If you were getting the first vaccine now, which one would you get? Why?

At the time I got mine the suggestion was to take the one that you could get. It was hard to get one back in February. I got Moderna and so did my husband. My daughters got Pfizer. If I was looking for the fastest way to be considered fully vaccinated I would go with J&J.

Moderna because it has 3x the mRNA than Pfizer.

Moderna or Pfizer
If there was a lack of supplies I'd do any of them.

Moderna because it has 3x the mRNA than Pfizer. Where is this information? Article LinkIt's a very long, yet informative article. "Each dose of Pfizer’s contains 30 micrograms of vaccine. Moderna went with a much larger dose of vaccine, 100 micrograms. It means the company is using a little more than three times as much vaccine per person as Pfizer is."

Yet they both provide about the same % of protection from COVID. From the article Each dose of Pfizer’s contains 30 micrograms of vaccine. Moderna went with a much larger dose of vaccine, 100 micrograms. It means the company is using a little more than three times as much vaccine per person as Pfizer is. And yet, they aren’t getting better results. The government’s vaccine development program, formerly called Operation Warp Speed, has asked Moderna to test if it could lower the dosage of its vaccine without eroding the vaccine’s protection. Interesting. All I know is that given a choice of the 3, I would not get J&J.

I'd get either Pfizer or Moderna, because they have the highest percentage of coverage.

Well, I didn't read the question fully before answering and selected Pfizer. Because I had the Pfizer vaccine. It would still be my first choice, with a faster window to fully vaccinated (3 weeks between shots instead of 4 for Moderna). @foxy , the Moderna dose is 3 times the Pfizer dose, but their protection is the same. I believe they are testing to see if they can lower the dosage amount without impacting the effectiveness.

We only have the choice of Pfizer or Astra Zeneca here in Australia. The Pfizer is only available to people under 60yo (it was 50yo initially). Most people want Pfizer because poor old AZ got a bad rap. I waited until I was eligible for Pfizer.

Thank you. I misunderstood. I read that article incorrectly I guess. I also assumed that's why most covid break throughs were with the Pfizer shot. And most people I know had a stronger reaction with Moderna than Pfizer.

In the context of clinical trials, about 0.04% of people given the Pfizer vaccine got infected with SARS-CoV-2, versus about 0.07% with Moderna and 0.59% with Johnson & Johnson. The early reports that said Moderna had fewer breakthrough cases was only based on a few people in a small sample. However Johnson and Johnson has continually had the higher breakthrough cases

I chose the Pfizer choice because that's what I got and I had pretty much no side effects ... a win in my books!

There are several studies that show Moderna has better efficacy against Delta then Pfizer. But both hold up very well against hospitalization/death. I would choose an mRNA vaccine over the J&J any day…

Well, I didn't read the question fully before answering and selected Pfizer. Because I had the Pfizer vaccine. I messed up the question, too, but I was able to change my answer. If doing it again, I would choose Moderna right now only because I have read that there does seem to be some limited data that the vaccine immunity wanes slower. On the other hand, if I had to again spend many hours hunting down appointments, I would probably again just take whatever was available.

My answer isn't an option on your poll -- I'd choose either Pfizer or Moderna. (I had Moderna because that's what was offered to teachers in my county. My dh had Pfizer because that's what was offered at the State Department. Dd had Moderna because that's what was offered to volunteers with the Medical Corps.)
I suppose if I was being offered J&J as my only option I might take it, although I'd rather hold out for one of the other two.

I got mine back in March, and I did not have a choice. I (along with one daughter and my parents) all got Moderna. My hubby and other two daughters got Pfizer. Again they didn't have a choice. I was the last in my family to get the vaccine. Everyone else got theirs in January/early February.

It’s not a choice, but I’d take Pfizer or Moderna. They seem to have the best efficacy against the Delta variant, but I know that could change with the next variant.

DBF got his #1 3 weeks ago, and got Pfizer. He didn’t choose, it’s what Walgreens had. He got #2 Friday, and we had to go to 2 different Walgreens to find one. Our first choice location was out.

Pfizer is what DH, DD and I got (it was what was available, but I was glad to get it) DS (fire/EMT) was in the first group in our state to get vaccinated. He got Moderna Looking forward to when we can get the boosters! Just another added layer of protection!

I got Pfizer and that’s still what I would choose if I had to do it over again. I had a very minimal reaction to either shot.

That doesn't mean that the actual " message" of the RNA is any stronger. The mRNA instructions contained within the liquid in the vial is the same .Once that instruction (mRNA) is inside the muscle cells, the cells use them to make the protein piece. After the protein piece is made, the cell breaks down the instructions and gets rid of the instructions. The protein piece will be the same in both Moderna and the Pfizer as they both have virtually the same efficacy.

You made it so much easier to understand. Thank you!

Moderna or Pfeizer. However, I think I'd wait longer between the two shots as they have done in the UK. There are studies showing that it creates a better immune response.

I wanted Johnson and Johnson because just one shot and fully vaccinated in 2 weeks. But they paused it the day before I was eligible. I was able to pick the vaccine in April by going to a Rite Aid that had the vaccine I wanted. Started out picking one with Pfizer, but switched to Moderna. I am happy with Moderna. No one in our family (us and three kids ages 18-23) had any side effects from Moderna or Pfizer.
With the knowledge I have now, I would have been fine with any vaccine. I was hesitant at first (but still signed up the day I was eligible) but now am very pro-vaccine and I get so mad at anti vaxxers! I have come a long way since April!

I got Moderna, and I'd get it again because of its coverage against Covid and the variants. Its numbers seem to be the best.
