I was thinking pre-bagged popcorn, but I don't want to just take salty stuff when just sitting for so long.

These are some non-messy snacks without nuts (in case of allergic folks nearby) without strong odors that we take on trips & to sporting events:
Sweets * craisins/dried cranberries * fruit leather/bars * nutrigrain-type breakfast bars * kettle corn popcorners (popcorn "chips") * dried pineapple bits
Salties * combos (those pretzels w/ cheesy stuff inside) * dried cheese crisps or "moon cheese" * pringles - nothing w/ garlic or onion though! * bugles * cheez-its

On long car trips, we like to take grapes and peeled clementines. Sometimes we bring celery sticks or raw sugar snap peas. Trail mix is more filling, if that's what you want.
For junk food, nothing beats M&Ms for being sweet and non-messy! I find pretzels to be less messy than chips.

Grapes are good if you want something more hydrating. You could freeze them to keep them cold longer.

For something sweet, either the Nutella or Biscoff snack packs that come with wafers/cookies and a small tub of Nutella or Biscoff to dip into.
The squeezable applesauce pouches work well traveling.
You can also easily find individual snack packs of seasoned and pitted green or kalamata olives.
Individual snack packs of beef jerky.

The answer is always M&Ms. ETA peanut M&Ms if you want some protein, too.

I'm diabetic and have several main food sensitivities. I carry food with me always!
I bring trail mix, Goldfish pretzels, Kind bars with protein, baby carrots, a peanut butter individual sachet, fruit leather, and Wheat Thins. They pack down well, don't crush easily, don't need refrigeration, are a mix of protein and some boosts if my blood sugars get low. I can fit it all in a quart sized bag, too. If I know I'm traveling over a meal, I'll also include a pb&j as well.

We usually do grapes, an apple or a banana for a fruit option and then trail mix, protein bars and a bag of Flipz (white chocolate covered pretzels) to cover the salty/sweet hunger pang.

Do they have some sort of jelly checking machine, or did you have to open the sandwich for inspection?

I buy onigiri π and I eat that on long flights. It keeps me full because I know breakfast is nothing until I get to the hotel.

They roughed it up a bit, tried to open it inside the baggie then asked me to open it. It was silly, but in all fairness it was early on in the new 3 oz restrictions and things were a little chaotic.

Roughed it up! I love it! The proper solution in this situation is to eat half the sandwich. Then ask for 3 ounces of milk to wash it down.

You forgot to add tuna fish sandwich, egg salad sandwich and salmon sandwiches. PLEASE - FOR THE LOVE OF EVERYONE'S STOMACH - NO TUNA ON AN AIRPLANE. There was a commercial a while back with Candace Cameron working on a tv set and being too busy to stop for lunch so she has one of those bags of tuna. Every time I saw it I felt bad for her coworkers. Hope she wasn't about to film a kissing scene!

Crackers with cheese and maybe some meat to go with. Tides you over. Then some caramel filled M & M's for dessert.

I took many many long haul flights when we lived overseas. I like protein bars, dried fruit, pretzels and then some kind of treat. I would not take anything that could be squished in your bag (fresh fruit) or anything really messy. And water. Drink lots and lots of water. Every time they offer a drink, I ask for 1 or 2 glasses of water.

please not peanut butter or nuts, too many of us are allergic
Even you eating them and touching the armrest or such is a problem
even for the people on the next flight, cause you know they donβt clean well

But not bananas that are ready to be turned into banana bread, 4 of them, and then refuse to put the peels in the trash because they are good for your garden, all on a 6 hour flight. I was ready to strangle Peggy. Finally, 4.5 hours in, the flight attendant made her give up the peels. It smelled so sickly sweet. I'm still pissed off at Peggy. Where ever she is.

Dried soft mango and a couple of squares of dark chocolate. And Redvines, but you have to put them in a baggy, as their own packaging is too crinkly.
