Illegal, but they do it anyway. “Let Americans celebrate and have some fun!” Ugh

Both.
"The Mat-Su Borough, fireworks are illegal all year except in limited areas on New Year’s Eve, if the risk of fire is low."

We have two types of fireworks: legal and illegal. Legal ones are termed 'safe and sane' and are sold as fundraisers for many types of clubs. Then there are the illegal kind which include bottle rockets, firecrackers, and m80s. Over the years the illegal ones are getting out of control.

I didn't answer the poll because I don't know specifically what "personal" means, and I know there are different types of fireworks. Some of them are clearly legal because they sell them everywhere. And of course I hear them all over the neighborhood. ugh. By “personal” I meant the ones you can buy at a firework stand, the “safe and sane” ones where you don’t need a special permit to use them. I just wanted to make sure respondents didn’t think I also meant the ones that pros use.

So I live in California and our county was absolutely ravaged by wildfires last year - we were one of those cities where the smoke was so thick, we woke up one morning to pitch black sky that stayed that way all day. It is even drier this year; we are a tinderbox of brown grass. Safe and sane fireworks are still LEGAL. I wish I had a picture of the fireworks stand near my house- it's literally surrounded by fields of dry grass. Our city is encouraging us to report illegal fireworks but the problem is since SOME fireworks are legal, its hard for people to know the difference and nobody reports.

Illegal where I live. I'm in the Texas Hill Country right now. I believe there is a burn ban in effect, so at the moment they are illegal.

Legal here in New Zealand although there are now stricter rules about which types can be sold compared to when I was growing up and they are only able to be sold for the 4 days leading up to Guy Fawkes, which is November 2nd to 5th each year. Despite that, people buy and hoard of course. I would like private sales/use to be banned because every year there are incidents involving pets and kids.

Illegal in Maryland except for party poppers, snap pops, snakes and ground based sparkler devices. In some counties you can have sparklers and in some you can't. There are lots of sponsored public displays of fireworks in almost every single town so it's not like we miss out. I much prefer this anyway-it's much safer and the shows they put on are so much nicer than anything a regular person could put on in their backyard.

It is illegal in my city to buy, sell, possess, or shoot fireworks of any kind. Subject to a $2000 per person, per offense fine.

Here if it leaves the ground it’s illegal. Not that that stops anybody particularly.
I don’t enjoy personal fireworks, so we just go to a show and then go to bed.

It's illegal here; although you wouldn't think so with the amount being set off nightly...

All *personal* fireworks have been banned in Seattle for many years - other than the annual city sponsored show which was cancelled last year as well as this year. However there is no statewide ban, so some areas in WA state allow them, while others ban them. There are Native American communities north, south, east, and west of the city, so any and all are easy to buy.
There is zero enforcement in the city, and in fact the last few years the city has specifically asked residents not to report fireworks being shot off unless there is a fire.

Surprised to find out personal fireworks are illegal. I mean, I thought everything was legal in Florida! There's an exception for sparklers and caps, but judging from last year a LOT of people break the fireworks mandate!

They are illegal but that stops no one. People beg others on the neighborhood apps to refrain from the daily noises as it scares pets, children, and wakes those who are trying to sleep for work. Again, it stops no one.

Illegal in city limits, legal outside of it. Legal in city limits across the River. Available for sale everywhere. Usually. This year both counties banned them entirely (except two public displays) because it’s so dry. If the pandemic is anything to go by, people will just say screw it and do whatever they want.

Buying fireworks has been illegal here since the late 70s or early 80s. I remember as a little kid in the 70s, you could go to the local milk bar (general store) and buy penny bangers and things like that. Then I guess a few too many people blew their fingers off, and they were banned. They were not banned in one territory, so a lot of people from my state would drive up there to buy them.

The “safe and sane” fireworks are legal in my city. However the guy down the street that obviously has a tiny dick, keeps setting off bombs that shake my entire house. And the useless police, who on their Facebook page ask you to report these assholes, do nothing. This is exactly like my town. The police FB page keeps posting that and people just laugh at the posts. Out house shook so bad the other day from one behind our house, the ceiling fans were shaking.

In South Africa fireworks are usually allowed for NYE, Guy Fawkes and Diwali (Hindu festival of lights). Calls to ban them have been growing in recent years.

Banned, for the first time ever, this year. Our hillside usually sounds like WWIII. We'll see how the ban goes.
ETA: I will say that in previous years, the days and nights leading up to the 4th have been non-stop explosions. I heard one a few minutes ago, but no others this evening.

It’s a city by city decision and unfortunately I border a town that allows and sells them. For the most part people don’t use them in my city, but it only takes 1 idiot.
The cul de sac next to me had a home that burned to the ground due to fireworks (when they were legal). They disposed of them in the trash cans beside their house and and the fire caught under the eaves.

I live in an area where they are illegal this year (due to the 115 degree heat) and at 8:24 am they are already going off.
