campfire when I come back in my house!
just venting.
Backyard fires are allowed here with a fire permit.
I hate campfires. I like our natural gas fire bowl, but I’m not a fan of the wooed/smoke/smell of campfires.
But my next door neighbour, and her brother on the other side of her, love them. Like every evening, love them.
when it is nice outside? I’d love to open my windows and fill my house with fresh air. But in a Saturday they often have one going during the day. I don’t want my whole house smelling like smoke.
We worked hard to get our backyard looking lovely and peaceful and private.
Now we need a bubble over it to block out smoke and screaming children. 😂
DH and the kids don’t care, it is just me who hates it. (As I sit here smelling like smoke because I was outside weeding and watering plants)

That would drive me insane.
No air pollution laws?

I'm glad the neighbor girls grew up. Listening to them scream while they were in the pool was obnoxious.
We have a gas fire pit, but I also love a good backyard fire. We just use our air conditioner on those nights.
Every night might be annoying

That would drive me insane. No air pollution laws? If you have a fire permit there is no rule on how often. And no air pollution bylaw.

Right there with you. People around here love their fires. And not being able to open the windows without a house full of smoke makes me crazy. Our yards are just not big enough for this crap. We also have a natural gas fire table, not bothering anyone.

I don’t mind a bonfire once in a while but every night would get really old. Especially if they’re burning stuff all day long. Ugh.

They should be required to consider those with breathing issues if nothing else.

I hate backyard fires as well. I hate the smell. We were on our 5km walk route tonight and i swear everyone had a fire going. GAG.
I also hate when my neighbours smoke pot. It always blows into my condo when they are smoking up on a balcony or in thd courtyard. It reeks and i hate the smell.

Yep..our neighbors have taken to smoking pot...outside. I’d prefer they smoke indoors and stink up their own house.

and yet another reason I'm glad to live in a rural area. We have neighbours but they're far enough away that stuff like that doesn't bother me
But I wish my neighbours could all coordinate to mow their lawns at the same time LOL Then I wouldn't have to listen to never ending mowers

Cigarettes and pot bug me more. Maybe putting a fan outside with would help?

I'm afraid DH and I both like the waft of a little wood smoke. What I loathe is sitting outside and being subjected to cigarette smoke.

I think that not liking bonfires is more of a girl thing.
The longer my hair, the less I like them. My hair absorbs the smell. Even after a shampoo it is not all gone.

Yep..our neighbors have taken to smoking pot...outside. I’d prefer they smoke indoors and stink up their own house. Ha ha that’s a household thing here. DH, middle DD and her boyfriend all smoke. It is fully legal here, and so long as they do it in the garage or outside I don’t care. But it’s done in 5 minutes and the smell goes away. The fire is ongoing for hours ugh.

Cigarettes and pot bug me more. Maybe putting a fan outside with would help? I don’t think it would - we are in a fairly open area. And it isn’t always next door, sometimes it’s the guy out behind us on the other side of a green space.

Ugh. Every night is exhausting. While I like the smell of a bonfire, I hate how I smell after one and there is no way to avoid that, unless the wind is blowing the opposite direction.
I am sorry you have to go through this. It stinks (hah - sorry, I couldn't resist!).

i love the smell of a campfire. i have a teeny tiny firepit for my itsy bitsy backyard. they are not allowed in toronto but basically, as long as your neighbour doesn't complain, you are good.
my one neighbour has spent the last 6 months completely renoing his house with no permits... not worried about him. my other neighbour said she was jealous and went out and bought one too, so she isn't a problem.
but weed?? ugh. that is so gross, and i used to smoke it regularly. my ex-H used to wake up at 4:30 or 5:30 am on the weekend, pull it the weed and roll a joint in bed beside me, go out on the back deck off our room and then walk back in reeking of pot.
sorry OP, not much you can do i guess. my neighbour has yappy dogs. i can't step foot in my lovely little yard without those fools losing their shit.

I am right there with you. When my neighbors use their fire pit, I have to close up the entire house. The smoke comes right in. Last time they were burning their old mulch and it was extra special.

It could be worse!
My neighbor put in a giant hog manure storage tank, right across the road from my house. It summer breeze blows right across it and into my place. I would say at least 300 days of the year smell like hog manure here. Some days are much worse than others. If the manure is being agitated, before pumping it out, it really smells like death and shit.
Nice beautiful summer night? The smell of hog shit just hovers over everything.
I never ever have my windows open in my house.

Our next door neighbor loves to smoke his cigars. He has a whole patio set up outside including a TV and will invite friend over to smoke too. It has only gotten worse since his wife moved out right before the pandemic. We had a whole house fan installed last Summer and had to turn it off and turn on the AC so many evenings because it was just sucking in cigar smoke.
One of his college daughters is back and he has cut down a lot. Hoping she stays most of the summer!

I see pools with giant covers. Can you investigate putting one over your yard?
