Dd is having her bat mitzvah next month and older dd and I are desperate for two dresses - one for Friday evening that’s more conservative and one for the Saturday service and party that I can cover with a shall or bolero and then reveal for party.
Everywhere I look the dresses are so barfy. What is up with this exaggerated sleeve trend. Yuck! I can’t even get my soon to be 16 year old excited about anything. For her bat mitzvah I wore a Ted baker dress. Our outlet has nothing so out of desperation I tried the regular store and I can’t believe how ugly everything is with puffed sleeves. br] Any ideas of where to look. For the last one I also had an Aqua dress from Bloomingdales. I could order in line but really the only dept store we have here is Nordstrom, which is still stuck in summer mode.
If I don’t want puffed sleeves, smocked waist, or extra loose it’s hard to find anything. What about just classic shape.

Try Macy’s. We only tried on floor length dresses but they had a good selection of classy/classic looking dresses.

Order multiple dresses online and try them on at home. Or, if you want the I store experience, ship them to the store and try them on there. It’s the best way to shop, IMO.

Try Nordstrom. You can call ahead & ask for a personal shopper to help you.

Order online - there's a reason brick and mortar stores are dying. You have plenty of time and just make sure you work with stores with free return policies and order a bunch to try on.

Any chance you can make the dresses from the last one work again? Like can they be restyled to not look the same? I know what you mean about all of the fussy sleeves and tiers on dresses just now. I just like a classic look.

I just like a classic look. I thought about this. I could. Little dd wants this event to be special to her and it’s already going to be so difficult because of Covid and she won’t be able to do half of what she wants to do or half half as many as she wants. So I thought a fresh look would help. I don’t want puffed sleeves or an oversized look.

Sorry I didn't catch that you were in Canada. I'd absolutely set up a time with a personal shopper at Nordstrom and be very specific what you're looking for - I assume they also have that in Canada? Nordstrom also has a ton online, do they allow free delivery to your local store?

Could be something you do together.

I've always had a lot of success at Modcloth. I don't know about shipping to Canada though...

I don’t want to sound like a jerk but I doubt a kid is going to care or maybe even notice if their mom wears a dress again. If you’re not liking what you’re finding, rewear what you have and accessorize it differently.

Modcloth shipping to Canada Well, ModCloth doesn't have a base in Canada yet, but they did make those unpleasant parts of shipping a little better for us Canadians. Now, you can pay guaranteed duties and taxes at checkout – and lower shipping fees. If you spend less than $100 CAD, express shipping is an extra $10 CAD.
Dress suitable for the formal look
Wear a bolero with this one

Bridal shop for semi formal dresses, though time would be a factor.

DD and I had great luck at Macy's last spring for "event" (graduations, weddings, etc.) dresses. They had some beautiful sheath-style dresses that made DD look like a million bucks. There were also many very silly dresses, but we had plenty of good ones from which to choose.
I see now that you can't do Macy's... Is there another large department store?

how about the bay? normally this time of year would have tons of dresses in markdown from prom/summer weddings. not sure about with covid?
some of those modcloth dresses were super-cute!!!
i have had good luck with christmas party/dresses for weddings at value village - people generally have only worn a couple of times at the most before donating. a gown for $20-25?!? definitely worth weeding thru some to see if anything suitable. the store sorts by size too, just go to your size (maybe one up and one down, just in case) and grab anything that might work!
last time i was there, no trying on, but they take returns if tags still on, not sure if change rooms are open now.

Try Amazon. They ship fast and have an easy return policy. I found several options for a party I went to over the summer and settled on one that I absolutely loved.

I’ve had good luck at JCPenney—I ordered a few for DSs wedding when I couldn’t find anything I liked elsewhere. Found a few I liked and fit and was able to return what I didn’t want locally.

Have you looked at Nordstrom.ca? They don't have the full range of what Nordstrom.com offers, but at least shipping and returns are free, are there are no duties.
I also find The Bay to be surprisingly good for dresses. They have lots to select from online, and then I return to store whatever doesn't work out.
