I agree with American Pie - Don McLean, and will add my choices -
Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas New Orleans is Sinking - The Tragically Hip Can't Smile Without You - Barry Manilow - I know, but it really is the best sing-along song ever.

Does no one else do location songs? LOL Indiana Wants Me, The Night Chicago Died, Lookin' Out My Back Door, Take Me Home, Country Roads, Rocky Mountain High, Gary, Indiana, etc? On a recent trip to Chicago, my son texted my daughter to ask, "Is mom singing "Gary, Indiana" yet" to find out if we were close to Chicago yet. LOL

I listen to showtunes or classical. I'm a road geek. I am fickle and change favorite genre often but currently I'm listening to Hamilton soundtrack on my 45 minute drive to work.

No-one’s mentioned Born To Be Wild yet? Get your motor runnin' Head out on the highway Looking for adventure In whatever comes our way………. Right? That was the first one I thought of when I saw the title of this thread! No road trip is complete without it, IMHO! I also like what jeremysgirl picked (Grateful Dead's Truckin') and Born to Run is also a must-have. (When I was in college, WMMS (Cleveland) played Born to Run every Friday night at 6 PM to kick off the weekend. So when I was driving home from OSU for a break or for the weekend, I always made sure to leave Columbus early enough to be back in MMS range before 6 so I could hear it and kick off the weekend right. ) As for other road songs, it depends on what I'm in the mood for - I also change genres a lot and love a wide range of music so it could be most anything...!

My first thought too! Both the Tom Cochrane version ... because I'm Canadian and it's the original ... and the Rascal Flatts version because it is awesome!

Summer of 69 is one I always think of for a road trip playlist.

I'm not a huge Fleetwood Mac fan so their songs would be out. I'm just going to pretend I didn't read that. On a recent trip to Chicago, my son texted my daughter to ask, "Is mom singing "Gary, Indiana" yet" to find out if we were close to Chicago yet. LOL I.love.this SO much! always made sure to leave Columbus early enough to be back in MMS range before 6 so I could hear it and kick off the weekend right. ) I see nothing wrong with that plan. Meatloaf :Paradise by the Dashboard Lights. Yes! Taping my toe impatiently waiting for: Kelly Clarkson Carrie Underwood Dixie Chicks Green Day (There's a rumor some of these CDs may have been in living in my car player since dinosaurs freely roamed the earth, but I refuse to confirm or deny it. ) There are a few kids songs we always had a great time with: All I Want Is A Proper Cup Of Coffee - Trout Fishing in America is probably at the top of our list Whenever we get near those Smoky/Blue Ridge mountains, out comes the Celtic, dulcimer, etc music. Nothing quite like that combination.

I am a radio channel surfer. If I were on the road and encoutered a no radio/lots of static, then I would plug my phone in and play my favorites list.

Our family loved Trout Fishing in America when the kids were little. Thinking of them also always reminds me of The Potato Song by Cheryl Wheeler ( link) - we had a mix CD with a whole bunch of songs like that on it. Definitely family favorites at the time!

Our family loved Trout Fishing in America when the kids were little. I think I saw them twice. I have very vague memories of this duo in a tiny hole-in-the-wall bar in SE Texas once during our yearly night-out-without-kids (aka our anniversary), must have been before they became known. The second time was in Delaware and the stroller parking was overflowing! Such a contrast. We regularly took long roadtrips and my husband was the one who most often got through the proper cup of coffee song the best. Such good times! I don't care how old I get. I think fragments of these songs will continue to pop out for years to come. Always remember, when in doubt, the answer is Six.

That seems like a very strange list of driving songs! What makes a good driving song?
I tend to listen to more mellow music, usually a bit of folk rock/pop when I'm driving. This is to help keep me calm and zen if the traffic is bad, and also so I stay on the speed limit. I once got pulled over for speeding because I was listening to something a bit heavy and got carried away by the music and didn't realise I was speeding. I think it was 'Killing In The Name Of' by Rage Against the Machine or 'Plush' by Stone Temple Pilots. Luckily they let me off with a warning.
I would have to put 'Wide Open Road' by The Triffids, or the cover by WPA, on top of my list. And also 'To Her Door' by Paul Kelly, and 'Bow River' by Cold Chisel.

The song that means the most to me while driving is Chris Rea's Driving home for Christmas because it was a long journey mostly in the dark. It was particularly poignant when I heard it on the radio and it was the first year I wasn't travelling home.

Meatloaf :Paradise by the Dashboard Lights. Hands Down You beat me to it. Great song for a road trip. Also so one I love: I Drove All Night (to get to you) by Roy Orbison. I love his greatest hits for trip music because his gorgeous over the top vocals need the volume up high, and enthusiastic singing along.

Did you know Keith just turned 70 last week? Late DH's favorite of sorts was Funeral For a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding. Had to be together. Almost always got him in trouble driving when younger.

I can agree with:
5. Eye of the Tiger - Survivor
1. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
I would also add Love Shack by the B-52s. I love to listen mostly to upbeat music when I am driving long distances, although I guess Bohemian is not necessarily upbeat, lol

Since the 1980s the first required song has been Willie Nelson's On the Road Again.

They are more for the time when you've broken away from traffic and it's just you and the open road- on the way to someplace fun! That's how I view driving songs - I have a six hour drive to see my parents and I need something to sing along with to keep me alert on a sometimes dull drive on the highway. When my kids were little we use to listen to a lot of Joe Scruggs and Fred Penner. We still remember all the words to Goo Goo Ga Ga

We do lots of road trips and have like a 30-hour playlist/work in progress with many of the songs listed. But the one that DH and I both always immediately start singing to is Danny's Song

I like dark side of the moon by pink floyd or the doors..the beach boys or classical music. I'm old.

I’ve always favored some AC/DC. Marry for the Money is one.And The Clash’s Should I Stay or Should I Go is a great driving song. What I Like About You, by The Romantics is another one.
