My friend's husband is sliding into dementia. They live in a rural area (in Alabama, near Montgomery). One day he wandered around in the woods for awhile, scaring her etc. She would like some sort of tracking device to help locate him in case he wanders off again. She found a few online, but none have good reviews (that she found).
Does anyone have first hand knowledge of what might help? She thought that a cell phone would be her answer, but he had it turned off the day he went missing for an hour or so.

How about a watch with a tracker. Does he wear shoes with ties, I think they have a track to go on shoelaces.
Find something that works even if turned off.
Oh, wait... How about those Tile things that go on luggage/briefcases/keys.

If he got the Covid vaccine, he surely has a Bill Gates tracker inserted....

I think the best bet would be a cell phone with a passcode needed to shut it off.
A tile will give you general location GPS enabled watch

If she has an iPhone, Apple has their new AirTags out now, $29. You can check them out on YouTube. People have put them on things, people and dogs.

How do the air tags attach to a phone? You pair it to your phone through bluetooth. It then uses the bluetooth network of other iphones and macs, just like the "Find My" app.

We had the Life360 app on my Mom's phone when she was still driving. She has life alert and I believe the company has a gps enabled wristband/bracelet.

I think she should consider something more low tech. Put alarms on ALL the doors of the house. If he turned off his phone is he going to consent to hanging a GPS tracking device around his neck or one his wrist? Garmin makes GPS trackers for dogs but, they aren't small. There's also a subscription cost.
If he's out of cell phone coverage or he's turned it off. It's no use. Also, air tags use other phones. Is someone else going to be in the woods? Bluetooth has a very limited range.
I would never depend on cell phone coverage for a health and safety situation.

We got my ILs Tiles for their stuff. Helped them find my FILs keys he left at the airport half a continent away! I haven't personally used them so not sure how easy they are but my MIL finds it easy enough to do so with out our help.

I wouldn't depend on him always carrying his phone. I also could not get Mother to wear a fall alert bracelet even before her dementia worsened. Her wandering was dangerous because she kept crossing the road. We did put better alarms on the doors but she still got pretty far before we could catch up to her. The last time was nearly dark, she was in her nightgown and no shoes. One time she tried to flag down a car and tell them there was a stranger in her house. Wandering can get very dangerous. Your friend needs to start thinking about what they are going to do if the behavior continues and worsens. At some point, she may have to call in the sheriff if she can't find him and I would think that may be the time that tough decisions have to be made.
In this situation, I'd look for a small tracking device that could be put on his shoes or something. I don't know of anything. I just know you can't count on them to carry something or to have the presence of mind to push a button like on a Life Alert type system. It's the beginning of a rough road, unfortunately.

A tile? My husband has them on his wallet, keys, our dogs, and our tortoise. His phone has an app. He’s used it for the tortoise and his wallet. I don’t know the range, though.

Along with a tracker - I’d also consider getting him road ids or runners ids that can be attached to his shoes.
It’s helpful if he wanders and someone finds him. I’ve heard first responders check shoes for personal info.
An I’d bracelet would work if he would wear it.

Tiles are great but they only have a range of about 300 feet on the tile pro. You can also summon help from tile users that are close to the item, I've never done that. I love my tile but I'm not sure it would work well on a person.
Do you have onstar? I don't but i saw a commercial lately that was a daughter looking for her father and using some onstar type of technology.
Also, look into the air tags but he would have to have it on his body for it to work. Plus, you would have to check your phone model some of the older or less fancy phones don't have the specific location step by step directions as the iphone 11 and 12 etc. this is what I have read about air tags - I do not have any yet!

I don’t think any tracking device is completely foolproof. Even when my mom was in a memory care nursing home she cut off the wrist trackers twice! They had to put it on her ankle so she would forget she had it on. If a person is starting to wander, it really is time for the caregiver to start thinking about getting help with some kind of full time care. It’s all really hard. I’m sorry your friend is going through that.

I’m wondering if the air tag could clip to his shoe or something. I just sent the link to my friend whose mom also is dealing with dementia. She lives with them but they both work FT and have a shore place they go to on the weekend. Mom prefers to stay home. They have cameras throughout the house and she is notified when the front door is opened.
they have an aide come but it’s only a few hours each day. I live across the street so I told her to text me anytime she wants me to check on her, make sure she eats etc.

I dont think a tracking device is foolproof enough. If he is prone to wandering, it may be time to consider another living arrangement for him.

My mom would throw her belongings in the trash. Wedding rings, phone, her clothes. I know she would have thrown a tracker away. Maybe figure a way to lock the door in a manner he can’t unlock quickly? Obviously that wouldn’t be ideal for a medical emergency situation though. It’s a difficult situation and I sure hope you can find a solution that works.
