Apologies in advance for the wordy post, I can't ever be succinct.
Y'all have always been a good source of ideas and perspectives so I am asking for help once again.
We are rolling along with our kitchen redo, appliances ordered, countertop ordered (yes, Y'all made me realize that I needed to replace the old one) sink, faucet and disposal ordered and waiting on installation.
We are working on stripping and restaining the solid maple cabinets from a honey color that have gotten more yellow throughout the years.
I am now down to picking a color for the walls, and have been hem-hawing for weeks. It is down to the wire and I need to make a decision.
DD wants color, any color, just not grey.
Our formal living room is a grey with blue undertones that reads more blue than grey and our formal dining room is a deep red with bright white trim (love it!).
I want something that won't be completely jarring if looking at all three at once. I did that on another house, picked colors I loved without thinking how they would interact and it looked like a traffic light when viewed all together. (Red dining, sage green kitchen and yellow family room. Although it was already a disaster because the soft butter yellow I had envisioned in the family room came out as Ronald McDonald yellow.)
The kitchen in this house has been light yellow for probably close to 30 years. When we took down the boarder you can see where it went from a soft yellow to a dusty weathered yellow.
DS is adamant that there will never be wallpaper of any kind in any house we ever live in again. Ever. (Guess who helped remove wallpaper)
So I would like a color, but not yellow, green, grey, or anything in the brown/tan/cream family. So the color wheel is narrowed down quite a bit, LOL.
I was leaning towards blue, but only hear negative feedback from friends I have asked. One said it doesn't stimulate the appetite (exactly what I need!).
I bought two samples of paint, blue with grey undertones. But they look too dark and muddy(?) DD suggested a clearer, lighter blue.
I fell down the Google and Pintrest rabbit holes and came across Pantone Serenity which is a nice medium blue but after looking at it for awhile I am worried it is too Toy Story blue.
My appliances are stainless black and the countertops are black/grey/cream granite look (solid surface). Cabinets are a medium stain and the floor will most likely be a grey stone look LVP.
If you have made it this far, I appreciate any ideas, suggestions or things I may not have considered or thought of.

Im running out the door and don't have tons of time to look up colors, but so much of what color looks good will depend on how much you are *actually* seeing the color. Just color on a island or one small section of a wall? Or is it all the walls, island, etc. I tend to do a more neutral kitchen with one splash of color (like island cabinets painted a pop of color) vs. painting an entire kitchen a bright color. Its way easier to repaint just an island cabinet that all the walls, etc when you get tired of the color )or realize it looks like a traffic light, lol).

Even before you got that far, I was going to say blue. Find a color wheel and pick the opposite of what your cabinets are coming out to. There will be some shade of blue opposite the honey color. Get samples of a clearer tone or one with more gray in it and put some on your walls to see what you like.

I prefer a neutral basic kitchen with color added in items that are easily replaced or repainted. I like white walls. I actually prefer white cabinets too. And white subway tiles for the area between countertop and cabinet. Color can come in with small appliances or a colorful vase of flowers with a few colorful dish items if your cabinets have a glass door. To me, white just looks clean and promotes creativity when coming up with various recipes. My current kitchen is white, but the countertop is an off white/beige tile that I hate. If I were remaining here, I would definitely change it out with white granite. My kitchen Aid is red as is my coffee bean grinder. I have red placemats on the kitchen table and a large display plate that is red. That is enough color for me personally. You can always change out the accessories when the mood strikes you or for holidays.

idk how old your DD is, but she doesn't really get a vote. my DD (27 now) wanted her voice to be heard in our recent redo, but her taste is not my taste. she is welcome to offer opinions, but **I** get to decide. she now has her own house and does things her way. if it hasn't been changed in 30 years, then you better pick something you love if you will be looking at it for the next 30 years. if you like wallpaper, do wallpaper. you likely won't be changing it again. i agree with the PP that you can add your color on the island (if you have one) as that is fairly easy to change. adding color with accessories is wise if you think you might want to change from time to time. i feel like most people are having one color throughout these days, so i would vote grey. if you want a color that is not grey, my first thought was a blue. go to your local ace and look for joanna gaines colors. that should narrow it down some. all her work looks good and it will be easier to choose from a set of curated colors instead of choosing from every color in the rainbow.

Can you do the same color as your living room but add more white to the paint to make it lighter?

Do your children have good decorating taste? I'm picturing what my daughter would do with our kitchen if she had a say and I shudder. I don't love a different color in each room. I don't think they ever really interact - depending on the layout of your house, of course. And with one room that's already deep red, I might just let that be the room with the color and paint the kitchen the same blue/gray of your living room. Then maybe do red accents in your kitchen and they can interact that way. ETA - just saw ~summer~'s post - great minds think alike! I was thinking white cabinets would look pretty if you haven't already restained yours.

I have been trying to pick a color for our kitchen/family room since fall! They share walls, so they have to be the same color. The open concept look makes it so hard to decorate. I am deciding between a light grey or light beige. I am trying to talk my husband into white family room and kitchen furniture and a white kitchen (the rest of the houses is all his furniture and it's dark, I love my white!). But I don't know if he will agree to white in these two rooms. So I don't want to pick a color until he decides.

Considering you have a gray that reads blue living room and a deep red formal dining room, I would go with white and bring in color via accessories. You are on the precipice of having an overly busy home with so many colors. Finding a blue or gray that works with the existing color will be difficult. Also keep in mind that you have black appliances which already darken a room.
If you are insistent on the kitchen being a color, my suggestion is to take the living room color and have it mixed up at somewhere between 25% and 50% intensity. You get the continuity of the same color.
As for your kids' demands regarding color and wallpaper, unless they plan to live there forever and pay part of the mortgage, they get no vote! There are some fantastic wallpaper prints out there now and it is making a huge comeback. You might be able to find something that pulls all your colors together, so I would not totally rule out wallpaper.

But I don't know if he will agree to white in these two rooms. Why not just ask him? We have all white walls (SW Alabaster White) in our living/dining/kitchen/flex area (old dining room). Almost all our wood furniture is dark wood and it looks great!

But I don't know if he will agree to white in these two rooms. Why not just ask him? We have all white walls (SW Alabaster White) in our living/dining/kitchen/flex area (old dining room). Almost all our wood furniture is dark wood and it looks great! I'm sorry, I meant to say white furniture. We need a new sofa and two chairs, and I really want to pick a neutral sofa/chairs. We have a nice chair but you can only decorate with brown and gold. So I want all grey or beige furniture. And a tv stand and end table I would love in white. He is fine with me picking the paint color.
We had all white walls all over our house until 2005. Then light beige, yellor or blue colors (it has to be very light). But our bedroom has never been painted and it's white. I will look at your suggestion for when I repaint the bedroom. I keep putting it off because we have cathedral celings and I don't enjoy painting on a ladder. But it hasn't been painted in 24 yrs., so it really needs it!

So to add more info, it is an older home circa 1967, so no open floor plan, you don't necessarily see other rooms unless you are in a certain spot.
We have an eat in kitchen, no island. One end is cooking/appliances on two walls so the only wall color showing is the soffet from the ceiling to the top of the cabinet and backsplash under cabinets, although we are thinking of putting glass blocks there, at the very least behind cooktop and sink.
The other wall has two pantry closets on it so the only wall is the 6 inches on each side of the door trim and the 12 inches above to the ceiling.
At the other end of the kitchen is the table area, with paneling under the chair rail and painted wall above. One wall has a wide double window, and each of the two shorter walls have a doorway to other rooms, so maybe 4 to 5 feet of actual painted width.
So overall, not a huge amount of real estate to paint if I ever want to change colors.
BTW, DD is 23, so she is not going to suggest anything too outlandish, LOL. I think she said no grey because she doesn't want us hopping on the grey walls all over house bandwagon that is so trendy. We are not trend followers, and certainly not trendsetters.
I already told her that when we redo the entry hall and staircase and downstairs bath I am using the same color of grey from the living room, just a few shades lighter.
I am not a fan of wallpaper and DS' comment was due to the extremely difficult time we had removing the wallpaper in my old bedroom that I insisted on putting in years ago. It was only one wall, and we had all the right tools and products, it was just a bitch to remove and he swears he still has nightmares about it.
Can anyone help me with the correct words to describe what I am wanting? I don't want the color to me muted or dusky, I want a clean or clear color, or true. Not sure how to say it correctly to make it make sense.

We recently painted our living room and to be honest, the people at the paint store were super helpful. I went when it wasn’t busy, pulled some chips and the gal did a great job of guiding me. I also got samples of a couple colors to find the color that looked best in the room. This was crucial. I ended up with exactly the color I wanted. It took time and patience. I didn’t want to rush and it was worth it.

What about using the same shade as the living room, but 25 or 50 % lighter. That will compliment the two rooms. If you want to coordinate with dining room, go with white.

I'm most certainly not a trend follower or setter, not by far but I did exactly that. "Granite" walls throughout main floor. Didn't follow trends, just winged it. Used paint chips against backsplash etc until I found what popped. Granite gray it was, knowing little about the trends. So much so that I'll probably be the one to put and end to that. Like a thread killer, just by inadvertently following a trend, I will crush and kill it. Gray will be over and soon I'll be back in my unknowing whatever/lame lane. 😜 I'd ask advice from a paint pro and go with what you like, regardless of trend or no trend.

I would choose a neutral color for the walls. You can add pops of color, with your decor (canisters, cookie jar, wall art, towels, cake stand, plants, table decor, etc...).
I would not let a child of any age, dictate what I was or wasn't going to do in my home.

Can you post a picture? so we can get a better idea? so you say you are restaining your cupboards? so what color will they be exactly? With the dark appliances, and the dark counter and cabinets I would definitely go with a really light neutral color. Not blue or grey. We did a light blue grey with our honey colored cupboards, and I hate it. I can't wait to re-paint the walls someday. I would go with a cream or white. you've got plenty of color already going on in there. Esp since you don't have an open concept.

Sherwin Williams has great little sample jugs you can get to take home and try also. We do this every time we paint. Paint just looks so much different when it's actually on the walls.

I just picked navy blue cabinets for our new house. Very different for me.
