I just used an avocado half from one week ago! I feel like I should buy a lottery ticket. I wrapped a half (with the pit) tightly in plastic wrap. I looked at it today and decided I'd have it on my salad. I scraped a tiny bit of brown off the top, but the rest was perfect. This is the longest I've ever had an avocado last. Mind you I'm in MN and avocados cost on average about $2 a piece.
Do you have any tricks to keep them longer than a day or two?

Nope. I just make sure that I use it all same day.

We rub lemon juice over the exposed part and then place it flat on a surface of an avocado keeper and keep it in the fridge.

i just saw a hack on tiktok but havent tried it - they said to submerge the cut part in water? so if you cut it in half, put the cut side down in a glass of water, in the fridge.

Once mine are almost ripe (usually the day after I buy them), they go in the refrigerator. They keep several days there. I buy two at a time and eat within the week.

Spray avocado oil spray on it and it will stay good for days. I saw this helpful tip on TikTok and it actually does work.

I think our grocery store keeps them in the refrigerator before putting them out as they are often cold. We're paying 2 for $5 right now. Years ago DH and I owned a house that had two gigantic avocado trees with the largest avocadoes I've ever seen. We would give our neighbors bags of them all the time. When we sold, the people who bought the house never shared with the neighbors and eventually cut down the trees.

When I am saving half an avocado, I leave the pit in. An hispanic guy I used to work with taught me that trick.

I sometimes vacuum seal the other half, just have to be careful not to put too much pressure on it, so use a gentle cycle on manual. I really want an avocado now on fresh bread with salt and pepper. I used to add onion but can’t eat them raw any more.
Does anyone else think the taste is a bit reminiscent of a soft boiled egg? Probably not.

I eat the other half.
Almost every morning I eat an egg and cheese omelette with hot sauce and a sliced avocado.

They have a very thin skin, so can't be sold commercially. They are so buttery and delicious! I like them way better than Haas. We eat tons of avocado and I make epic quacamole!

An hispanic guy I used to work with taught me that trick. At least 5 days a week I have half an avocado for lunch and leave the other half, pit in, sitting on the island. On the rare occasion DH doesn't eat it with his dinner, I put it in the fridge to eat the next day. Sometimes there might be a slight browning , but it doesn't impact the taste. I love the bags of teeny, tiny avocados from TJ's.

I don’t do well keeping fruit trees alive—we’ve tried to plant lemon and lime trees and have moved into houses with tangelo and lemon trees. So far, none of them have made it. I would love to have any fruit tree in my yard but if I had to choose, I’d have a lime tree and an avocado tree. I hope there was a good reason they cut down the avocado tree. Maybe it got a fungal infection like the tangelo tree we had when we moved into our previous house? I hate to think they chopped it just to chop it!

Besides the avocado trees we had peaches, apricots, oranges, lemons, blackberries, etc. It was an incredible backyard ~ now we have a mandarin orange bush in a pot that gives us a few oranges every year.

I buy them and then freeze them when they are ripe. They keep a LONG time. You just thaw and enjoy. They are a bit mushier because of the water content but they are totally fine.

Around here the avocado is gone the moment someone puts it on the cutting board.

I keep the pit in the half and Saran Wrap it and it stays pretty fresh for a few days. I just scrape off the brown part and it’s good to go!

I tried that last week! It mostly worked. The avocado I had was a little mushy so it got a bit watery but it did add 2 days in the fridge for me. I'll probably do this from now on because none of the other tricks like plastic wrap and lemon juice have never worked for me.

Growing up we had an enormous avocado tree that dominated our backyard and it would give us tons of fruit. Hardly any would go to waste, whatever we didn't eat we shared. It was so big that our backyard was mostly dirt because of all the shade it cast. Then one day the local hospital, which was located a street over from us bought up the houses on the other side of us and they built up a huge new tower. Not long after that our beautiful tree stopped bearing fruit. We couldn't figure out what had happened because the building wasn't really casting shade on it or anything. Then someone told us whatever tree was polinating our avocado tree either must have gotten cut down or the building was blocking our tree. My parents sold that house over 30 years ago but whenever I'm in the neighborhood I peek to see if the avocado tree is still there and it is. Like an old friend.

I have a large avocado tree that keeps me (and friends) supplied a good portion of the year. It’s such an amazing feeling to walk out side and pick avocados - even if I have to wait a few days to eat them. My tree produces a lot of what the grocery store would consider large avocados. I do have friends whose tree produces the jumbo avocados and they are at least double the size of mine.
I live costal SoCal don’t have a large yard but I have avocado, lemon, lime, pomegranate, kumquat, orange, tangerine and plum trees. It’s so nice!
