I know this thread might show up in sneaks in the app so I am going to draw this out so no one sees. I can't sleep so I am up hideously early for me and decided to check what was going on.
I hope that is enough. I am shocked that Simone pulled out.
It first appeared to be an injury but the last news I saw was that it was for her mental health. Jordan apparently did great on bars and Suni got the highest score of any uUS gymnast so far in the event. Pulling for the US team and Simone. Anyone else up?
Only going by what I can read online, not able to figure out how to watch on iPad.

Poor thing. So much pressure on a young person. I hope she's okay.

I’ve been watching on Peacock. I feel bad for her for putting too much pressure on herself. If she knew she was going to do poorly on the other rotations, she did the best thing by pulling out. I would assume it was also a team decision, because that puts immense pressure on the other 3 women, now having to compete it all. Jordan apparently didn’t even warm up on bars, and she really stepped it up by competing them.

I found how to watch, I agree there was too much pressure on Simone, I hope she is ok. I feel for the other ladies too.

She did a recent interview, which aired last night, and she talked about as she's gotten older, she's become more frightened of the things she has to do. When she was younger, as is typical, she had no fear. I wonder how much that plays into how she feels today. Again - I feel so badly for her. I feel like she's been built up so much (same with Katie Ledecky) that they must feel the eyes of the nation are on them. It's just too much.

Holy crap. I am working at home but didn't get up early enough to watch from the start and would rather watch it later when I can give it my full attention. But this thread sucked me in.
I'm shocked she pulled out. I hope the others can stay on form and grab that gold! That's a lot of pressure on them.

I am so sad and disappointed for her. I was also looking forward to watching her. I have been irritated by the media reports the last few days. I know that their job is to create drama and interest, but the things that they said about her and the team have just added to that pressure. I hope that the rest of the team can move forward and do well. I know that she is a leader of the team. Have they said if she is still participating individually?

Damn, that was rough. I can’t imagine the pressure these ladies are under. I hope they see medaling as a win, because it is! Being in the Olympics is a win in general.

I also wonder how much the fact that they don't have fans there to increase the energy and family to help support is making a difference. I am sure Russia and the other teams are cheering.

I just read somewhere that she may have pulled out today to save herself (and heal herself) in time for the individuals. But it’s all conjecture. It must have been an excruciating decision to pull out today.

It must have been an excruciating decision to pull out today. I have mixed feelings about that. I don’t think necessarily think she should pull out today and compete in the individuals. I also think she should not necessarily have been competing in all the events for the team either. She put a hell of a lot of stress and pressure on the rest of the team at the very last minute. Some of the team didn’t even warm up in events they were thrown into. Her mental health is obviously of paramount importance though and I realize it was a very difficult call made very quickly. It is a tough situation all around.

Those girls should be very proud of themselves. So stressful for them, but they did it!
I do think they need to go back to larger teams. Even with four that's just too much pressure. And for these girls to do it with three is just amazing. But it shouldn't be that way.

I was shocked when I read the news a few minutes ago. I’ve never competed at anything even approaching that level of competition, so I can’t say I can even imagine what the stress was like. I hope the press is respectful of her privacy for the next few months, but I can’t see that happening.
I’m really proud of the team for winning the silver! I can’t even imagine the pressure they were under!

I'm a little confused. I know there is a time difference, but earlier on the Today show they were acting like Hoda didn't know about Simone pulling out. Then they said breaking news. Was the earlier segment pre-recorded? But even later she was indicating that she was watching the event and Simone was cheering, but now people are already saying it is over? So, were they able to add another person to the team or not?

Hoda was in the arena before and after and was watching Simone sitting and cheering after she pulled out.
They are wait and see mode for the individual events on Thursday.

I believe it was announced before the start of these games that they would be going back to a five person team for the next Olympics.

Yeah, I was just confused about how the whole event is already over based on the reporting. But, maybe the broadcast is also delayed for me due to my time zone? Not sure.

I'm in Iowa, and know that when I'm watching the morning news shows, like Good Morning America, they are not live. Everything I see on GMA was actually an hour ago, so I assume it's the same with the Today Show on NBC. I started watching the gym final live on Peacock at 5:45 Iowa time, and it was about 6 that Simone dropped out. The 3 remaining USA team women did amazing, and they should be very proud of themselves! There is zero disgrace on any of them! I'm also very excited for Great Britain getting Bronze!

I saw the news about Simone this morning. The Olympics are a lot of pressure. I also think part of it was her drive and pushing herself too far with her new routines and move(s). I wonder too if all of that movement on her body and how hard she comes down affected her joints/muscles? She had definitely pulled back in the prelims. Everyone noted that.

Just wanted to say thanks for the spoiler warning - I wish apple hadn't already spoiled it for me. I stupidly didn't turn off news banners and woke up to the news on my phone. I'll watch later - but wish Simone the best, I agree that the media just makes it so so hard on these athletes!

Sad for Simone Biles. I just want to wrap her in a warm blanket and give her a cup of tea. If she never does another thing in her life, she will still be amazing, as is her family. Congratulations to the rest of the team who really stepped it up in a tough situation. I admire that more than their physical prowess.

I totally agree. I was frustrated watching the qualifiers the other night because it seemed like the other gymnasts couldn't so much as blink without the cameras changing to see Simone's reaction. That's not fair to any of them.

I would like to add: coaches (their own thoughts, actions, words), sponsorships, their own mentality/thoughts/drive/desires, outside world/society (holding them on such a high pedestal), family... The Olympics aren't what they used to be. Regular Joe's competing. Now its if you aren't at a certain level by a certain age, forget about it.
