A story written in the Atlantic popped up in my Twitter feed. I started reading it and this one sentence really resonated.
“ They want all the rights, privileges, and benefits of human community without any sense of obligation to be responsible participants in that community."
IMO you can apply that notion to a lot that ails this country..
* gun control * homelessness * healthcare for all Americans * quality education for all Americans * poverty
And this attitude is reflected in how people vote.

You think this applies only to Americans? It applies to so many HUMANS all over the world. Some people do wonderful things. Some people are selfish and horrible. Some are both.
I'm tired of reading about awful Americans as if we've got a lock on terrible behavior. Get off Twitter for a while and look around you for people doing good things. Believe me they are there.
As Mr Rogers said, when you're scared and bad things are happening, look for the helpers. Even something little like a teenager holding the door open for someone with their hands full gives me hope for the future.

Silly me I think we can do better. Sure I’ll look around at the homeless and how they are pushed around because no one wants them. Affordable housing is a problem in CA and every plan to make housing affordable to everyone who wants to live in the state and the area they would like to live in is stopped by man made barriers for petty reasons. Day after day there are shootings and people die. A lot who die are kids. Maybe you need to take a long hard look at what is beyond the door the kid is holding open for you and what is happening in this country.

Morocco has some real selfish assholes, yet I have met some wonderful people that were quite poor and would STILL give you the shirt off their back.

Ok we established there are good/wonderful people out there. No one said there wasn’t.
But despite these good and wonderful people the problems that plague this country and other countries still exist .
Once again I’m only criticizing the United States because I think we can and should do better. And IMO it’s this attitude “They want all the rights, privileges, and benefits of human community without any sense of obligation to be responsible participants in that community." by both the good/wonderful people and the not so wonderful people that is at the root of what plagues this country. Note I’m not saying ALL Americans but it does describe more than a few.
Funny thing about the saying “give you the shirt off their back”. Years ago there was a mass shooting at 101 California St in San Francisco. A guy was unhappy with his lawyer so got a gun, drove about 70 miles to his lawyers office and killed I think it was 9 people. He also died. At the time I was working in the office building across the street. Sometime later I was with some friends and the subject came up. One of the guys said he knew the murderer, had known him for years and was really surprised he did what he did. He said he was the kind of guy that “would give the shirt off his back”.

Look at the decline in mental health just since I graduated 20 years ago- right around the time social media was starting. There's a lot of "keyboard warriors" out there.

Yeah I'd probably be miserable too if I spent every day on Twitter or looking at shit I hate on IG instead of fun stuff. My Facebook is curated to be a happy place, so is my IG, and I don't have Twitter.

You're awfully defensive for someone who only comes here to post the negativity you see on Twitter every day. You get what you give.

Wow, who knew that when I started this thread that a perfect example of the point I was making would actually end up in a post on this thread. Thank you, seriously thank you for making my point so clearly. I’m not sure I could have done it as well as you’ve done in your two posts.
