My background paper of choice is subtle. Either white cardstock, another neutral cardstock, or a B side type of patterned paper. Every once in a while I’ll choose something a little more bold.

I try really hard to use a light grey/tan background (especially wood grain), or a muted colored pattern, but the first two are pretty rare in collections these days. When I can’t find one I like, or do mixed media, I go for a white Foundations Paper background. I recently saw that Simple Stories has a small wood grain paper collection as part of their Color Vibe series. I believe it’s called Woods.

I tend to gravitate towards white cardstock but I will go with patterned paper if it's subtle. If I use a bold or colorful patterned paper I will cover it with a cut down piece of white or black cardstock and just have a colorful frame. I sometimes worry I'm stuck in a rut but then I don't do much to get out of it!

Thanks, artbabe, for the recent threads! I always start with a cardstock base, usually in a neutral color (eg white, black, charcoal, grey, navy, dark brown, light kraft, vanilla). I occasionally add a patterned paper background, using the cardstock base as a frame for the layout, & rarely cover the cardstock base completely with patterned paper(s); these are opportunities to use inexpensive, thin, or less desirable colors of cardstock.

I never know what to do about paper like My Minds Eye and others of that ilk. The artwork is so nice you can't just cover it up.

I use it all - just depends on what kind of mood I'm in. I would say the majority of the time I'm using a pattern paper but I don't rule out using white or colored cardstock either!

I choose the theme paper I have for the photos. I rarely use cardstock and if I do it has to have pp someplace.
If I have several papers to choose from in a theme I put the photos on them and pick one.
