Amazon has recently launched virtual tours and there are currently 19 on sale for $15. Each tour is private, and live with just you and your guide. You can see the guide but the guide can't see you. It's two-way audio. Along the way you can ask the guide to stop so you can take a photo and you can ask any questions you want. We've done two explore tours of Tokyo as part of our homeschool-one architecture tour and one rickshaw tour where the camera was in the rickshaw while the guide ran around town and both tours were terrific with wonderful guides. On both of ours so far, if we wanted to see something up close or whatever, the tour guide would take us over there. Since it was for Matthew's school, he got to basically direct and of course what interests a 10 year old is different than what interests and adult and both guides adapted to what he wanted to see. He loved seeing the mascots on all the signs for different buildings and landmarks-not on the "scheduled" agenda. The rickshaw guide took him to a racoon statue and rubbed it for good luck and then "high fived" it in to the camera, which Matthew thought was so fun. Tonight we're doing a cultural experience one that came with a box Amazon mailed to us featuring smells and tastes of Tokyo. There are strict instructions not to open the box before the tour-we'll open it with the guide as he goes to various landmarks. I haven't seen the box but I gave it to my mom to inspect to make sure nothing was damaged and she says it's cool. On some experiences, you can actually shop with the guide as he visits local merchants and you direct him on what to purchase and then it's mailed to you. Here is a link to the sale experiences. They drop to $15 at checkout, no code necessary. (Disclaimer: affiliate link). Update: Our sights and smells tour was tonight (not one of the $15 tours). I'll post a spoiler below of what was in the box. This tour was led by the same company that led the rickshaw tour. The guides had clearly talked to each other because she said "Sou told me that you saw this and that and I believe you're familiar already with..." It was really cool and personal. She took us to the temple, we got to hear the monks chanting, she showed us some of their worship practices, took us to a market, let Matthew pick something from a vending machine that she then toasted him with, took him down a market street--all very fun! Update 2: During the tour I asked about another tour they offer. Within half an hour, I had an email from the company giving me more information and offering to let me book with the same guide we just had. That's amazing service! Update 3: With August, there's a new batch of $15 experiences linkWe also just did our fourth experience, this time in Israel (feedback below) Tokyo box spoiler below Our box had a sake cup, matcha candy, the little good luck cats, and incense. Sounds very cool! Are they live tours? If so, how does scheduling work? And what do you do about the time differences?

Sounds very cool! Are they live tours? If so, how does scheduling work? And what do you do about the time differences? Yes, they're live! The time on all of ours has been either first thing in the morning or first thing at night in our time zone, to correspond with the opposite in their time zone. You choose which time slot you want when booking and it tells you what the time is in your time zone. In Japan, all of our tours have had scheduling choices between like 4:00pm and 8:00pm our time, and the tour we're taking next week in Israel had bookings from 4:00am-7:00am. I was looking at the herb class which is here in the states, and there were many choices of time throughout the day.

What??? This sounds amazing!
Our family was planning to travel to Japan this summer :-( This could be a fun thing to do and might help with our trip planning for our tentatively planned December 2022 trip!
I am going to check out all the options right now! Thanks so much for sharing!

This tour only has one review so far, but it's very glowing! And I figure that at $15, even if it sucks, it's not too painful a loss.

Yes, well I wouldn't go right at this moment and not just because of covid. But when we went we felt perfectly safe.

Bump for update. I will say that Japan is a late-waking company so if you want to see the shops open and more hustle and bustle, book for after 11:00am their time. All three of our tours were 10:00am their time and the city was very quiet and most shops were closed.

It was advertised with the title "discover its Biblical links with the book of Joshua and the book of Samuel." He showed us the city and the remnants of the wall, gate, banquet hall, bank, and worship area. He explained the history of the city, the times it was mentioned in the Old Testament, and then its relationship to other landmarks around it. He showed us some of the plant life and then referred to where those trees were referenced in the Old Testament. It was interesting. There's not a lot to actually see-a lot of dirt and rock and photos of archaeological excavations but it was interesting to hear the history.

Yes, I was surprised to see that there are only 3 Israel experiences offered and none are in Jerusalem or other major cities. I know you can apply to offer an experience so I don’t know if it’s just a matter of Amazon waiting for someone to offer that or if they’re actively curating more. My understanding is that the program is pretty new. I go to Paris on Friday

How long do you have to explore after you purchase? Could I get them for Christmas?

I was just reading this thread to my DS, and how you’re off to Paris on Friday. He wondered aloud if a guide would take you to the Red Light District, and queried just how interactive the tours get. 🤦🏼♀️😂

How long do you have to explore after you purchase? Could I get them for Christmas? It seems to vary by tour. You choose your date when booking. You can look at the listing for each tour and scroll forward through the dates to see how far in advance it will let you book. Sometimes I've had more than a month's worth of choices, sometimes only two days. At the end of every tour they ask me what features should be added and the ability to give it as a gift is one of the pre-populated answers so I think they might be working to add that.

And how long are each of these tours? This really sound interesting. Each one is different. I’ve taken one that was 20 min, two that were 45 min, and two that were an hour. You know when booking how long each one is.
