I'm going out to visit my mother who is passing away from parotid gland cancer and feel like I need to help organize something. Yes, I know unnecessary, but I feel the need to "help" somewhere. She has always, since I was child, had a big mess of plastics (Tupperware, saved plastic butter/cream cheese dishes that she had to save) that falls out of the cupboard door onto the floor and there seems to never be a match of lid to base. I was thinking of trying to match the lids to the base, marking each with a sharpie marker (1 lid to 1 base, 2 lid to 2 base, etc.) Has anyone done this and does the marker wash off? She has an active household with friends, my sister's family and her children and their boyfriends, so a lot of disposable lunches and meals leaving house. Any suggestions for easy labeling?

Im sorry you're in this place. To answer your question, no, I havent labeled things like that but I would think using a sharpie would be pretty permanent and not wash off.

I have used sharpie to do what you have planned. It is a permanent mark.
Don't make the mistake I did. I used different numbers on each. Later I got smart enough to use same number on the ones that fit....so I had 2s that were interchangeable for example.

to solve this problem in my house i got deli containers (amazon) three different sizes, 1, 2, & 4 cup. they all stack together, all the bowls on bottoms and all the lids on top.they all stack together and one lid fits all. if you need a different shape, add the rectangle containers with a black bottom and clear lid (walmart, amazon, costco.)
they are cheap (about 25 cents each) so it doesn't matter if they go missing.
never a mess of random containers ever again.

keep the tupperware, get rid of stuff not meant to store stuff. and I like to store the lid on the bottom.. you could mark it.

I put all like containers in a stack then found all the matching lids. Tops and bottoms were then marked 1, 2,etc. Unmatched items were recycled. All lids are stored in one plastic container and bottoms in another.
Advantage is that anyone in the house can easily find the right lid. .
