So, about an hour ago, all the smoke detectors in my 2 story house start going off. I wasn't cooking, burning candles, didn't smell smoke, but they were sounding and they were loud. I hustled the kids and the dog into the car and called 911. We waited in the street, the fire engine arrives and the firefighters do a walk through, check the attic, etc. While they are in the house, the smoke detectors stop sounding. They asked about the alarm system, which is installed, but we don't have service, we've never even touched it. We are renting this house while we are building and I don't know much about it. The firefighters said they didn't find anything in their search, they said it might have something to do with the alarm system or the detectors might be going bad. I was feeling very foolish at that point, like maybe they thought I was a hysterical woman (they didn't do anything to indicate this, they were very nice). So, can I have some pea reassurance? Did I do the right thing? Has this happened to anyone else and did you find out the cause? I will admit, I'm still a little nervous even though they assured me everything was okay.

I wouldn't have called 911. I would check things myself and if needed call my DH. Could your's have gone off due to carbon monoxide? I also would have tried changing the batteries in one to see if that solved the problem.

I came home one time to all my alarms going off, animals upset. I too called the fire dept.( now ex, husband was a firefighter) it was nothing. If the detectors are all hardwired and connected when one goes bad they all go off. I didn't know that they have about a 10 year life span and will have to be replaced. You did the right thing better to be safe.
