My 18 year old son is considering being a Door Dash driver this summer to pick up some spending money.
What does he need to know about this job? Anything dangerous about it?

Check to make sure that additional car insurance is required, as he will be using the vehicle as 'business' and not pleasure.
If he doesn't have this insurance, if there is an accident, he may be liable-personally for any claims.

I was thinking about these Door Dash drivers the other day. DO they have to pay for their own gas?

I was thinking about these Door Dash drivers the other day. DO they have to pay for their own gas? Yes, they pay for everything. They are independent contractors, not employees. Having to do independent contractor taxes, pay self-employment taxes, etc are downsides. The upside is complete control over schedule - working as many hours as they want or don’t. But there’s no guarantee how busy it will be.

My daughter door dashed during the pandemic. I was worried about her safety, but at that time, all drop off was contactless so that made me feel better. Most places she wasn't even allowed to ring the doorbell, left food at door and then returned to the car to let them know it had been delivered. It's great for learning about problem solving - as there will be snafus. Apartments suck - avoid zones with tons of apartments. Why complexes do such a crappy job of a coherent system of numbering apartments and providing a map and well lit - building numbers - I have no idea - but she HATES apartments and spent way to many hours wandering around an apartment complex trying to find C building and wondering why it's not between B and D. The pay varies tremendously. She started figuring out times and areas where she could pretty reliably make $20 an hour.
DO NOT TAKE A WALMART ORDER!!! Under no circumstances - refuse - refuse - refuse. Eventually Doordash will have to actually pay their workers for Walmart. She was screwed on first order - like $5 fee - but newbies assume someone would actually tip her for carrying 15 bags of groceries up 3 flights of stairs - they didn't. Next time Walmart took FOEVER and she waited 45 minutes for the stupid $7 order. If you look on Reddit you'll see walmart+doordash is a SCAM.

Please contact your co before he makes a commitment to doing this especially if that car is titled to you and he’s on your policy.

During the pandemic it was steady business. But now as things have opened up and the weather is nicer the amount of orders for any kind of decent tip was way down.

My dd did SHIPT over the winter/pandemic. She did really good. She paid off a brand new iphone in 2 months. Right now she's taking a break from it, since things are opening up and it's summer, it's slower, but she'll probably do it again next winter.
