My purse, if you want to call it that, is literally breaking down. I am having no luck finding a replacement. I need a bag that is pretty big (I usually carry around one or two books and a knitting project) that has a lot of pockets — better if some are external (I like to put my keys into an external pocket, eg). I would prefer a leather bag that looks professional enough to take to work.
Do you have a bag you love? Help me out!

Ellington (market tote) is my favorite lately, but only one pocket, so it may not be optimal for your needs. There is a pouch included.

Not leather, but consider Tom Bihn in Seattle. Wonderful company that manufactures in Seattle and is devoted to quality, efficient, light weight products - and also devoted to treating their employees well. Most of their products are travel related but they also have shoulder bags and totes.
(They also have a forum where very devoted customers trade advice and answer questions.)
(ETA: There’s also a Tom Bihn subforum on Ravelry as knitters are also fans.)

I love my longchamp tote. So easy to carry.
I’ve had 2 dooney totes in nylon similar to the one in leather posted above and I adored them. They were far better than my long champ, but when I couldn’t find the dooney’s close to me the long champ was a good second.
I’ve had Kate spare nylon. They’re ok.
My leather totes are Tory Burch. I love them.

I am looking at the Almost Perfect zipper tote in the Oversized size. I need one for just toting the extra between home and work or a light weekend packing overnight sort of bag. If truth be told, I love all the sizes but I have to be smart. For now.

I bought a Radley London bag at Christmas time and it's not as big as you would need, but I do love it in terms of its organizing properties and its appearance. The only thing I hate about it is that it has a post-and-hole style for the adjustable strap, and every few days, the hole in the strap stretches out and sends my bag crashing to the ground. I think they've restyled the posts and holes so the post is less rounded and more square in the current bags, but I'm going to just take mine to a shoe repair shop and have the strap stitched so that the post and hole become nothing more than decorative. Love the bag (and the little Scottie dog tag), so this is my way of salvaging it.

naby64 they don't have mine anymore. I also have many of their wrap journals and LOVE them but they also don't sell the ones I have anymore. Sure wish I didn't miss out on their mystery boxes. Those are great prices with fun stuff!

I alternate between J Crew, Madewell and Kate Spade totes for work. They only have a couple of pockets but I use a purse organizer anyway. It makes it much easier to switch between purses because you just pull out the whole organizer and put it into the new purse.

I've looked at this bag more than once. I have a nice Coach bag that is a similar size, but with just one little outside pocket. I'm attracted to the pockets in this bag! Duluth Trading has sales around the usual days (Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Mother's Day, etc). They usually have a 25% off sale, but Cyber Monday (Monday after Black Friday), they have 30%. I've been on a new cognac medium brown tote to use those. I want something leather. Without an attached strap, like the Adhorned bag. But without the rounded corners.

Going to put forward a slightly different candidate but since you mentioned lugging around books and knitting projects, I'm going to recommend the Era M tote by Kipling for those "big knitting project" days. I got this for my mother, an avid sweater knitter, and she loves it. Not leather but super light. Some organisation. One hidden external pocket on the front (perfect for keys or phone). Lightweight. Sturdy. Many different fabrics (patterns and solid colours), some of which change every 6 months. Shown here in the Urban Green Jaquard fabric with contrasting handles:
