I want this board to go a little faster so I keep thinking of topics to discuss.
What do you use for your background paper? When I first started scrapping I used colored cardstock. I sometimes used patterned paper. A couple of years later kraft colored paper was all the rage and I made a bunch of pages with that. Then white cardstock became a hot trend. I think that one is still around. I'm guessing 50% of my pages are white cardstock.
Lately I've been switching all around. I do use white a lot but I like black quite a bit, too. I use colored cardstock sometimes if I have the right match for the patterned paper I'm using. I also use patterned paper if it is tone-on-tone or a b-side type of pattern.
What is your favorite type of background paper?

What is your favorite type of background paper? I love a white cardstock background! Of course half the time I cover it all up with inks and sprays! I use a lot of subtle or tone-on-tone patterns for backgrounds, too. Shimelle just did a class using half & half backgrounds (two 6x12 patterns side by side) which I really enjoyed and will try to incorporate more when putting together layouts.

I use cardstock most of the time but occasionally will grab a PP. I'm a good mix of coloured, white, and black - I occasionally grab kraft but it's not a go-to for me.
It took me a long time to warm up to white backgrounds - I think because when I first started scrapping they were associated with CM-style which was definitely something one was supposed to avoid.

I’m pretty much a white background person at the moment, but it does end up being covered up quite a bit with patterned papers. In the past I used a ton of solid colored papers. I’m very rarely a patterned paper background person. Maybe because I feel it’s too busy for me? Not sure.

It honestly depends on the layout and photo. And what direction I want my layout to go.
I use white when I want to other papers or accents to really pop off the page or have a simple crisp, clean look. I also use white when I want to use my Dylusions spray inks.

If I could pick only one background paper, it would be patterned paper. Tone-on-tone to be precise. I will use cardstock as a base and let just a bit show around the edge. When I do that, I still consider the patterned paper to be my background.

I use it all. I’ve been on a patterned paper trend lately but I like to mix it up.

I would say 90% of the time I use patterned papers. The other time I usually use white cardstock, occasionally black or another color. I used to be down to only buying 1 sheet of each patterned paper, but now that I use it as background paper as well, I'm back to buying 2 of specific one's that I think can be used for that.

I like cardstock (no preference on color) or a pattern paper that is small in scale. That's typically the B sides of pattern paper.

I tend to go for white still or patterned paper.

I try really hard to use a light grey/tan background (especially wood grain), or a muted colored pattern, but the first two are pretty rare in collections these days. When I can’t find one I like, or do mixed media, I go for a white Foundations Paper background.

I primarily use white, but really like using very small patterns as well. My problem is I haven’t been restocking the small pattern papers like I used to when I could shop in person. Often times it’s the B side that works for me and I can’t always see what it is online.

A couple of years ago I made a whole album using white cardstock backgrounds. But ever since then I've been using PP backgrounds for nearly everything. The colors make me happy

I generally use cardstock in a color coordinating with/complementing my photos (any color except white). If not a solid color, it's usually a tone on tone, textured, distressed, texture-looking (like a wood-grain paper), or a very small "B-side" print. Once in a while I'll use a paper with a large pattern on it, but not an all-over pattern, just something on one or more borders, or a design in one or two corners, etc. Just depends on the photos and theme of the page.

I go in phases between colored cardstock & patterned paper, but I rarely use white as a background. It also can depend on what I'm scrapping--with sports I tend to use a patterned paper, mostly because I have a lot of it for baseball & football.

I think I mix it up. - White, but with added interest like side rips/patterned paper peek thru's, or mixed media. Or half white, half pp. - Vicky Boutin mixed media backgrounds are probably my favourite since it's the white background I love without any work to add the interest! - But I also like black and kraft still. - Recently I used PINK cardstock for a background! But I added stencilling and tears on the edges. - I do equal amounts of pp backgrounds too. I just purchased this paper pack: watercolor wishes by kirstendrew, on Flickr Because - hello! Background heaven!

Patterned paper here, with co-ordinated cardstock to matt my pics.
I've really got to stop myself and tell myself to use cardstock as a background.

I definitely go in cycles on my background paper. When I started I used mostly coloured cardstock, then I moved to patterned paper backgrounds, then jumped on the white cardstock bandwagon, and now I've started using more patterned paper backgrounds again.
I definitely prefer white cardstock, I feel like it really lets the photos shine, and even just a little bit of patterned paper then makes a big impact. However my desire to reduce my stash means I either need to stop buying (ha!) or start using more, which has led me to more patterned backgrounds. Like others I find the more muted b sides work best for my style, I especially love a soft watercolour wash.

I prefer patterned papers or colors for the backgrounds of my layouts. My choice of background papers depends on what photos I want to scrap.

I usually use colored cardstock- hardly ever white. My current fave is probably navy. I do patterned paper backgrounds also; then I usually mat my photos with solid cardstock.

Same as you. Early pages were colored cardstock with a bit of patterned paper or stamping. Then I discovered Glitter Girl (Shimelle), and she taught me how to not be afraid of my patterned paper (I loved patterned paper, it is my scrappy obsession, but I wasn't so sure how to use it)
I did get on a kick for a while of following the cutting guides from You Tuber Simple Cut Creations, and that had me using lots of colored cardstock, which brought me back to my beggining years-and I do really like those completed pages ( and man am I productive when I scrap this way!!)

I gravitate towards a sheet of cardstock, then covering most of it up with pattern papers.
But sometimes the color or pattern of a pp sheet is perfect, and I build on that.

I’m pretty evenly split between white card stock and patterned paper. I very rarely use colored card stock for backgrounds.

I mostly use patterned paper. I like to use a subtle B-side with busier papers added on the side or bottom. kitbop I need that watercolor paper!

Patterned paper (often B-side styles or watercolor/sky type designs) and some white too. Joann's Designer Destinations papers are another go-to because I can go pick them out the same day if I don't have anything at home that is speaking to me.
