Inspired by Laura W’s stamp reference pages, I’m slowly doing something similar. I won’t be cutting apart my stamps, just making reference pages with like stamps to easily compare my options.
The first one I did, and I’ve meant to do this forever, is stamp every journaling grid/block stamp. I love these little grid boxes, but sifting through bins trying to find a certain size was frustrating. Game changer! I’ve used this reference page dozens of times in the past week.
Anyway- my next reference will be for alphas & numbers.
My question- what letters would be most useful to stamp for reference? Laura stamped “font” as her sample and I don’t care for that at all.
I think a word with a tail (ypgjq) or often used vowels - (aei) - Any ideas?
In thinking and planning for this I realized I have way more lowercase alphas and only a couple with uppers, and they’re both really small in size. Useful to know!

I’m about to start stamping my alpha inventory, this is a great question. I assumed I would just do ABC but including something with a tail would be useful. Most of my stamps are all uppercase though. Please keep us posted on what you decide to do.

Who's Laura W? and what's her reference pages? This sounds like just what I need!

I looked up words that use all of the vowels to see if there were some good ones that also use a few ascenders and descenders, but they're not the most fun words... but maybe one will catch your eye!
equation, education, tambourine, communicate, ambidextrous, automobile, groundbreaking, evaluation, evacuation, commutative, euphoria, pneumonia, encouraging, cauliflower, intellectualization, revolutionary, saliferous, audiophile, adulteration, menstruation, sequestration, abstemious, gregarious, tenacious, facetious, equivocating, equivocation, pandemonium, rejuvenation, neutralization, Aeonium, praseodymium, authoritative, ostentatious, precaution, devaluation, coeducation, permutation, pertinacious, autosuggestion, hallucinogens, repudiation, Australopithecus, aeronautics, tourmaline, abstemiousness, exhumation, eukaryotic, exhaustion, neurotransmitter...
Most font sites use the name of the font as the sample text plus the 'quick brown fox' sentence, but that's probably not ideal if you want something short, consistent, and easy to stamp. Maybe a name or something silly like 'gnome fairy' ? I'll be interested to hear what you choose.

Neat idea! I might stamp on vellum to be able to place them over a page to see how the font would look. A gentle heat tool could help with drying, like Ranger’s Heat It that’s gentle enough to not move watercolors (as opposed to Wagner, which is used most of the time.) Or if not vellum, gridded paper.
Maybe an upper and lower case two-word combo of tall and tailed letters and an exclamation point. Nonsense words would be fine. Mybip Grin!
ETA I wrote this before seeing the example. Mine would be simpler with words (fake or real) lined up so each font could be seen against the project.

I would definitely include letters that have an ascender and descender, then one that does not. Something like "day" or "bag" etc.

Im still working though my thought process on this, but I am leaning towards just stamping a letter A and one single number. Usually when I am looking for a font, I am more interested in overall size and can easily flip through to look at asending/descending letters to see if they work.

peachiceteas thanks for tagging me! This thread is right on point with my recent stories but I missed it before Honestly when I started mine I didn't even think about stamping more letters. It takes a long time to stamp out all my stamps in this way, stamping more than one letter would exponentially multiply the time it takes to create the sheet and make the sheets fill up more quickly. I also have had this system for 3-4 years? and I have never wished I had more letters on there. I really just look for the size/basic style and then pull out the set to look at the rest of the letters. If I am torn about a few sets, I will just pull them out and hold them over my spread. This just helps me narrow down the general alpha I want without flipping through all my stamps or forgetting about sets that I have. Of course, this might not work for everyone, but I see the reference sheet as just a way to locate my stamps/remember what I have, not necessarily plan my whole page. Once I decide from my reference sheet the stamp or stamps I think I might want to use, I pull them out and then go from there. Just because I pull a set doesn't mean I have to use it.

I laughed out loud at “menstruation” as a reference word. 🤣

I can just imagine a family member finding your sheets and wondering why you'd stamped menstruation or cauliflower in dozens of different fonts. lol. I cut and pasted the whole list from a website.

I think “fairy” is a great word to stamp - ascender, descender, and the letter “a” which can be so very different font to font.

I’d like to get an “e” in there too, though. I’m also thinking about using my daughter’s name (paige). Really my main hesitation is my oldest tends to get jealous over silly stuff like that. 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

Back in 2015, I did my inventory using several Rolodex. I LOVE it this way. Easy to find stamps for sure. Sorry the pictures aren't great. They are old photos. I love color so I chose to stamp the images in different colors. Notice on each card you can see the manufacturer on the left and the set name on the right. Stamps are stored in alphabetical order by set name in my boxes.
