I’m glad Schumer is forcing everyone’s hands on this. Put up or shut up. When you cannot even vote yes to open debate, then you need to be on record so the public knows where you stand.
But I don’t know what Cox Richardson meant by this. May have been an error (?): "Still, Republican senators can deploy the filibuster, which permits just 41 of the 50 Republican senators to stop the act from passing. It is possible for the Democrats to break a filibuster, but only if they are all willing."
How is it “possible for Democrats to break a filibuster” when even if the entire caucus is 100% united they only have 50 votes? Breaking a filibuster even on a procedural matter requires a cloture vote of three-fifths to begin debate. So I don’t understand what she meant.
"If so, and if he gets frustrated with Republican refusal to compromise at all while the Democrats immediately accepted his watering down of their bill, it is possible he and Senator Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), who has also signaled support for the filibuster in its current form, will be willing to consider altering it." Hmm, for Manchin, yes, he’s always said he supports reforming the filibuster. But Sinema? She’s always said she does NOT want to change filibuster rules at all. So for her, I’ll believe it when I see it. Does anyone know if she's revised her view?
