Two-thirds of Americans also believe democracy is "under threat" but likely for very different reasons.
"For Democrats, Jan. 6 undoubtedly looms large," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, referring to the violence and insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, "while, for Republicans, it's more likely about [former President Donald] Trump and his claims of a rigged election."www.npr.org/2021/07/02/1012302107/poll-more-americans-are-concerned-about-voting-access-than-fraud-preventionJust thought this was striking and proves that if you repeat a lie enough times, people will believe it. Really wish Republicans would show some courage, honesty and integrity and just tell the truth. With this DHS warning about violent extremists, its pretty obvious to me where the real threat to our democracy is coming from. news.trust.org/item/20210630153442-069e4/

Trumpublicans are not going to listen to anything other than the big lie.

I wish I could find a link, but NPR had a clip recently where someone talked about even if Trump conceded the election today, its too late. Even Trump can't convince them the election was fair. I thought this article explained the divide on what's threatening our democracy really well. www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/2-out-of-3-americans-believe-u-s-democracy-is-under-threatFor Republicans, 83 percent of whom responded that democracy is under threat, Brown said these fears may be an extension of the economic and racial anxieties that have driven much of the conversation on the right in the last several elections, as well as a reflection of the widespread belief among members of the party in the aftermath of the 2020 election that results were illegitimate. “You have a base in the Republican party that’s been riled up around all of these cultural issues, and then you put on top of that these lies and conspiracies that only stoke a paranoia that the country is being lost,” Brown said. She added that the right’s response to the “big lie” — that the election was stolen from Trump, spurring the Jan. 6 attack at the Capitol — by seeking to restrict voter access is likely also what’s driving Democrats’ beliefs that democracy is under threat as well. “Democrats are very concerned about the Republicans’ perceived desire to attempt to win by any means, whether… legitimate or not,” Brown said.

I’m an independent. I can’t believe what has become of the Republicans OR the Democrats. I was a Republican when I was younger because the Democratic Party was the party of George Wallace and Lester Maddox and I was shocked at their racism. These days, I’m shocked at the lunacy and ignorance of the Republican Party, and alarmed at the way the Democratic Party is spending money we don’t have and vilify our country. Living overseas allowed me to see America, warts and all, from the outside and to make friends with people from countries with differing forms of government. Our system is a good one, but we have a lot to fix, the first of which is the polarization and venom that plagues our politics.

"For different reasons" is more like "different views of what democracy means".
Progressives view democracy as freedom to live as one chooses as long as it does not harm others (who don't live inside you).
Regressives view democracy as freedom to shove their bible and god culture on the rest of the nation.

If the worst thing the Democrats are doing is spending a lot of money, I’m OK with that. I am not OK with what the Republicans are doing - lying, undermining elections and our democracy, passing voter suppression bills, passing bills to limit women’s reproductive freedoms, passing bills to restrict how history is taught in schools etc. eta - I would argue that the Covid relief bills passed during President Biden’s administration was money well spent. I know some of it still hasn’t been spent, but the money given to taxpayers, funding for states, cities and towns, schools, vaccinations, child care etc was all a good investment. It prevented the economy from sinking into a depression, helped the economy to recover and helped individual families. It wasn’t a perfect plan, but none of them are. Strictly in terms of money, it was a good investment. And the infrastructure bills that President Biden has proposed are also good investments. He does have plans to pay for them - taxes on households earning over $ 400,000 and increasing the corporate tax rate. It’s the Republicans who object are are trying to fund it by charging fees to all Americans at every income level. The covid relief bills bills and infrastructure plans are all better investments that the trillion dollar tax cuts under Trump that mostly benefitted wealthy CEOs.

If the worst thing the Democrats are doing is spending a lot of money Funny how Dems are vilified for "spending money" to help the middle and low-income folks while the GOP is ignored when they "spend money" on the billionaire class hoping and praying that "trickle down" will FINALLY work.

If the worst thing the Democrats are doing is spending a lot of money, I’m OK with that. One thing I realized about 10 years ago. At least with the Democrats I can point to which programs the money went to. Even if I do not benefit directly from that program I can *see* where it went. I have a harder time figuring out what I’m getting for GOP debt. Large corporations might be building their wealth, but you & I are not deriving any benefit from that. ( unless you consider your servitude to the plutocracy a benefit )
