Yes another “where should we go in August?” My kid has a short window when he is free and I want to go with him somewhere new to him
Details: - would just be me and my 20yo college student and maybe my 19yo college student - he is very into history and we are all into food and exploring - we all don’t like heat and humidity - only 3 -4 nights so fairly easy to get to from Bay Area (direct flight ideal) but a flight and a drive would be fine - not on the west coast
Right now thinking about: NYC, (realize it could be hot but he’s never been), New Orleans (ridiculously hot?) and as I’m writing this I’m thinking DC? Love your thoughts on these and others

I was going to say DC for history, exploring and food. But…it will be very hot and humid in August.

New Orleans will be flaming hot. I'd strike that from my list.
I would choose DC or maybe even Savannah (though both could be hot). Or what about Gatlinburg?

One more suggestion is to look into flight schedules and consider how that will impact a 3-4 night vacation.
We are taking a short, 5 day trip this summer. Our first choice was NYC but leaving from Seattle, we would have spent 2 of our vacation days just traveling so we opted for Southern California instead.

If you like lobster...

If you can do Canada (have passports), you could check out Quebec!

Good input on those cities being too hot. I was thinking of Canada but didn’t know if border was open. I was also thinking of Alaska (we went to anchorage and the Kenai peninsula a few years ago and loved it) Maine is great idea.

I am in New England and I think Maine is a wonderful idea. However depending on where and when it may be difficult to find some place and/or not at an ungodly rate. A lot of people from my area go and can’t even get spots at long time frequented places.
So if that doesn’t work out, I would suggest Vermont…Southern, central, or Northern. Not a terrible drive from Boston if you can find rentals, but try flying into BTV for central or northern. Stowe, Jaypeak, Killington? I will also put in a plug for some place like North Conway, NH. A car and driving would be part of these places though.
I bet if you could fly into Portland Maine you could Uber around, although I am betting things are really busy. Good luck.

Not hot and humid in August and not on the west coast limits things. I've done Savannah, Charleston, Hilton Head in August and was very uncomfortable for anything other than hanging by water. For 3-4 nights I'd probably not go that far anyhow as you lose a day on each end just traveling. Revisiting in April it was an entirely different experience.
What about Montana? It'll be warm, but not humid. Or Colorado? Do you two enjoy doing outdoorsy things?

Thank you!

I’ve already been to Idaho this year and we are potentially doing Yellowstone in early July. And we are in lake Tahoe right now (all short vacations) oh and I have Yosemite camping reserved for September so already lots of outdoor stuff - urban seems more fun to me.
He’s never even been to the east coast so flying into Boston snd renting car seems ideal. I did east coast road trip a couple years ago but that was with my younger two for a college tour.
I realize everything might be too booked up so I will start researching tonight.

While DC would be ideal, it is so freakin' hot and sticky here in August that you will melt.

Boston, Maine, or New York would be my picks from the options you’re tossing around. Washington and New York will both be really hot but maybe worth it. I would strike New Orleans and anything in the south (Charleston and Savannah are great options, but not in August!).

August out east anyplace with real historical interest will be hot and humid, no way around it, but you'll have AC to retreat into so I wouldn't let that limit me.

We've done a couple DC trips recently since my daughter lives in that area. We went in July and it was hot, but we were out and about every day. If you flew into Ronald Reagan there is a Metro stop right off the baggage claim. The DC Metro is incredibly easy to use and you could avoid renting a car. I don't really know how museums are handling their reopenings, but it would be pretty easy to find out. I am a pretty firm believer that everyone should visit DC if they can.

I agree with all of this. DC is just a special, unique place with history every place you look and a great food scene. But...I will take my hot August Texas days over the heat and humidity in DC in August. I really miss living there all except for that part!

Boston would be my choice over NYC in August. Especially as using the subway sucks in the summer.

I'll add Rhode Island into your choices if flying into Boston. Especially the Newport Mansions.
