Our classroom floor was redone during our hiatus and they did tile with a big ole dark grey carpet square in the middle of the room. The carpet is fused to the floor and not going anywhere. We tried putting our cute rug with the square in the middle and letting outside down on it (the squares and letters help the little kids have a spot and can help us keep them distanced) but it looks ridiculous as it is rectangular and the grey is square.
We want to get movable squares instead of the cute carpet, but they are way out of our price range -we have to get a new computer as ours is missing and that is taking up our classroom improvement fund. Any ideas on where to source some or cheaper alternatives?

I know teachers used to check with the local home improvement stores to see if they could get their carpet samples. Not sure if they are bug enough but what about the foam floor tiles that people use for kids or home gym floors.

What size? Would the carpet samples work? If I remember at Home Depot and Lowes has them. Maybe ask?

Do you have any type of neighborhood or county or town FB group? or a local Buy Nothing group? Everyone in my area is jumping to help teachers get the year started and I suspect if any of these groups had a request like this people would come through to help.

I'd look at using sit spots on that gray square of carpet instead of putting another carpet on top. Depending on the pile of the carpet, you can either use ones that are like velcro or ones that are more like a heavy sticker. Either way, the kids will pull them up gradually and they'll have to be replaced, but some of that can be mitigated by teaching them to sit right on the spot and cover it with their bottom (I tell the littles to hide their spot from me).

How is that carpet going to be sanitized on a daily basis? Especially with children sitting on it each day.

When I was arranging seating for kinders in the library, each had a little (4") piece of velcro that stuck to the carpet. I had 45 kinders to arrange seating for story time and that little dot of velcro kept them from crowding and everyone could see.
That might solve part of your problem for giving each child a spot on the square. Those velcro strips can be moved as needed.

We have all new custodians this year, hopefully they are better able to help. Our morning custodian was great, but he often had to empty our trash and vacuum for us as the night custodian never did.

Since this rug is probably never going to be replaced I don't want to mess it up the first day we use it.

I will check nextdoor neighbor, I have a fake account on Facebook with a crazy name, I am not sure anyone would take me seriously there.
Thank you for all the suggestions!

If you have never used velcro, it comes in two strips, one has the "cling" parts and the other is the "receiver." I used only the cling part and face down, it clings to the carpet. When you peel it up, it just leaves carpet behind.

Perfect. We will give that a try!

Honestly I would check around with flooring companies or carpet installers to see if they have some carpet samples they want to offload. I like the foam tile idea too, those can be picked up in packs at home improvement stores or sometimes I’ve seen them at Costco pretty reasonably priced.
