I was taught very seriously by my mother and also by my sewing teacher that one NEVER, NEVER uses the cloth scissors to cut paper. The scissors used for cutting fabric were never to be used for anything but fabric or thread.
I thought DH knew this, but today he proved me wrong. He insists that he never heard such a ridiculous idea.
So, a poll...

I have scissors from both of my grandmas, so they would be in the neighborhood of 100 years old now, and they cut through fabric like butter because they were only used for fabric. I have my own pair given to me by one grandma for HS graduation, and they are like new. My girls knew to NEVER EVER EVER use my scissors. It helped that I always had a sewing room, and there wasn't much reason for them to go in there anyway!

Life would be very uncomfortable for anyone who uses my fabric scissors on paper!

My cheap fabric scissors have FOR FABRIC ONLY written on them in sharpie. My Gingher scissors are in a drawer that only I know about. I have a pair of my grandmothers that still work incredibly well. Someone suggested putting a lock through the 2 handles so they can only be opened if you take off the lock. I would use it as a very good reason to buy a new pair!

Dh and Ds know I will cut off one of their fingers with the ruined fabric scissors if they dare touch them.
When Ds was little he was at a friend's house and the boy went looking for scissors. When he came back with a pair Ds asked him if he was positive they weren't fabric scissors as it is a punishable crime! The mother called me and thanked me for raising my kid right.

Never never use fabric scissors on anything other then fabric! Over the years I have been known to hide mine! My DS knew from an early age!! My DS was told multiple times - my Gingher scissors were NEVER to be used on paper. He was taught that paper scissors are for paper; fabric scissors for fabric. Did he listen to me? Nope. After the second time of finding my fabric scissors in his room, I made him pay for their sharpening out of his allowance and then I started locking both my scissors and my good tweezers in an old tool box in my room. I had a whole drawer of craft scissors, but for some reason, he wanted the fabric pair. He just didn't think that it mattered. And my poor tweezers! I had a good expensive pair to be used for facial hair or slivers only. He ruined more than one pair by using them to pry things open, got glue on them, etc. I'm sure now that he has some expensive tools for making fishing flies that he would understand it, but as a child, he was one stubborn kid.

No one touches the fabric scissors. My fabric scissors have a label on them saying similar. 😁 I live alone, but my office/crafting is also my guest bedroom - I take no chances that someone will pick them up and use them. And I don’t even work with fabric that often.

I don't sew, but I have heard that before. I do have a pair of scissors in my scrappy stash that is just for cutting ribbon. People at scrapbooking retreats probably roll their eyes at me if they ask to borrow a pair of scissors because I ask what they are cutting...after all I have regular big scissors, regular small scissors, non-stick scissors and my ribbon-cutting scissors...

I don't use my fabric scissors for anything else but fabric and heaven help anyone that does.
Cutting paper will dull the blades. There's also more of a slanting edge on my fabric scissors that makes them sharper. Similar to a sewing needle. If I sew on my scrapbooking pages that needle is them useless for any sewing, it's blunt, so I keep a needle for scrapbooking separate to my sewing needles.

It's a long standing rule - many generations long - that one doesn't use the good fabric shears on anything but fabric. DD learned this rule after I caught her giving the cat a haircut with my 8" Gingher shears! Fortunately for the cat I caught her early in the process and he was no worse for the wear! However, just to play devil's advocate and share new thoughts on the subject, it will not ruin a pair of shears to cut paper with them on occasion. It's not the act of cutting the paper that dulls the blade, but the fibers and minerals in the paper that do the damage. Keep in mind that certain fabrics (denim, nylon, polyester) will dull your blades just as quickly. Make it a habit to wipe down the blades of your shears after using them, no matter what you've been cutting. Knowing all of that, I think librarylady should go easy on her DH...this one time! Cutting Paper with Fabric Scissors: What 5 Pros Think

I take my scissor use seriously. I have a carousel of all kinds of scissors. Each has its purpose and I don't really cross use them. Especially the fabric ones. More important, DH is never to touch, use, borrow, or even linger in the general vicinity of my scissors. Lol

My mom sews and yes. We knew as kids that the white handled scissors in the sewing box didn't leave it or where to be used for anything. "Don't use my good sewing scissors..." I remember both grandma's having sewing scissors in i their sewing area and everyday scissors in the kitchen.

I'm not much of a sewer, but I did go to art school and took a couple of fibers courses. My instructor was adamant that fabric and paper scissors should not be interchanged. Paper dulls scissor blades more quickly, and you don't want dull scissors on fabric.

My grandma sewed and she had certain scissors. My mom had no interest in sewing and didn't care about scissors. She couldn't understand why the household scissors wouldn't cut old shirts down for rags. Let's just say that the sewing machine was used by my dad more than my mom.
I have two pairs of fabric scissors, one of which no one but me is allowed to use. There are two household scissors for everyone plus two or three utility scissors. But those silver heavy scissors? Touch them and die.

Yes, I do. And for ribbon as well. And several paper only scissors. And for cutting through hard things like plastic or wire. And DH knows he will die if he uses them for anything other than their intended purpose. Growing up, I didn’t understand why my mom would freak out if we used her pinking shears or fabric scissors. I mean she lost the plot. She was also pretty territorial about her left-handed scissors. Mom, I get now. But I still think you should have stocked more than 1 pair of scissors for the rest of us to use because no one ever knew where they were, so we were forced to take drastic measures.

My oldest used my fabric scissors to wrap gifts one year. I said seriously?!? Why would you use the fabric scissors? She didn’t know there was a difference. I think she learned that day when I nearly freaked out. Now I have fabric scissors stored with my fabric and paper scissors stored with paper crafts. I also have one pair of everything scissors on my desk or table to help open boxes and containers and twist tie security wrap things. All the stuff that I don’t want my good scissors to get ruined by. I always have one pair of those everything scissors—and I replace them when they get dull or sticky or broken.

I have fabric scissors and ribbon scissors. I bet if you asked my husband he would say we don’t have any fabric scissors- he knows they are a thing because of his mother. I just keep them hidden away and he has never seen mine.

OMG yes. We were taught from an early age that using Mom’s sewing scissors on anything but fabric had the penalty of death attached to it!
I have several (okay probably DOZENS) of pairs of scissors in my studio. The ones over by my sewing area are never moved out of that space and are *only* used for fabric and ribbon. One of them has my business name engraved on the blades, so I know that is the “good one” LOL. I tend to use a rotary cutter for a lot of my sewing projects though, and they also are only used on fabric.
