I have two a/c units for my house - one of those is out. They are both at end of life, so rather than just replace one, it would probably be more cost-efficient to replace them both at the same time. Well, I just got my first quote, and OMG they want TWENTY-THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!!! One is $11K for the 2 ton one, and the other is 12K for the 3 ton one.
Is this the going rate these days? Have any of you replaced yours lately? Was this about what you spent?

We just did, it is for a 1100 sq foot house so I don't know what the size is, but it was $6500. More than what others were saying it was supposed to be!!

Yep. That was about the going rate when we replaced both of ours two years ago. All in was about $22K.

hard to say what the going rate is. is that for inside and outside parts? i would estimate about 10ish K each for our house.

ok - so my first quote seems to be a bit above average but somewhere in the ballpark. Crossing my fingers that my next quote will be lower. Sounds like 16-20k is the sweet spot. Wish me luck!

we replaced the one at the old house 4 summers ago - and it was $7500. We went through Lowes - they sent out a contractor to estimate, we paid Lowes, and the contractor did the work. We were very happy with the contractor and have continued to use them

Keep in mind that a number of us are quoting prices pre-COVID. The prices of everything has gone up, so I think that your quote sounds about right. I will hope for you that you’ll find the price you are looking for!

We saved quite a bit last time by ordering a unit from HVACdirect.com and contracting with a local HVAC tech to install it. You skip the retail markup.

We unfortunately have 3 units that are nearing the end. Any kind of savings will help with what I’m sure will be major, major sticker shock for me.

That doesn't sound out of line to me. We replace ours 11 years ago for $10,000 ( single unit, 1700 sq ft, single story home).

We installed 3 wall-mounted, ductless units for $11,000 last year.

If your ductwork isn’t in good shape you may need to budget for replacing that as well.

Yep, replaced 2 end of life units first week of January this year. Total $26,000!!! I got 3 quotes and they were within a few thousand. I picked the company that creeped me out the least. It was hard having them traipse through the house for 3 days straight (one unit in attic through the master bedroom closet the other under the house) and then deal with the company quality check later and then the county inspector. So, it hurts more than your wallet.
I ended up with quite a bit of cosmetic damage to the door leading to the attic and the trim on the door to under the house plus lots of dirty handprints to clean but I was so worn out from my mastectomy surgery just 2 weeks before that I didn't have the energy to complain. I just wanted them out of my house. My heater stopped working on Christmas Eve. I didn't get new units until January 9th and it was very cold. Isn't that special!!!

Three years ago we replaced the bigger and small units, 4 and 2.5 ton for $26,000.00 and it was a really great price. We got a few quotes over $30,000.00. So that price does not seem too far off.

I needed a new condenser in 2018. My house is 1300 square feet and I was quoted around $7,000 for the condenser and labor. I was stunned. A couple of friends got quotes to do new a/c units this year and the cost they were quoted was nearly $20,000. I have no idea how anyone can afford that.

Yes. I replaced one about 5 years ago for $13K and the other about 10 years ago for $8K. So $21 a long time ago. Last month, the coils went - $3K. Not under warranty

We replaced one in the spring (condenser and A coil, DH says) for $4000 and another about 3 weeks ago for $4900. Both were 2.5 ton. We're in the midwest FWIW.
Guess I have to get used to the mindset of this not being a "new" house and things breaking. It was new when we moved in . . . but that's been 14 years now!

I'm in a group of 6 homes, and I'm the last hold out of the 6 for the water heater to go, so I'm sure that's coming up pretty soon! At least once those get replaced, I should get a reprieve from anything major aside from appliances for a few years.

FIL is sending his guy coming over to look at mine today, so maybe he'd be willing to go this route. Seems like men of his generation always "have a guy" so I probably should have started there LOL!

I'm starting to feel better about the cost of having ours replaced a couple of years ago. It was over $10k and I thought that was outlandish, but I guess it isn't.

IIRC, the company actually had a list of contractors in the area who work with them. Some don't install any unit their company didn't sell you. But if he "has a guy," that's awesome. Good luck! I know we saved several thousand going this route.
