When my current 12x12 (traditional) book is full, I am switching to a smaller book, which will be soon. Either 6x8 or 8.5x11 size. Not a pocket page book, still traditional layout style.
I am very excited to go to a smaller size book, but not sure which one I want to go to. I currently use 6x8 for my Project Life and love it. So leaning that way, but am wondering if that will be too small.
I already use 3x4 size photos, so no need to switch photo sizes.
Post your suggestions/comments that I maybe haven't thought of yet. Your regrets from when you switched and wish you hadn't.
Thanks
P.S. I use 3-ring albums, not post bound if that matters.

I've been dreading when I run out of space on my 12 by 12 shelf and have to make a decision... Thanks to 2020 only needing one album and not two I have put the decision off for another year I am leaning towards 8.5 by 11 only because even if they stop making all sizes of scrapbook albums, at least I can use a 3-ring-binder from Office Depot, and sheet protectors... who knows if other sizes will stick around. I REALLY wish 10 by 10 was a thing, I would stock up on enough albums for the rest of my life!

I prefer 8.5x11. Sheet protectors are cheaper. You don't have to buy albums, you can use office binders. I like the bigger size too.

I use 9x12 and love the size. I only ever did one 12x12 album for my niece's first year. My Mum used to scrap 12x12 and there's only one place in the house I can store the albums and it's a PITA.

Funny thing, I have so many 12x12 albums I am having a custom wood shelfing unit made to hold them all because shelfing units are not big enough to hold them correctly. Especially 3-ring albums. (I don't want a Kallax unit in my living room)
LOL!!
Good thing my brother is a builder and knows other builders/carpenters. Or I would be paying a fortune. I will have to stain it myself, but that is a small price to pay.

So I think if you are currently doing 6x8 for PL and you love it, you should be ok with 8 1/2 x11 for your traditional layouts. I think 6x8 would be too small for all traditional layouts. Eventually you would want more room
Just looking at Scrapbook.com, they have more choices of albums fpr 8 1/2 x11 than they do 9x12. Those might get more popular and they may put out more colors, but the album is still 12+ inches tall. So you would only be losing a few inches from the length.
The 8 1/2 x 11 page protectors are cheaper, but you would not have divided pocket options if that matters to you.

Not sure if there are bigger items of ephemera that you might want to include that would be too big for a 6x8" album? Brochures or certificates perhaps. 6x8" is a nice small size, easy to handle, as you would already know from your PL. I found 8.5x11 to be quite big and heavy in comparison but it's easy because you can buy cs already the size you need, no trimming, no waste, and it's quite a bit more space than 6x8, which may be better or worse.

I been scrapbooking 8.5 x 11 since 1996. 3 ring binder and sheet protectors. I use the binders that have a front cover insert, and make my own cover(scrapbook layout).
You should use whatever size makes you happy.
I am curious why you are wanting to change? Is it less of page to fill up with photos/embellishments? Takes up less room on storage shelf? Just want to do something different? Other?

I've switched to 8 1\2 x 11 as well and I'm really happy with the decision!

I think 6x8 would be a fun size! But, the practical side of me says to go with either 8.5x11 or 9x12 for the album size - you can always add some 6x8 layouts in the album to switch things up!

I REALLY wish 10 by 10 was a thing, I would stock up on enough albums for the rest of my life! FWIW, Becky Higgins sells 10x10 albums and page protectors in support of her My Modern Story documenting pivot. Three colors: grey, navy, and black. She could pivot again tomorrow and those could go away, but if you truly want to stock up for life, it's an option.

I will have to consider it... and figure out how many albums I need for the next 40-50 years 😳. The last time I looked into it she only offered black albums and I wasn’t sure where to get page protectors. It seems things have changed recently.

I have been using 8.5x11 for years. I will not switch because I want to always have some kind of 3 ring binder/album and page protectors available. It is a standard office size so if I need to I can hit up an office supply store someday.
I love the 8.5x11 size. I usually get at least 2 prints on a 4x6 so I can scrap as many photos on that size as I could on a 12x12.

And yes 17 scrapbooks is alot to find storage for. Plus the 5 12x12 Project Life books I did before I switch them to 6x8. I still love the 12x12 books I did in the past and I look through them often, but I'm ready for a change. It's funny, I'm still leaning toward 6x8. I might try a layout for both sizes and see how it goes.

I'm quite new to scrapbooking. I've done WITL, DITL, DD in 6x8 and enjoyed it. But now I am scrapping some free form pages and I am finding the 6x8 a bit too small. By the time I've created a page with photos, I have no real room for journaling. So I think an upcoming trip I'm going to do 8.5 x 11 pages, because I have plenty of binders around. I am finding I like to work outside pocket pages and use a bit of mixed media.

I switched to 8x8 postbound years ago, and was able to redo my 12x12 and 8.5x11 layouts pretty easily. I’m pretty set for albums, and have been picking up WRMK inserts from eBay and Mercari. After a long break, I was a little surprised to see 8x8 gone. But I can see why - 6x8 pages are so easy with 4x6 and 3x4 photos.
I’m considering 9x12 for some vacation albums, but the height is still challenging for storage and I don’t see postbound options, just ring.

I have always scrapped 8.5x11 (since’96) other then the occasional one off 12x12 Disney album, I have a really hard time with the squares, rectangles are much easier for me to do layouts on. When SC came out with 9x12 and now scrapbook.com I switched to that and love it so much. Less trimming of paper, so much more real estate for photos but still rectangular. I will continue with that size until it goes away, then go back to 8.5x11. I do Christmas albums in 6x8, but otherwise that is just too small for me.

One thing I didn't mention. I do not journal and I rarely add a title on my pages. Just photos and pretty papers. A few embellishments here and there, but that is all. Like I said, my scrapbooking style has changed over the years. I may add a caption or a small note so I remember in a few year who someone is if there is an extra person in the photo, but I do not add lots of words. So I don't need space for that.
I'm going through pictures today, and I think I lost an album from 2018. How do you lose a 12x12 album. Isn't that the problem, they are so big, they get in the way? lol
