Otto is well on track to live up to his "giant breed" billing... he's 72 pounds at just over 6 months.
We've had a variety of beds for him and he's never used any of them regularly. His preference is to sleep on the hardwood floor. I have unreasonable guilt about it, though lol. I want him to be comfortable (yes, I know this is what he is choosing so it must be comfortable to him and I know I'm being irrational lol)
Do your dogs use beds regularly? If they don't, did you ever give up on having dog beds in the house, or did you always keep one just in case? Was there a "magic bed" that got your floor sleeper to use a bed? If so, tell me about it!

My dogs over the years ... ranging in weight from 50 - 100 lbs ... actually never really used their "dog beds" ... we always owned a traditional squishy bed ... usually bought from Costco because they are big ... but the cats usually slept there more than the dogs Our Labs liked to sleep in their Vari-Kennels ... they grew up spending a lot of time in them because we worked out of the home and so they felt comfortable in there with the doors open when we were home The Malamute was a sofa sleeper ... spoiled rescue pup! The last 75 pounder rescue (Golden Retriever/Chow mix) was happy to just sleep on the floor ... most of our house is carpeted so that was her choice ... thank goodness I own a great vacuum! Now I only have snooty cats that sleep on the toss cushions

My dog is a mix, but part Bernese - he does not like soft bedding period. As a puppy he used to pull anything soft out of his crate - he is an absolute floor sleeper. He doesn't mind the elevated dog bed - Coolaroo - is the brand I think - it's basically a trampoline. We got it to teach him place, and knew there was no way a traditional dog bed would work. He still prefers the hardwood or tile if given the option - and bonus if it's near an a/c duct. I think they're just bred for the cold and summer is tough. He has zero interest in any type of soft dog bed - doesn't even lay on our wall to wall carpeting - just glanced at where he is as I'm in the family room that has carpeting and he's dozing on the hardwood as close as possible to me - but not on the carpet.

My brother has a large breed and got Hank a baby mattress! Honestly, we made fun of him at first (especially because he never wants children and has never been in a baby store). However, it has been the best think for Hank. They use a fitted sheet which is easy enough to put in the wash when needed. Hank likes it because he stretches out, which a dog bed with sides would just get in the way.

Our German Shepherd has a bed, but he doesn’t use it. He likes the floor, or at night he will lay on the couch. The couch is a central part in the house, where he can “monitor the situation” as we say. He can see our master bedroom, both doors and the stairs where my kids are. If he lays in our bedroom with us at night, it’s in the doorway.

We had a Newfoundland that slept in a Kurunda bed. kuranda.com/They are indestructible. Our beagle loved his, too!

Our 70 pound lab has a Kuranda bed with a couple of sheepskins on it in our family room. She also has a big round squishy Costco bed where she eats her bones, as the cover comes off for washing. She sleeps on our bed at night and will also snooze on the sofas.

Charlie never did… we tried a few different kinds but he wasn’t interested. Lucy, on the other hand, does. Occasionally. And since she started, now Charlie does sometimes, too.
But they’re both laying on the hardwood floors right now, next to a pet bed, so… 🤷🏼♀️

George (100 lb Pyr mix) has a round bed from Costco that he sleeps on. The bathroom floor he sleeps on, several spots on the carpet he chooses due to his ability to keep an eye on all occupants of the house without moving more than an eyelid. Finally he’s got a super plus size bed I ordered from chewy that he likes to eat his treats on. It’s rather dilapidated, but he gets very upset when I take the cover off to wash it.

Our dogs generally slept on dog beds from Costco, which they seemed to like just fine. The cats like them too! Our neighbor gave us a bed from Orvis (her lab will only sleep on the floor) and our elderly lab chooses that bed over the Costco bed, 95% of the time.

Sounds soooo much like Otto, and now that I think about it, our previous Berner too. If we’re on the couch, he’ll lie on the wood floor as close to us as possible without being on the area rug.

Well, if you’re my grandparents you let your ginormous Great Danes sleep in between the two of you in your king size bed. Then when you pass the bed down to your broke granddaughter you have to explain why there are 3 big indentions in the bed.
The only other really large dog I’ve been around for a significant amount of time preferred the couch (and someone’s legs), but he would use a dog bed.
I came in here hoping for photos of Otto!

Our GSDs have all preferred the floor and our current doggie prefers the floor in the kitchen or utility room by the back door. I suppose he likes to be cooler than us. The cats love the dog beds, the dogs aren’t interested. When we put something down on the carpet it’s usually half an old duvet (I think you call them comforters) that we can throw in the wash regularly. Otto wouldn’t sleep in comfort in the wild, let him stick with what he prefers.

I think each dog is different. My border collie/husky never slept in any of the beds we bought for her, much preferring the floor. My current dogs enjoy their beds, sofa, hardwood, rugs, and tiles!! I have hard plastic ‘basket’ beds with a big cushion insert and a blanket. The big squishy beds stink after a while and they’re difficult to wash.

Our dogs are obviously spoiled, as they all like their beds. Our current lab is the worst and needs a pillow, too. DH found a bed like this at Costco about 10 years ago, but I don’t think ours is cooling because Emma lays on the tile when she’s hot. . She likes it so much, we went out and bought a second so that she would have one in the family room and one in my office. What dog doesn’t need her own memory foam dog bed? Or course, this is just for daytime use. We have a king sized bed because Emma sleeps with us and is a bed hog!

I wanted my big boys to have a bed so I bought ONE to see what would happen. They both prefer the hardwood floor also. Well then crazy enough, I found one fo them in our toy dog's bed! The both now on occasion will use it instead. The one that really likes it will literally carry it where he wants, put it down, and curl up into a ball and lay in it. His head is off of the side but he loves that. It's actually hilarious. Here is the one we have. It comes in many sizes. It's lasted for years and has really turned out to be a great bed. All 3 dogs use it at some point in the day but they never fight for it because they never seem to want it at the same time. tinyurl.com/3yh64em2

Our guy (bernese/lab mix) liked beds, but we couldn’t find one big enough to fit him so we used a crib mattress. It was perfect for him.

Our GSD definitely prefers the floor. He’ll get in the bed for quick cuddles when we lie down and again in the morning just before we get up, but won’t stay there. Much prefers the hardwood floors or the slate floor in the entryway.
His mama, our son’s dog, is the opposite. She loves to sleep in the bed and lay on the couch. She stayed with us for six weeks recently and it was interesting to see the differences in them.
Neither cares for a dog bed on the floor at all.

I came in here hoping for photos of Otto! Here he is, being a man spreader and looking like he just told his driver to take him back to his mansion lol And then when it was 99 degrees yesterday and simply just did not want to go for another minute.

My GSD (108 lbs) has a variety of places he likes to sleep. Since it's summer he mostly prefers the floor in a cold dark place. I also bought him a regular upholstered chair from marketplace that he likes to chill in occasionally. He also has a large memory foam dog bed (I think it's a Serta). That's where he likes to bring his treats and chew on his bones. I found that Homegoods has the best deals on dog beds. Beds for large dogs can get crazy expensive!

Tucker's bed was our living room couch. We did get him a cooling pad for the back of the van for when we traveled, but other than that from the time he was a puppy he had zero interest in a real dog bed.

If so, tell me about it! I do not have large breeds but my Aunt has 3 large lab/chow mixes. They LOOOOOVE the raised mesh beds. Since large breeds tend to have some hip and back issues as they age, these alleviate some of the pressure and allow air from underneath.

Our 100lb GSD has always preferred just the floor - even when that's concrete/tile/wood. He absolutely will NOT entertain the idea of a pillowy bed. We just folded a king sized comforter into fourths and he'd lay on that happily. In the last couple of years (he's 10 now), he's taken to egg crate style memory foam beds that are maybe 3" thick, but no more. We got a new one that's probably more like 4-5" thick and he will lay right *next to* it but not on it.

My dog that died in June had a really nice bed from Costco. She used it sporadically...the cat used it more. I just got a puppy and we got another Coscto dog bed, and she laid on it last night, so hopefully she will use the bed. Stella's bed was enormous. It was like a mini couch. If you have a Costco near you try checking out their beds. They are very inexpensive.

We have an enormous bed we bought from Costco for our Labradoodle, and she uses it about 70% of the time. The rest of the time she lays in the hardwood, and sometimes the tile! Just depends how she is feeling.
I was just at Costco today and they also had those sling-like beds there. Our dog trainer is a Berner breeder, and she always uses that type with her dogs. You can always try, and if he doesn’t take to it, you can always return.

Our big guy is an equal opportunity lounger. He will sleep on one of his two Costco dog beds sometimes (one in the family room and one in our bedroom), other times he chooses the carpeted floor in the family room, the foam anti fatigue mat with a little rug over it in the kitchen, or on the foot of our bed at times at night (although he typically won’t stay there all night, he usually gets too hot and bails to sleep on the floor or the dog bed up there. Every dog we’ve ever had LOOOOVES my chair, and I hate that they love it, ugh. In an effort to not need to reupholster it so often, I put the Invisible Fence deterrent rock next to it for a while to keep him off of it. The little dog can go on it because she won’t destroy it. He won’t go in DH’s chair because it’s a rocker recliner. Sometimes he’ll go in the other stationary chair in our family room occasionally, but I don’t really like him on the furniture. One of our previous labs used to love to sleep in the bathtub at our old house! It was her most preferred sleeping spot in the summer when it was hot. It was so funny, we would get ready for bed, brush teeth, etc. in our tiny bathroom and then once we were done and out of there she would just hop right in the tub and go to sleep! ETA: I think my little dog would love one of those fluffy, beanbag looking fur covered calming dog beds that are advertised on Facebook. I think that would be right up her alley.

My Great Pyrenees took ownership of my ottoman and sleeps there or on the floor at the bottom of the stairs. He had multiple beds over the years but likes the furniture and the floor.
