Holy Cow! She is okay, but had to have emergency surgery to remove the effected tissue.
Saturday night I noticed her licking an area on her thigh. When I looked did not see anything but felt kind of a raised ring. Figured it was Ringworm. Sunday the fur started to come off just a bit so got and applied ring worm medicine and kept the area clean.
By Monday it was getting a bit red and raw looking. Ointment did not seem to be working and it was actually getting worse so called the vet. Got an appointment for today. Tuesday it was still red and started to get shiny but not terribly worse. It did not seem to bother her so held out for the Thursday appointment. Still thought it was Ringworm.
When I got up yesterday it looked like something from a horror zombie movie. It was twice as big and a deep crater had formed, so deep I could actually see some muscle. I called the vet and brought her in. As soon as the vet walked in the room he knew what it was a Brown Recluse bite. He was surprised because he just had another dog in with a Brown Recluse bite and they are not very common where we live. He operated on her right away.
She has about a 6-7 inch incision, poor Greyhound girl. She is doing well, not messing with the stitches but spending a lot of time in the bedroom. She comes out every now and then to visit and is waggy and hungry.
Exterminator is coming tomorrow to check the house and to give the yard an extra treatment. So scary, never considered a spider bite.

Poor doggo. My mother had a serious brown recluse bite many years ago that required surgery.
Meanwhile, I caught a spider this morning that may or may not have been a brown recluse--I can't quite figure out its markings. We get lots of wolf spiders, but this one looked different. I trapped it and let it go in my flower beds, but might have thought twice about it after reading your story for the sake of my own pups.

Poor girl💕💕 I'm so glad you got her to the vet in time. A brown recluse bite is what killed my mom in 2001. It was horrific.

Poor girl. So glad the vet knew what it was and how to fix it, even if it did involve surgery.

awwww poor baby. And poor you for having to deal with it. Also, I'm laughing at "waggy and hungry". Do rescue greyhounds have tails? I can't picture in my head if they do. If not, I can just see "waggy"....the whole butt wag that's the cutest thing. I'm glad she's okay!

Oh gracious, that is SO scary. So thankful she is going to be okay. Wow. My exterminator just does 1/2 of our acre (around the house). The other half we call the "dog park," and he doesn't do anything over there. Maybe I need him to. Oh my word. So scary, and you can bet I will be checking my boys more closely. Hugs to your precious pup!

If not, I can just see "waggy"....the whole butt wag that's the cutest thing. I'm glad she's okay! Ha, Greyhounds have super long, bony, and furiously waggy tails. So long and bony they can develop a condition referred to has "happy tail". Happy Tail is when they wag and their bony tails hit a wall or other very solid object, the skin splits near or on the end. When it happens it looks like a crime scene.
I have had a few Greyhounds with this condition - bandaging is a challenge. Sometimes if the condition persists, they have to have part of their tail amputated.
