My dermatologist prescribed a cream for me that my insurance doesn't cover. She called it in to CVS. My 2 options were going to be: - buy it directly from the derm's office for $75 (cash, out of pocket, no insurance) -buy it out of pocket from CVS for $53. So that was the option I was going to go with.
I was waiting on the drs. office to try working with CVS one more time to submit, but they called today and said it wouldn't work. The nurse said I could use Good RX to try to lower the cost. She briefly explained it to me and I downloaded it on my phone.
I'm seeing it available at multiple pharmacies in the area for anywhere from $41 to $60.
So, my first question is, do I just call the doctor and ask her to send the prescription to Costco (the one that costs the least) instead of using CVS and if so, how do I know for sure that the $41 will be the cost and not something higher?
How do I get this price? I know I need to pay out of pocket and it won't be submitted to insurance, but can I still use our HSA card?
Do I need to have the prescription cancelled out at CVS in order for it to process at Costco?
I'm confused... can someone explain this whole process to me? If I can actually get it to work, I have another prescription that I've been paying $111 copay for, but I looked that up on Good RX and I can get that other one for $33... hoping this is an easy process. Thanks!

I use GoodRx all the time - and am fully insured with BCBS. Super easy process. Just tell the pharmacist you want to use the GoodRx coupon (either app or printed). It will take a couple of minutes while they run it through the system, but that’s it. The price you see in the app is the price you pay. Just be sure that you are selecting the right amount of medicine (30 day vs 90 day, etc) you price your Rx.
To get the Rx to the less expensive pharmacy, have your doctor send it in to them. Don’t worry about the one at CVS. I only use our HSA card to pay for prescriptions so no worries about that.
My insurance wanted $196 for a 90 day Rx of my blood pressure medicine. With Good Rx I pay $39/90 days. I run every Rx we get through the app to make sure I’m getting the best price. Also, leaving CVS for the pharmacy at HEB was a big savings. CVS is very expensive, even with insurance.

CVS can transfer the Rx for you so that you don’t have to have the office redo the script. When filling non-urgent prescriptions especially, I often ask for a paper copy so that I can take the time to research and decide where to fill. My physicians have always been understanding and willing to do that even when they are set up to send them electronically from the electronic medical record.

GoodRx is an incredible help. If it's a new prescription, your doctor will have to send it to Costo. If it's a refill, they can get the information from CVS. The price that GoodRx shows for the meds is what you pay in that store. There's no hidden fees or anything. Make sure you have your zip code in and the correct dosage/quantity for the meds you're searching for as that makes a difference in price. In my experience, CVS and Walgreens are always significantly higher in price than Costco/Sams and local grocery stores.

I am on a hormone patch to control my hot flashes, it’s cost $600 for three months but the GoodRx coupon lowers the total coast to $85

I use it for my cat's medication at Walmart. It's $21 there and $100 elsewhere. My vet helped me set it up. If you have the correct dosage/quantity, as @pbandj said, that's the price you pay. A very helpful program.

You'll just need to show them the coupon on your phone at the pharmacy when you pick it up. They'll be familiar with it and can help you if you're confused about what they need - GoodRx is extremely common.
