DD was into baby dolls at that age - something she can hold with a soft body (have no idea what is on the market these days), books or a puppy in a purse.
ETA always wrap or use a gift bag

Fisher Price Little People...there are lots to choose from. Also push toys are big. (Shopping carts, etc)
Definitely wrap your gift. Kids of all ages love to open presents!

I just sent my DGS a Go Go Zoo set for his 2nd birthday. It's a set of tracks with 2 zoo animals that ride on the track and different stations talk and do differnt things. There's a whole set of animals you can buy separtely. My son said he loves it!

Lexi loves anything by Melissa and Doug. The play food, dress up costumes, puzzles, train set, etc. One of the presents I bought her for her 2nd birthday (earlier this year) was this.. She also has the pizza, cookies, ice cream and fruit ones as well.

I gave my niece a set of dress up shoes and a tutu skirt for her birthday (based on her mom's suggestion). In the past I have given her books or clothes. Oh...another popular thing for both my niece (2) and nephew (4) has been this pop up play tent with tunnels. My sister-in-law said it is one of the best gifts as the kids love it and it's easy to take down and store when they are done playing. They can just set up one tent or set up all the pieces. There are a variety of different styles and designs. I originally got it for my nephew when he was 2. Pop Up Play Tent with Tunnels

I bought Melissa & Doug wooden sandwich making kits for my 2 year old nieces (three of them in different families.) Melissa & Doug wooden foods are a good thing.
Always wrap. Parents still like to unwrap.

DD got a doll and stroller at that age that was a big hit. She only wanted ONE THING for Christmas - a pink whistle. So, if you can find a pink whistle, I recommend it.

Rolls of scotch tape and a huge box of tissues. Really the best gift ever.
And a huge, bigger than gigantic NO to the whistle unless you hate the parents.

When DD was that age she loved her block cart (little wooden push cart with blocks inside), board books, Little People Disney Princess Musical Castle and the princesses, Mickey's Fly 'n Slide Clubhouse, and anything with Elmo. She got the singing Rockin' Elmo with the drums for Christmas and she absolutely LOVED that thing! She also liked the squeeze a song Elmo and Cookie Monster dolls.
