I have the worst toenails. I have tried many different treatments to clear up the nail fungus, but nothing has worked. I saw they had fake nails for toenails and thought that may work. Any experience doing this? Any tips and tricks I should know? Will it make my toes even worse? How can I wear cute sandals with ugly toes? Thank you for any and all advice, even if it is keep my toes hidden from the world.

If you have fungus on your toenails that will not go away, I can't imagine it is a good move to cover that with a fake toenail. That just seems like it's a breeding ground for more fungus.

I wouldn't use fake nails with fungus, it's going to encourage more growth.

Same as others. I would not cover up a problem. Have you seen a doctor?

Nope. I would not go near them with any sort of fungus.

I had a bout of toenail fungus and nothing, nothing cured it (and I tried everything) until I got a script from the podiatrist.
They make you come in and take a couple of tests to make sure your kidney isn't affected but my podiatrist assured me that it's very rare, and only people in poor health are the ones that may experience a problem.
I remember I got my pills and Penlac (brush on nail polish fungus killer) right at the beginning of quarrantine last year. I was faithful and took the pill twice a day and painted that Penlanc on my nail bed every night for 3 months I think it was. I can't remember how long it took, maybe by fall for my bad nails to grow out completely normal again. (I had two, my large toe and the smallest toe)
The other good thing is the prescriptions are now availabe generic so the cost is way way lower than it used to be.
To answer your question, before I got the medicine, I would just keep them trimmed and would get regular pedicures. My manicurist had no problem with is, she sterilized everything anyway. She'd use the drill that you use for acrylic nails to smooth out the thicker nails. Ugh, it was so gross, I'm so so happy I no longer have this issue.

I was thinking it would not be a good idea. I did ask my Dr. at one time and was told it would not be covered by insurance because it is considered more cosmetic and there is less than a 50% chance of it working.
I will talk to my Dr. again.
I will just focus on trying to make them look as nice as possible.
Thank you for confirming what I kind of already knew.

IDK how your insurance works but ask for a referal to the podiatrist. They'll be far more receptive and helpful. It was super cheap for the prescription, because they prescribed the generic. Also, I don't think that 50% is correct. I know for me it cleared it up perfectly. Good luck, honestly its so worth it to pursue the meds. Its life changing!

Tea tree oil - brush it on your toenails every time you think of it. Like leave it out on the counter in the bathroom and every time you are in there brush it on your toe nails. It kills bacteria and fungus. Of course when you can get in to see the doctor, find out if there is anything he can do. But, until then try the tea tree oil. At night I would put on cotton socks to spare my sheets but end up pulling them off in the bed when trying to sleep. By then the oil had soaked into the nails so it was OK for the sheets.

Did you try a prescription from your doctor? I tried everything including the Vicks vapo rub, but I really just needed a course of generic Lamisil from my dermatologist. It took time for it to work and grow out, but it did.
I think it's ok to cover it up with nail polish. I did that and didn't have any problems. I am a recent Olive & June convert and am doing my own pedis at home now. I'm getting better at it and it's fun. Maybe doing something similar might help you to feel better about your toes and that way you can avoid a nail salon (I'm convinced that the last time I got fungus, it was from the nail salon).

I think it was the generic for Lamisil. and again, I restate nothing I tried worked. My family doc told me to use Vicks Vapor Rub and I did that faithfully for almost a year and nothing. My manicurist told me to dunk my toe in vingear. I tried tea tree oil. Nothing works. This is a medical condition that needs medical treatment. The fungs is deep into the nail below and it needs those pills. The Penlac acted like a clear nail polish barrier to kill any fungus on top and to prevent new fungus from getting in (I'm guessing here) but those pills that worked from the inside are what kills it.

I didn't get the penlac but that sounds interesting. I've done Lamisil generic twice over the years. The last time (about three years ago) I didn't think it was working. I didn't really see any growout until very near the end of the course of treatment or right after it. I just had to be patient, which was so hard. It was summer and I wanted it gone!

Jili gosh, I sure hope it never comes back again, such a bummer. The Penlac thing kind of sucks because you can't use nailpoish and you are stuck having to look at your ugly, unpolished toenails. Luckily for me it was during quarrantine so I wasn't going out much anyway. But I hear ya on the patient thing, I was constantly checking for the regrowth!

I agree with everyone that you should get medical help for the fungus first, but for future knowledge...I had a fake toenail. When I did chemo, I was so worried about losing my nails as the chemo kills fast growing cells- cancer, hair and nails. I made it all through chemo without losing any and I was so happy but after I was finished I did lose a few fingernails. I had enough left that my manicurist could put fake nails on them. Then I got a pedicure and one of my toenails broke and fell off right in the middle of the pedicure. I was so devastated but they put a fake nail on my toe and it looked so good. I had no idea they could even do that and it made me so happy I almost cried. Everyone there was so sweet about it. So yes, they do fake toenails and they can look awesome. It really helped me feel better about myself at a time when I wasn't feeling very good about anything.

I’m currently on Lamasil right now for the same. I’m convinced I got it from a nail salon too. OP, I had to have a liver function lab, something about lamasil *can* mess with your liver. And have one this week - a six week follow up to check the lamasil is not doing damage. My podiatrist told me it would take a while to see an difference, so I’m not expecting to see a difference yet, although it does look better to me even after 6 weeks. He said when the fungus is under the nail bed, those topical things won’t work and it needs to be treated medically. The 3 month RX was $8.75. Beware, the lamasil tablets are not coated, so they’re kind of a bitch to swallow, IMO. 🥴

I have it for the first time ever on my big toe and I am 100% positive that I got it from the local nail place. I've been using vicks and some brush on. It SEEMS to be growing out, but I also and getting a Dr appointment

smalltowngirlie Did they take a sample and culture and test it yet? I thought I had fungus for years and none of the over the counter stuff helped. Went to a dermatologist and they took a sample and cultured it for a month. It wasn't fungus at all it is just keratin build up. There's no real fix other than staying on top of nail trimmings and cleaning the debris out from under the nail. When I notice it starting to build up again I get pedicures 2 times a month or more till its under control. I also have a tool I use right after I get out of the shower when the skin/build up is soft from the water, that scrapes it from under the nail.

He said the same about there only being a 50% chance or so of medication working. He said the brush-on stuff was more like a 10% chance. He sent me to have blood work done but didn't like what he saw there, so he wouldn't put me on the oral medication. He said he would send me back in six months for a new round of bloodwork but then Covid hit and I haven't been back to see him.

I was put in the prescription two years ago, unfortunately it caused side effects and I could only take it two months. It did clear up a couple of the nails, but I still have three affected. I cover them with gel polish that you use as light for, it’s not perfect but it’s better than looking at yucky nails. I have not found any difference in health of the nails with or without the polish, if anything, they feel much better when they are covered with a nice protective layer of hard gel.
