My shih-tzu is 14 years old. He’s had an average of 6 seizures a year for the past 4 years. However he’s had 4 seizures in the past week. My mom says there is medicine to help. I am calling the vet on Monday for an appointment.
I’m so nervous. I’ve gone through so much since I’ve had him and am no where near willing to lose him.

My late dog starting having grand mal seizures when she was 10 years old. After the MRI and spinal tap ruled out brain tumor and cancer, the doggie neurologist said the cause was epilepsy and she put her on an anti-seizure medication called "keppra". Keppra really helped cause as far as we know, she never had another seizure. The neurologist stressed the importance of preventing seizures cause seizures fry the brain. (My dog died at age 15 of bladder cancer.)
The cost of keppra was reasonable. (It's a human drug.) I paid $25 for a 40 day supply at Costco with a goodrx coupon. But at CVS, the cost was $180 for a 40 day supply even with a goodrx coupon. So be sure to shop around for any medication cause prices really vary.
Good luck!

Mine had them for 10 years and they were generally only a couple a year, but once in a while, she'd have a few in a week and then not again for months.

I had a dog that started having seizures at age 3. They never could find the cause. He was on many different meds to try to get them to stop but they only got worse. We had to put him down at age 4. It was horrific. I am sure there are meds that can help your little pup especially since you haven't had to use any yet in all of these years. Hugs and prayers!

My daughters dog had a couple a year and then they became more frequent. The vet put him on two pills a day and he hasn’t had any since. I hope your dog can get help for his, too.

I had a Whippet who had seizures all his life. He lived until he was 13 years old. He was on a Phenobarbital and was careful with his diet. There were time when he had periods of more seizures and we added Potassium Bromide for a bit until they subsided. My thought are with you and know how difficult this can be.

Thank you all for advice and good thoughts. Definitely helps to know others have gone through this as well.

I'm sorry to hear this. My dog has had 2 seizures - both related to certain flea and tick medications. Once we pulled him off the meds, he never had them again. It's so scary.

How is his health, overall? My 15+ year old shihtzu also had occasional seizures, but when he started having them that frequently, we know it was time. It would take him longer and longer to recover each time, and he would lose his bowels and bladder. We never knew what was causing them, because he was almost 16 (and completely blind), and I didn’t want to put him through a lot of testing to find out. He let me know it was time to let him go. Watching a pet suffer is so difficult.

DD33 has given seizure meds to many dogs that she's watched in a kennel she worked in. She said it does help.
I had experience with a dog that had seizures. This was a family that I nannied for. When the dog went through the seizures, the dad (if he was home) would clear everything away from the dog in case he was thrashing. If the dog was on the couch, he'd put him on the floor. Then he practically held the dog (this dog was a medium sized Italian Greyhound). He'd just tell him, "Sssshh, it's okay. It's okay, Charlie..." and then after 1 minute at most, it was over and the dog was tired. DD wondered why they never looked into the seizure meds for the dog, as he was on the young side and it could have been prevented.
ShihTzu's are so special to me. I had a black and white one. I do hope that the vet can give the pup the seizure meds and have it for the future. I'm so sorry that you've been through other trying times with him. Good luck. xo
