How fun! I'm glad, but not surprised, it was a successful outing. Kayaking is really a great way to be on the water.

That’s so great! What a fun day.
I actually spent 2 hours kayaking yesterday! I’m on the coast of Georgia with a youth group. It didn’t go as well for me, though. The kids were treating it like a race and I couldn’t keep up! I was absolutely exhausted after the first hour.

Such a good investment In friendships! I love kayaking. I’m doing a little triathlon in September. I’ve always wanted to do a triathlon, but I can’t swim. I found one right where I live that is kayak/bike/swim. I’m so excited for it. It’ll be my first race entry post covid. that’s awesome - I also don’t swim (or bike lol) but I would totally do that!

Thank you basket1lady and arielsmom! I do have a rash guard, and a hat, and swim pants, and sunglasses. So I’m protected from the sun, but I still don’t like it

I haven't been in a while but kayaking is great fun. A kayak was the first large purchase my eldest made on their own. They saw one around the beach when they were 10-12 (?) and after watching for a few minutes declared they would like to buy one with their birthday $$$. And they did. But then we got sucked in and all got one for ourselves and reimbursed them as we bought for entire family. The only time I didn't have fun (or only one way fun) was when just the two of us (above mentioned child and I) went out on our local 450 acre lake, launched at one end and headed to the other. On our way back a STRONG headwind kicked in making forward motion very difficult. Had to stop at sand bar and a couple other places for a break but we finally got back and a forever memory was made, so there's that! Lol Glad you had fun elaine introducing your friends to something to share that joy

That looks like fun! I’m glad they were able to overcome their anxiety, how empowering that must be for them. It’s good they have a friend like you to encourage them. So which are you in the photo? With the pink hat? You all look cute and happy.

What a warm and lovely experience for all of you. Thanks for sharing. My grandson has a summer job teaching kayaking at the Whitewater Center in Charlotte. He has loved this sport since first trying at summer camp several years ago, and is fearless in the water. I get plenty of thrills just watching him in the currents.

Looks like fun, wish I lived close I’d keep you company! Though, I suspect much of it would be helping me out of the water after I tipped myself over Is this safe to do at night? I don’t really do sun and floating along when it’s dark sounds heavenly. Not safe to do at night. By our state's boating law, dawn to dusk for all non motorized boats (ie canoes, kayaks, sailboats). I prefer to paddle first thing in the morning as it's cooler and quieter. The fishing boats do fly by regularly though. Check FBMP for used kayaks, there are always some listed in our area. Be patient for good pricing, late summer is generally a good time to buy boats and accessories.

We love to kayak. My dh has a rotator cuff issue and kayaking aggravates it too much. Thankfully my DD’s all like to go.

Be patient for good pricing, late summer is generally a good time to buy boats and accessories. Yes, Facebook marketplace is a great place to look for a used kayak. For me, there is even a whole FB group dedicated to selling used kayaks and accessories in Northern VA. Craigslist is another place to regularly look. It is important to know your pricing, however. There are people who are trying to sell their used kayaks for what they paid for them, or, even more. Those listings stay there for weeks. Those with good pricing will go within a day. Like everything else, there is a shortage of new pedal drive kayaks (what Dewryce is interested in) right now due to COVID. I found and bought mine online from a kayak store (I was lucky that they had a few that were “blemished” (the logo was missing a piece of a letter.), but had to drive 3 hours each way to go pick it up, and while I was there in Southern VA, there were 2 guys who live close to me in NoVA picking up their new kayaks too. That looks like fun! I’m glad they were able to overcome their anxiety, how empowering that must be for them. It’s good they have a friend like you to encourage them. So which are you in the photo? With the pink hat? You all look cute and happy. I’m the one in the blue hat, and my goofy Hawaiian board shorts. The woman in the pink hat is one of the few women in my life that is actually taller than me. I’m 5’8” and she is 5’10” and gorgeous! She was the most nervous, because she doesn’t really exercise besides bowling, but she is the one who was asking for links for my gear before we were off the water.

I love love love my kayak! elaine , Do you kayak on the Bay? The photos look more like a lake. We live in MD and spend lots of time in and on the Bay but I would love to pa k it up and head west. The pictures people post are always so beautiful in the various waterways. I started with an older Hobie but have added two newer ones to our fleet. We now have 4 kayaks. I’m ready to sell the older Hobie and the fourth non-pedal model in order to buy another new Hobie.

Lol Glad you had fun elaine introducing your friends to something to share that joy I’ve had an experience like that and wasn’t sure I would get my kayak back to the launch area. It was in a little inlet area and I had to try a few different tacks to be able to get my kayak around the point to enter it. It was then that I decided to get a peddle drive kayak, simply so that I could make sure that I could get myself around on the water even when it is windy. It is great that you have been able to kayak as a family activity. It is easier, IMO, than skiing as a family, and involves less falling. 😂 That’s so great! What a fun day. I actually spent 2 hours kayaking yesterday! I’m on the coast of Georgia with a youth group. It didn’t go as well for me, though. The kids were treating it like a race and I couldn’t keep up! I’m lucky that my companions are in their 60’s, not in their teens, so we could all stay together.

I sold my 2 kayaks on marketplace before I moved, during covid when bikes and such were hard to come by. They are a hot commodity for sure. I got stopped by a train in town where it's known to be a long-ish wait for trains, like you should pack a lunch wait. Lol (Ok not that long but long)
Anyway while sitting, I listed them. By the time the train went by I already had multiple people wanting them. Crazy. The first one came and got them the next day.

I’m ready to sell the older Hobie and the fourth non-pedal model in order to buy another new Hobie. I haven’t taken one out in the Bay yet; we do go out on my neighbor’s Zodiac, but that has a 9.9 HP motor on it. I think that mine is a little short for the waters of Bay - I had to go for a 10ft model, since I am the one who has to get it up on the roof of my car by myself. I went with a Native Watercraft kayak that has a propeller pedal drive, rather than fins. I’d love a Hobie someday, but would need a trailer to go along with it because I couldn’t get it on the car. This is my kayak: This is on the Occoquan Reservoir below the dam (also where I took my friends yesterday since I am very familiar with the water there) - it eventually empties into the Potomac. I also kayak on some of the local lakes: Lake Fairfax, Burke Lake and Woodglen Lake. It is great to live in a county where the Parks and Rec maintain so many lakes within 20 minutes of my house. I usually use the kayak as a fishing craft, so spend as much, if not more, time fishing than paddling. Any time that you want to come West and paddle with me, let me know! Or maybe we could meet and do Mallows Bay - they have some nice picnic tables for a picnic afterwards. 😄

elaine - mallows bay is about 45 min from me, I think! I bought 2 blow up kayaks on amazon prime day one year that my dad and I have taken out - wanted to go to Mallows Bay with him but we havent' made it there yet. Does the quality of the water worry you? I saw a warning from a local paddle club posting a map of bacteria in the water, and the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers are in super bad shape. It skeeves me out.

This is my dh and kids hobby together.
A few years ago we realized that because of my dh's work schedule that he didn't spend very much quality or quantity time with the kids. One of his friends took them out and they were hooked. They even fish sometimes from their kayaks.
They now each have 2 kayaks and peddles and thingamabobs and so on's. And a GPS for each so that everyone gets back to where they need to be.

I feel like kayaks in a lake are about the easiest exercise you can do other than walking. Much easier than paddle boarding. I think it takes little to no skill to get in one and go. We almost always take our pups and they make it a bit more challenging, but it is still really easy. We're heading to Granby, Colorado in a few days to go kayaking and mountain biking. I'm all for the kayaking,

My kayak’s seat is broken and this thread has inspired me to maybe buy a pedal kayak instead of getting mine fixed. I’m fortunate to live very close to LL Bean’s flagship store and I’m thinking of taking a drive up there this afternoon! Kayaking is definitely one of those activities that looks daunting until you do it and then you realize how easy it really is, even if you’re a klutz and a bit of a weakling like me!

We have inflatable kayaks for lots of reasons - transporting, storing, something my 19 year old can manage on her own with friends, etc. Yours looks so impressive!

I'm all for the kayaking, YES! I have had 4 major chest surgeries in the past 3 years, each requiring 8 weeks of no exertion recovery, so my upper body is pathetic in terms of strength and conditioning right now, and I can kayak easily in most conditions. That is why I really pushed my friends, even though they were so worried about whether they could do it. It is so empowering to realize that you really can move yourself around a body of water easily under your own power. I really wish that I got into it when I lived in Colorado Springs - it would be so beautiful to kayak in Colorado. Please post pictures if you’d be willing! 😍

I will definitely keep you updated! For this year our plan is to see if I can try one out a few times. I’d prefer to wait until the weather cools down, a lot, but that brings us to October and I’m afraid I’d miss out on many sales and listings. But I can not breathe in this heat & humidity, I hibernate during our summers.

The park ranger we talked with said that they didn’t recommend inflatables for that reason, but we saw a number of young women (college-aged) out on inflatables when we were there. So, you probably would be fine. They have a really cool kayak launch there, which is a contraption that you put the kayak on and you get in without getting wet and then the launch helps propel your boat into the water.
