I’m a teacher, so during the summer I do a great job of working out each day. My oldest has to be a football workouts at 6:45 each morning, so I get up and get my workout clothes on and go walk or workout right after I drop him off.
I need tips for once the school year starts! I know I need to do it before work. If I wait, it just won’t happen with cooking, cleaning, tiredness from the school day, and helping kids with homework.
It’s too dark to walk in the mornings, but I have a garage set up with a treadmill, spin bike and elliptical. I really have no excuse except that I already get up at 5:30, and hate the idea of getting up any earlier!
Anyone have any tips on how you are successful at working out before work each morning?

I do, but I work nights, so whether it's light or not isn't an issue. I get up at 3-3:30 and work 7-7. I don't sleep a lot on my work days but I catch up when I'm off.

This is a tough one. I'm with you on not wanting to be up any earlier than 5:30. It sounds like you are enjoying your workouts right now. Does the high from exercise last for awhile? If so, can you use that feeling to talk yourself into getting up earlier?

I have to be to work between 8 & 8:30 so I get up at 6:00 and do 15 minutes elliptical and 15 minutes yoga. Just enough to get me going for the day. I also take 2 20 minute breaks at work and walk outside.
It was the worst when I first started the earlier wake up time. But now I miss it and my day just isn't right if I don't do the 30 minutes of working out.

I'm not a huge fan of before work workouts, but there are days I have to do them. I just tell myself the alarm has already woken me, get out and do it. Honestly, the gym is near my school, so if I am using the weights, I just go after school. IF I am doing fitness classes there are a couple in the evening and I really do enjoy them. It helps that I have an almost 17 year old who can snack or do whatever he needs to and a DH that doesn't get off until 7 if he works.

Sometimes, just getting into the work out clothes is a hurdle. It may sound silly but I find that if I sleep in my work out clothes, it will increase the likelihood I will work out in the morning. It just takes care of one of the steps/decisions/excuses to not do it. If I start doing something else or get dressed into regular clothes, the work out will not happen lol.

I am also a teacher. I do a morning class at our gym M, W, F at 5:00 a.m. I get up around 4:20 a.m. I love the class so it gives me the motivation to go. I may try and go on Tues also and do my own workout. On Thursdays, I work out with my trainer after work. I love getting my workout done in the morning. I am not a morning person so it took some adjusting, but I have so much more energy in the morning. I was doing the Tue/Thur 6:00 p.m. class before switching to mornings. I really lacked energy. Making the moves to the morning was a win!

I exercise in the morning 2-3 days per week. I work from home though and just need to be online by like 9am so I usually do a run outside from 7:30-8:30am

For the 25 years I worked, I got up at 5:30 and walked 2 miles before work. Our neighborhood is safe so I didn't worry about the dark.

For the 25 years I worked, I got up at 5:30 and walked 2 miles before work. Our neighborhood is safe so I didn't worry about the dark. Our neighborhood is pretty safe but several of the sidewalks are uneven. Let’s just say I’ve tripped and fallen twice, so I don’t walk after dark anymore. Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I’m going to push myself this year to get up a little earlier and exercise before school. I started out last school year riding the spin bike before school, but once kids came back in person and I was doing hybrid the wheels fell off! I’m starting a new position in the fall and will be out of the classroom (title 1 intervention specialist), so maybe I will have a little less stress since I won’t have grading and lesson planning. I will be adding a little longer of a commute, but I don’t think it will be too bad.

I can’t do it. I have to be to work at 7:20 (earlier if I need to set up equipment or make copies) and I just can’t get up any earlier. I’m already up at 5 to walk the dogs (not really exercise for me). I’m so-so about going in the evening. I think I’m going to try packing my gym clothes and going right after school this coming year.

A close family friend (DD's Godfather + he was engaged to my sis for years). He goes to the gym at 4:30 am, then works (painter, etc...) a VERY physical job. When he gets home, he works on his new house. He's starting to do initial work to put in a pool. I don't know how he does it! He's 58 years old!
ETA: When I worked at Jenny Craig, I'd work out at night when I got home, or if I had a couple of hours off in my day. Crazy!! I was in tip-top shape though! (I had my gym in my basement--all I needed was a treadmill, weights, benchpress and other equipment and then I'd do 1/2 hour of stretching and resistance and spot training.)

I do! I get up at 5, 5:15 every day. I leave for work at 7. But I take extra time to myself after the workout. Noone is up yet. Everything is so quiet. I love the time to myself. It defiantly sets up my day on a positive note! And it’s hard at first but gets easier and I’m doing a fun Beachbody workout so I look forward to getting up.

When I was teaching I'd get up about 3:30 a.m., go to the club at 4:30 a.m., come home about 6:00 a.m. and be in the car to school by 6:30 a.m. It worked for me. My school was only 2 miles from me. So it wasn't bad.
When I had to get my daughter to day care/pre-school my workout was after school. I would remove all my makeup and change what I could on my last break at school. Then I'd go to the club, workout, then home to make dinner. Our daughter remained at after school care because I got out of school after she did so we had to pay for it anyway.

I get up at 5 and while I'm not a fan, even after doing it for years, I do know this is what works for me. I get my clothes ready the night before and set my 'Rock Clock' alarm. Think The Rock singing at you to get your candy a$$ out of bed! Makes me giggle every morning.

I think I might need a Rock Clock, can you hook me up with a link? Or is it called the Rock Clock?

Something that helps me and DH do things like this is to think of them as a mandatory task or appointment, rather than something you want or hope to do. Not tell ourselves “I’m going to do my best to do this.” Because that leaves room for reasons/excuses not to do it when they come up, instead of finding a work around. And until the habit is fully formed, not even allowing yourself to do it the next day when we don’t feel like it. (when it’s not a daily task) Sabrina, I’d start doing it at that time several weeks before you have to head back so that your body is accustomed to it by the time you add back the physical and mental exhaustion of teaching and your children’s fall sports. Also, is it possible to streamline your mornings any more to give yourself more time? Maybe something you do in the mornings that you could do the night before? What about tools to help like an automatic coffeemaker, or assigning a task you do to your children?

I do, but I work from home 😝
I’m usually up by 7:00 and I used to come down in my jammies and have my coffee. Now I get into my workout wear first then have coffee. That way I don’t talk myself our of the workout. I do half an hour or so, shower and head to my cake studio for the day.

When I work in the office I get up at 4:30 and go to a class at the gym at 5:15. I just have to make myself go. What helps me is to have my workout clothes, including socks and headband, laid out the night before. And just make myself go and remind myself how much better I feel after working out.

It just takes care of one of the steps/decisions/excuses to not do it. If I start doing something else or get dressed into regular clothes, the work out will not happen lol. I tried that last week. I just don't think I can again. And I am not sure exactly why. It was comfy enough but I just felt odd. I was sleeping in my athletic bra 'cause these girls can't go free, even for morning walks. I have a bad shoulder issue so I have to do a zip front and that might have been part of it. I have reached that lovely age where I am waking up around 6am on my own. I hate it. I have been forcing myself to go back to sleep for an hour. Last week I decided I should just go with the flow and get up. So while I am not doing this every morning, on those mornings, I wake up at that time, I go. My youngest pup loves exploring the early sounds of the neighborhood. As a high energy dog, we do a good, brisk walk.

For me, success happens when I get myself set up the night before. I put my workout clothes, water, and EarPods on my nightstand. Then I put more water, my towel and socks at my bike.
As soon as I get up I do a 5 min meditation and then put my workout clothes on and drink my water. Putting workout clothes on while under my warm covers makes it way less dreadful. Then I put on fun music and make my bed. Something about making my bed gives me an energy boost. Then I pop my contacts in, throw my hair up, and go get on my bike. I do not think about it. I just do it. Taking away as much morning effort as possible and just doing the darn thing works best for me.
