My son races dirt bikes so the days are long and hot. After an hour or so most of the ice has already melted. I don’t expect it to retain the ice all day as it’s opened a decent amount for food and drinks, but it seems like before the day has even started the ice is already melted.
It does need to be large, 45 qt at least.
Best suggestions?
Thanks!
ETA ~ I know Yeti seems to be the good standard, but if I can get a really good one for under $200 I’d be happy.

RTIC coolers are supposed to be as good as yetis, lower price. i see them and another brand (that i can't remember right now) in my camping groups all the time.
ETA the other one is very busget friendly, Coleman Extreme.

Yes, Yeti is an excellent cooler, but there is a drawback.
Those suckers are HEAVY even before you add ice, drinks and food. Heavy as in I can't even lift it full. They also don't hold a ton because the walls are so thick (hence the heavy, LOL).
Other than that, I am not much help.

RTIC is a local brand to me, so I have quite a bit of their products. The local news did a comparison between Yeti, RTIC, and another brand, and RTIC out-performed or performed the same as Yeti on the products tested(ice stays colder longer in the tumbler). My fridge broke earlier this year, and my RTIC cooler kept ice for several days.

A blogger one of DDs follows using the Yeti, RTIC, Orca, etc coolers for long trips and she puts frozen bottles in hers 36 hours prior to putting in food in. It stays much cooler. Also, your ice may not be solid. Some of the bagged ice in our area melts very quickly.

Also freeze some gallon jugs of water, or half gallons. Cover your cooler with a thick towel or blanket.
And yes as stated above, put ice in the cooler before use.

Earlier this summer we bought a 65qt Lifetime cooler for our road trips (but then couldn't use it this year for our big trip to CO because we had to change from a van to a sedan at the last minute...). We did use the cooler over the 4th of July weekend and while the ice did melt (packed Saturday morning and melted by Monday morning) we did get into quite a bit over those few hot days. I know it's available at several retailers such as Cabelas, Dicks & Bass Pro, but it's also for sale on the Sam's website for at least $100 less. I think we paid $130? It's heavy when empty, but not break-your-back heavy.

Another brand to consider is Polar Bear Coolers. They make both hard and soft sided coolers. I have a few of the soft sided coolers that I used to transport meats to our last overseas posting. They kept frozen meats hard as a rock for the 30+ hrs I was traveling. Their prices don't look much better than Yeti though. My fridge broke earlier this year, and my RTIC cooler kept ice for several days. I'm currently doing this with our Yeti cooler. Dang fridge broke yesterday and the earliest LG can get out here to repair it is Monday morning.

I use a $40 cooler I picked up a couple of years back for beer and soft drinks when we have a backyard party. Like others said above, I freeze water bottles and also put water in balloons and freeze those about two or three days ahead of time. I have gone out in the morning after the party to bring the drinks inside and the bottles and balloons still have chunks of ice in them.

I was just researching coolers today! I compared an Otterbox, Yeti, RTIC and Igloo BMX. I decided on the Otterbox cooler because the ratings are high and has the features I need. AND I am getting free using my credit card points!

What is really sad and super terrible for the earth is that a thick Styrofoam cooler with a tight fitting lid works really, really well. Like ice cream for hours well. I wouldn't care to buy one but I had something frozen shipped to me and it never occurred to me to ask about the packaging.

Hands down Yeti....sorry!! I am not familiar with Yeti, so looked it up. You can tell I haven't bought a cooler in a long time!
What makes them so good that they are worth the price? Our coolers are pretty old, and ice melts pretty fast. But I don't know if this would fit into the budget, so wanting to learn more.

The Yeti 45 in Desert Tan is $299.99 other colors top $1000.00.
We have the Coleman one and it was like $60.
Haven't had it out in hot 90° plus days but it works great for us.

They do work extremely well.

We freeze water 3/4 full in empty vinegar containers. We can keep things real cold in the cooler right up to the next day

When I pack my cooler I tend to put frozen water bottles in it, but the ex-husband packs the big one (I don’t go to all of the races). Considering they’ve been racing for over a dozen years and he’s not doing the frozen water bottle thing yet I doubt he’ll listen to me now. My son might though as he has more sense than his dad. His dad thinks a cooler with a broken lid full of sloshing water is just fine. 🙄
Thanks for all of the suggestions! My son asked for a cooler for his birthday so I will start researching all the suggestions.

You might consider a smaller cooler for replacement ice that is kept closed and out of the sun until needed. The ice will last longer if the lid is not opened. Also, be sure to refrigerate the food and drinks the night before so they also act as ice until needed.

The bigger the ice the slower it Will melt. So ice blocks or jugs of frozen water are better than bags of cubed ice.

there are several coolers similar to yeti that perform just as well. costco had one recently.
no need to spend all that money on a yeti.

I don’t know about the other brands, but I swear by my Yeti. I am always amazed by how long things stay super cold/frozen in it. I think it’s worth the money.

Ozark Trail soft sided cooler, the one with the tight zipper, does the same job as a Yeti for $40. It can hold 24 cans. Link

We have one similar to this that we bought at Walmart. It keeps fish frozen on a two day drive from Minnesota to Virginia. I think they is is the ice. We freeze water in milk cartons. The square shape uses the space efficiently and it takes much longer to melt than cubes. It also keeps everything dry.

Why balloons? I’m intrigued. Is this a special Pea hack?? I use balloons, especially for a party, because things don't get water-logged as the ice melts. I toss them back in the freezer after each use and they are well frozen for the next go round.
I use water bottles as well but I like the smaller ice to pack around the cans of beer and pop.
