He decided that since he can’t drive but wants to work that he would start his own business. He asked to have the supplies he needs be a Xmas gift. He wants to make candles. He’s done all sorts of research amd priced supplies amd website, created a PayPal account and Tik Tok. So he was so excited that yesterday he wrote out a proposal for me to read about wanting the stuff now. My husband read the letter and said buy all the stuff now. We homeschool so I’m incorporating the business stuff into our math class when my husband interrupts and tells our kiddo that he would love to carry his candles on the tool truck because men often forget to buy their ladies gifts amd these candles would be perfect for that. My sons face lit up. So today we are going to open a bank account for him. His supplies are ordered and on the way. For those who don’t know, he has developmental issues, dyslexia, he doesn’t learn at normal speed. I’m trying to get him to his high school equivalency exam amd then community college classes. We had him tested and he has a below average iq which I know doesn’t mean anything but basically we’re prepared to support him well into adulthood. I’m so proud of him. I could burst. He’s been researching so much for this and I’m so happy I’m in a place where I can support him. Thanks for listening.

Love that he so enthusiastic about starting a business and that you both support him! Make sure that if your DH sells candles from his tool truck that he has a cooler/something to keep them in so that they don’t melt.

You have every reason to be proud! He’s really thought this out. Sounds like he’s got a good plan and his parents’ support will go a long way. Add me to the list, I would love to buy a candle too when he’s ready.

That's great! Sounds like he's really thought about it!
(If you think he can handle it, consider incorporating accounting into your homeschool program)

Way to go kiddo! Count me in for purchase.
I have a cousin with a below average iq. She knew at a young age what she wanted to do, and she worked hard to get there. She is world renown for her scientific work and has 3 PhDs.

I love that he is so motivated. At 17, all my son could think about was getting together with his friends to hang out and skateboard. I hope he loves making candles. When they are done, can you take a few pictures and show them to us? Or maybe link us to his site? I would love to see what he comes up with.

How awesome! It sounds like you and your DH have done a great job raising your son! Congratulations to him for thinking things through, developing a plan and a way to execute it and making plans to move forward. Sign me up as well to buy candles when he's open for business. And thanks for sharing - reading your post really made my day!

Screw the IQ test, he clearly is bright, thoughtful, and willing to work for what he wants. Way to go to your son (and to his rightfully proud parents )

Sounds like a wonderful idea! Congratulations, he seems to have a plan and a purpose and not many 17 year-olds have the drive to put a business together like that.

You said you were hoping to steer him toward community college. With some success thru this early endeavor, and you incorporating it into his curriculum, I bet something of interest shakes out. Perhaps the business side will florish, maybe he will want to fine tune ingredients from a science aspect, or he could turn out to be an epic salesman. Any of those could lead him towards careers where classes would benefit him.
I just love how this as been approached by all three of you.
