Assuming you have a long stretch each year that you do not us the ac, do you cover it if it is outdoors or leave it as is?

Leave as is. Ours usually does not turn on from around November to April/May. But there may be an unexpected heatwave in December. No one has ever mentioned covering it. This is the first time I’ve heard the suggestion.

I saw your title and started laughing thinking… what is this “off season” that you speak of?

We don't cover it, but we have dozens of 50 foot cotton trees surrounding our property. Our air quit last week and the guy cleaned out a bunch of cotton from our unit. We need it covered in cotton season and that is when we use it.

I was told not to cover it completely. For winter, I got a trash can lid, put it on top, and weighted it down with a heavy rock.

I live in New England and we cover ours from about October until May. We get snow and ice. My husband always did it so I continue doing it. I have never noticed if my neighbors do or not (I have a townhouse).

I saw your title and started laughing thinking… what is this “off season” that you speak of? OP and I live in the land of possible snowstorms September through May. Then again it could be 90+ those months too. Off season generally means "off week" for 8 months out of the year. Colorado is always a weather adventure.

Our HVAC guy said to put something on the top to keep out debris, but not cover the full unit because that makes it too cozy for mice.

We cover ours and it's buried in snow by about January.

DH and I recently decided to start looking for a new place to live and Colorado is on our list There is a saying here “don’t like the weather wait 10 minutes and it’ll change;” it’s just that snow isn’t on our list of probabilities. I think many places have that 10 minute rule. While our weather is GENERALLY pretty mild most days, and we don't have the heat and cold extremes often, we do have changing weather. I had recess duty for 28 years. I had snow boots and a winter coat in my closet all year. We would have a late start because of snow or cold in the am, and by lunch, kids were playing outside for recess. Today our high was 91*, but after the sun goes down behind the mountains, a walk at 80* will be the perfect temp. Thankfully our humidity isn't awful. I love to visit other states and countries, but I prefer our 4 seasons and love that being outside is almost always an option. Highly recommend Colorado for a new home. So gorgeous.

Our HVAC guy said to put something on the top to keep out debris, but not cover the full unit because that makes it too cozy for mice. Our guy advised us to do something similar. We live in the northeast and have never covered ours. One year we had a chipmunk(s) nest in ours anyway and it chewed through the wiring for the starter. $350 later...

Hmmm. We do cover ours. We only use the AC maybe 15 days out of the whole year. Usually 5 days each in July/August/September. We’ve not had issues. But then again, we used to have a cat.

Assuming you have a long stretch each year that you do not us the ac, do you cover it if it is outdoors or leave it as is? Yes I do. But I’m in the northeast and can’t risk a sheet of ice—-it has happened—-sliding off my very steep pitched room onto the AC unit.

That’s because you use yours year round. Many of us don’t.

Ours is a heat pump too so it runs in the winter, can't cover it. If it were unused in the winter season, I would cover it though!

We cover ours to protect from snow, leaves, and - ugh - the cottonwood, which gets into the screen. Nearly everyone in our townhome complex does the same.

I don’t cover it because my HVAC guy (the plumber) told me not to.

Ours came with a vinyl cover so I put it on. I cover it and pull the breaker and flip it over just in case someone were to accidentally turn it on inside even though I turn the cool option off. It gets covered in snow from October - April.

Are your AC units not also your heaters? Our unit gets year round use, whether it’s AC or heat.

No, we have a heat pump so it’s used year round. It cools in the summer and heats in the winter.

Not a thing in So Cal. But no ice here either unless you are in the mountains. We have a family home in Tahoe but no AC there.

Ours is a heat pump too so it runs in the winter, can't cover it. If it were unused in the winter season, I would cover it though! Is the outside unit (compressor?) for a heat pump smaller than one for a traditional AC unit? And do you also have a furnace, or does the heat pump heat your whole house?
