Just batshit. This is more of conservatives controlling education narratives. Parents need to make sure that they turn out to vote in local as well as state elections.

Batshit, indeed.
A friend of mine moved to Tennessee. and is amazed and not all in a good way. First as she stared at her neighbors confederate flag flying high... and that was just the start of the WTFs.
Loves the weather and some other aspects of Tenn. of course but the cultural shock was (is) something to behold and ponder.

If this passes, we will see a Scopes-like trial very quickly, I'm sure.

Desperate laws from desperate people trying desperately to cling to a past that worked for them and keeps everyone else in their place.

On the way to my favorite fruit and vegetable stand, I heard 2 conservatives on the radio refer to the Jan 6th militants as “political prisoners.” We cannot let these people assume power. There is something very wrong with their thinking.

But, they hate communism, right?
What's more communist than thought control and teaching propaganda instead of reality?

There is something very wrong with their thinking. They have been taught that their beliefs are as valid as others' facts. It is killing America.

"Here a Tennessee school district experience exemplifies wider patterns across the country. A parent insisted that the account of Ruby Bridges, as the first Black student to integrate New Orleans schools in 1960, is hurtful to white schoolkids. Bridges' account describes a "large crowd of angry white people who didn't want Black children in a white school." The parent insisted it failed to offer "redemption" for today's white children. She also objected to another book about school segregation, expressing disapproval of teaching words like "injustice" and "inequality" in "grammar lessons." A clip of Ruby Bridges' chilling experience shows a six-year-old girl being screamed at by a crowd of angry white people spitting and cursing at her. No white redemption on offer here." www.salon.com/2021/08/01/meet-christopher-rufo--leader-of-the-incoherent-right-wing-attack-on-critical-race-theory/Yes, heaven forbid we make white schoolkids uncomfortable. LEARNING ABOUT rocks and bottles being hurled at black school kids is about on par with the actual rocks and bottles hitting you, kwim?!

From the article:
" “Targeting elementary age children with daily lessons on fighting past injustices as if they were occurring in present day what the heck does this even mean, and how can someone determine that?? violates Tennessee law and will sow the seeds of racial strife, neo-racism (and) neo-segregation,” Robin Steenman, the chair of the Williamson County chapter of Moms for Liberty wrote in the complaint. "
Basically, it sounds like ANYthing in history lessons that someone might take offense to could be said to violate this policy. What the heck IS this political party trying to do, for gosh sakes!?! Do they really want us to go backwards THAT much? ? ?

LEARNING ABOUT rocks and bottles being hurled at black school kids is about on par with the actual rocks and bottles hitting you, kwim?! I'm white. I was taught about Ruby Bridges, about lynching, about the children's March and the attacks on kids...throughout my education It made me uncomfortable. It made me sad. Not once did I feel I needed redemption. I felt like those people were horrible and that I felt bad for the victims and I vowed to never act like that. I don't understand why being uncomfortable is bad. Being uncomfortable causes us to act. It causes us to change.

I just can't fathom the implications. I guess there will be no Black History Month in Tennessee schools. The schools won't dare to go there.

Yes. My Democratic ds now lives in Georgia. ugh. Thankfully no fines in the schools at the moment but you know the crazies are just itching to undo all Stacy Abrams' hard work. My ds is militant with voter registrations and getting information out.

So they're making laws to make sure the white kids remain comfortable?!

Confederate flags are so common that I have to wonder what it would be like to be shocked by one. We should be shocked by them, but it’s hard to be when they’re all around. I guess I was kind of shocked that there was one in almost every souvenir shop window in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg this summer. I guess that’s what sells there ☹️

These laws have been big news in lots of red states all summer. Tennessee isn’t the only state to pass a very similar law. It’s why there has been all the talk about critical race theory.

It’s why there has been all the talk about critical race theory. I see now that there are several states - I am aware of the resistance to CRT, but I didn't realize that such laws had actually been passed. I wish there were a way for me to have civil and assuming-good-intent discussions across this political divide. I hear a lot of "THEY believe xyz..." (from both sides!) but I don't want to hear what one side THINKS the other side believes; I want to say directly what I believe, and I want to hear directly what someone across the aisle believes - no flame-throwing allowed. I really do want to understand, even if I ultimately disagree; I also want to be understood, even if the other party ultimately disagrees. Right now, I really don't understand.

In Colorado... when I drive back from my family in MO and OK.. The last 30 miles home I take a back way.. this is near Denver.. literally there are two houses, middle of nowhere, that fly the confederate flag.. it's been like that for a few years. Blew me away.

Yep. The GOP model is for rich white people to educate their own kids, whether through religious homeschooling or private school, and for everyone else to just go straight to prison labor camps to produce for the GOP elite. (Except for fertile women, who will be plucked out and forced to bear children for the elite.) Sound familiar?
