How many of them were vaccinated? My DD’s friend down the street has a LEO father…and none of them are vaccinated by choice.
I’m not trying to dismiss the deaths in anyway, but it’s a bit dishonest without all the info. If they weren’t vaccinated and died, I’m sorry for their families but my guess is that the exposure risk is high. If they didn’t get vaccinated and they could have, that’s on them.

Similar percentage of employees in his department are vaccinated as at my prestigious law firm where I work. Either way, if they weren’t vaccinated but got it on the job from citizens, then what? BTW, many LEO couldn’t get vaccinated beginning of the year even if they wanted to (mine got his in early March which was about a month before I became eligible along with more open guidelines in my state) I imagine some of those who died didn’t even have the opportunity to be vaccinated yet served for almost a year in the trenches without vaccination. While I watched friends working remote with no risk of exposure and much younger jump the line for a vaccine. Sure is easy to scream, ‘but unvaccinated!’’ BTW, you may want to look into the demographics of who is choosing not to get vaccinated, especially among police officers. I believe vaccine is the best way to prevent covid but I do not believe in treating those who choose to not get vaccinated as less than. I also believe we all need to keep masking up. Even those of us who are vaccinated. . It’s clear to me you didn’t even read the links provided by others in this thread (check second post in thread) with the death stats of LEO who died this year. More than half of those that died of Covid in 2021 died in January. Before the vaccine was available. Please do some research. Here is a link with many of the LEO who died of Covid this year: www.police1.com/coronavirus-covid-19/articles/covid-19-law-enforcement-deaths-3ftkdPnVffq55iHU/

It's a great (but sad) one. I also did not realize that you can support them through Amazon Smile so I just changed my support organization to them. Excited I can do that!

I didn’t mean to offend and apologize for doing so. And, you were right, I didn’t read the links. My whole family is vaccinated and we are still wearing masks. I was just sharing that around here, and it’s more than just the one, the red county I’m in has a lot of LEO and other first responders flaunting their anti-vacation stance. And I should have kept my mouth shut. This virus has given those folks one more risk in an already high risk job. It is hard for me to not think less of those people that could be vaccinated now that it is readily available but are in your face not going to get it. They are putting everyone that can’t get it, at more risk and I think it’s extremely selfish. I think less of selfish people, regardless of why. It’s not a personality trait I like to be around or tolerate. It is absolutely a personal choice but it doesn’t come without consequences.

Even those of us who are vaccinated. I don't think she was trying to offend. I feel like if you are vaccinated in any high risk exposure job...ie LEO, healthcare, dental, etc. you are at least trying to prevent getting sick and spreading it. BUT if you aren't getting vaccinated, for whatever reason, you are taking that risk of getting serious COVID. And that's on you. Do we treat vaccinated and unvaccinated pts with COVID any differently? absolutely not. Except that pretty much 100% COVID in ICU are unvaccinated.

it is offensive when someone says, "If they didn’t get vaccinated and they could have, that’s on them."
so many people on this board and elsewhere make it clear that they are happy with unvaxxed (and, of course, they must be trumpers) dying.
i suppose you can think that way if you want, but i find it distasteful to actually say it.

There’s a crapload of difference between saying it TO a person who is sick or dying of COVID, and saying it during a discussion on a board where we discuss things.

I don't see it as a red or blue issue as I have seen people from both sides not vaccinated. Just makes me sad that there is so much misinformation out there and people make their decision to get vaccinated or not off of incorrect information.

Unvaccinated people complaining that we have to start masking again, that we have to do shut downs again, that our ICU is full of UNvaccinated pt's. NOT a one vaccinated. That to ME is offensive, and selfish.

I was curious about vaccinations rate and how that differs by profession - health care, teachers, law enforcement etc. I'm sure that where you live is a factor, too, urban or rural, red vs blue state etc. Hopefully rates will improve across the board when the FDA grants full authorization. Here's what I found Police Officerswww.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/05/02/police-low-vaccination-rates-safety-concerns/Police officers were among the first front-line workers to gain priority access to coronavirus vaccines. But their vaccination rates are lower than or about the same as those of the general public, according to data made available by some of the nation’s largest law enforcement agencies. At the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, just 39 percent of employees have gotten at least one dose, officials said, compared to more than 50 percent of eligible adults nationwide. In Atlanta, 36 percent of sworn officers have been vaccinated. And a mere 28 percent of those employed by the Columbus Division of Police — Ohio’s largest police department — report having received a shot. Police ambivalence about immunization finds a parallel among other front-line workers. Just 52 percent of health-care workers surveyed by The Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation between Feb. 11 and March 7 said they had received at least one dose. Some of the differences in police uptake of the vaccine reflect disparities among the communities they serve. Hawaii, where 80 percent of officers in Honolulu have received at least one dose, has administered more doses per capita than all but four states, and the Democratic governor, David Ige, has moved forward with plans for certifications known as vaccine passports, a cousin of vaccine mandates. A greater proportion of residents in Denver County are vaccinated than in, for example, Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, or Fulton County, which includes Atlanta. Theres an interesting chart with Honolulu at the highest for law enforcement officers with 80% vaccinated and Phoenix at the bottom with only 23%. Health CareVaccination rates are surprisingly low for health care workers. www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/70/wr/mm7030a2.htmResidents of long-term care facilities (LTCFs) and health care personnel (HCP) who work in these facilities were prioritized for early COVID-19 vaccination. Achieving high coverage in this setting is critical to preventing additional outbreaks. During March 2021, 300 LTCFs reported COVID-19 vaccination coverage for their HCP. COVID-19 vaccination coverage was highest among physicians (75.1%) and lowest among aides (45.6%). Vaccination coverage among aides was lower in facilities located in zip code areas with higher levels of social vulnerability. www.webmd.com/vaccines/covid-19-vaccine/news/20210628/huge-number-of-hospital-workers"Health care workers are not monolithic," says study author Jagdish Khubchandani, professor of public health sciences at New Mexico State University. "There's a big divide between males, doctoral degree holders, older people, and the younger low-income, low-education frontline, female health care workers. They are the most hesitant," he says. Support staff typically outnumber doctors at hospitals about 3 to 1. Educationwww.wsj.com/articles/most-teachers-are-vaccinated-union-says-11623951327The vast majority of the country’s largest teachers union’s members have received at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and most have finished out the school year teaching in person as some contemplate leaving the profession. The National Education Association, which has three million members nationwide, said about 86% of its members have received at least one dose of the vaccine, up from 49% a month ago, according to a survey released Thursday. The survey in which 2,690 members were polled was commissioned by the union from May 19-26. The rapid acceleration of vaccination has bolstered educators’ enthusiasm to return to the classroom. About 76% of those polled said they are prepared to return to full-time in-person instruction, and most have closed out the school year spending some time in front of students. Just 3% report teaching exclusively online. About 11% said they would either not be vaccinated or are unsure of their plans. The American Federation of Teachers, the country’s second largest teachers union, said last month that 89% of its members have been fully vaccinated or want to be. “Educators are ready for the hope and promise of having all of their students learning in-person this fall, knowing there are going to be opportunities and challenges we still must face,” said NEA President Becky Pringle in a statement. Ms. Pringle said that the stress of the past year on teachers needs to be addressed, citing a survey result showing that one of three teachers said they are thinking about leaving the profession or retiring early. The union president said what was particularly troubling was that teachers who are early in their careers say they may leave the profession at “alarming rates.” Nearly 30% of teachers with less than 10 years of experience said they are thinking about leaving teaching earlier than planned. The NEA is calling for ongoing safety improvements to be made to school buildings, saying many buildings still lack proper ventilation. One-third of those polled said safe ventilation has been implemented in their schools. Across all professionswww.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.04.20.21255821v3.fullVaccine hesitancy varied widely by occupation category: 9.6%, (95%CI, 8.5-10.7) in life/physical/social sciences to 46.4% (95%CI, 45.1-47.7) in construction/extraction. Vaccine hesitancy varied widely by occupation category, from approximately 10% in people working in life, physical or social sciences, education, legal professions and computer and mathematical careers, to greater than 40% among people working in installation, maintenance or repair, farming, fishing, or forestry and construction, oil and gas extraction or mining (Table 1). Vaccine hesitancy was also relatively high (approximately one-third) among those in production, which includes food processing and meat packing, and transportation and material moving. There was also a range in COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy among healthcare workers, which was 14.1% (95%CI, 13.7-14.5) in practitioners/technicians and 15.9% (95%CI, 15.4-16.4) in support professions. Pharmacists had the lowest hesitancy (range 8.5%, 95%CI, 6.8-10.2). Physicians (12.2% [95%CI, 11.2-12.3]) and registered nurses/nurse practitioners (11.7% [95%CI, 10.6-13.9]) had relatively low hesitancy versus licensed practical/vocational nurses (19.0% [95%CI, 17.6-20.4]). Home health/personal-care aids, medical assistants, emergency medical technicians/paramedics, and nursing assistants/psychiatric aides had the highest hesitancy (range: 20.5% [95%CI, 19.2-21.8] to 23.1% [95%CI, 21.2-25.0]).

Those who don't get vaccinated say they are exercising their choice, so how can saying 'that's on them' be offensive? It being 'on them' is exactly what they asked for - personal responsibility. Death just happens to be a consequence of that anti-vaxx choice so I'm sure they are making an informed choice right?

How stupid does one have to be to fail to understand that dealing with all sorts of humanity - high and low, sick and well -- you NEED to be immunized against whatever crap that humanity is carrying? And - these days, the crap that the humanity is carrying is deadly. I understand that my "very bad attitude" toward the unvaccinated offends some of this board -- but one's failure to get vaccinated - for reasons other than documented medical reasons or age -(and do not start about when they got ill -- I totally mean SINCE THE VACCINE HAS BEEN WIDELY AVAILABLE) means that one accepts the consequences of one's bad choices and I am tired of being penalized for one's bad choices. I'm already concerned about the mutations moving off the spike protein -- and the more idiots remain unvaccinated the more the virus replicates and mutates -- and mutations imperil us all.
