that it will be delayed by anything from two to four weeks so that more of the 20's age group can be vaccinated with at least their first dose. OP I'm pleased for you that your restrictions are coming to an end. Enjoy your long awaited meal out.

I feel your relief. We are only slightly ahead of you in Belgium. Terraced restaurants were allowed to open about 4 weeks ago and outdoor gatherings were increased to 10 people. I had friends over for the first time since January of 2020–two vaccinated friends to study for our French exam. It was so freeing to be able to sit out in the garden and just relax.

I thought the article below was quite interesting about variants, their ability to mutate and how it might play out longer term and what the potential is for this virus. BBC
