Update: I have spent all morning cancelling our trip. My daughter got sent home with symptoms of COVID yesterday and I immediately took her for testing. I was sure it was just allergies, but this morning we got her positive test results. We are all vaccinated (her included) and we still wear our masks even at school. I've developed a sore throat this morning and have my own appointment this afternoon as does DS just in case. My kids' show closes Sunday, so there is no rescheduling. DH & I have both shed our own tears this morning and my daughter feels so guilty even though it is not her fault. Add to that, DH will have to handle our last two show performances on his own since he is not experiencing symptoms and we will pray we haven't spread it to any of our unvaccinated students or guests.
Short version - looking for restaurant/food suggestions in NYC. I have gone through the old threads but wanted to make sure I didn't miss any recommendations.
Long version - My DH and I teach high school theatre and one of our kids who started with us as a Freshman is now a Senior stage management major in New Jersey and working on her first professional show (Andrew Lloyd Webber's Masquerade which is premiering in New York). I've always told her I would be in the audience at her first professional show. We are literally flying in on the closing date because we close our own musical the day before, but we made it work. We are seeing Freestyle Love Supreme and Waitress while we are there. It will be DH's first trip to NYC and he is a huge foodie - so I'm looking for recommendations on where to eat.
The peas always have the best recommendations so here I am. We haven't had a lot of time to plan and we head out in just a few weeks.

I mainly just wanted to chime in and say that sounds like so much fun! I’m jealous.
I’m sure other peas will have better, more recent suggestions but I used to love Union Square Cafe.

There are so many excellent places to eat. Can you narrow down the areas of town you’ll be in? Do you want to dine in the theatre district before/after a show? Elsewhere? Are there particular types of foods that your husband is interested in? What kind of budget are you looking at?

We are not serious foodies, lol, so take what I have to say with a grain of salt. When we go to the theater, we look for restaurants that have good food, are aware of the curtain times and not touristy.
My favorite theater district restaurants are Dafni - a Greek restaurant right across from Port Authority. Fantastic food, not touristy; Amarone - an Italian restaurant on 9th Avenue; Orso - a high end Italian restaurant that draws celebrities: the last time we ate there Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen were at the next table; Joe Allen - everyone should eat there once. It's a Broadway icon and the food is good. You could always go to Joe Allen after your show for a drink - it's highly likely you'll see Broadway actors and their friends there afterwards.

Are there particular types of foods that your husband is interested in? What kind of budget are you looking at? We will definitely travel for a good meal. My husband was a culinary teacher for 10 years and loves good food - we don't do a lot of chains and "Americana" is probably his least favorite type of food with the exception of hot dogs - he strangely loves a good hot dog. Vietnamese, Greek and Indian rank high on the list of favorites. And bagels are definitely on my list. My kid's show is in White Plains and we are staying near(ish) the theatre district. We are also hoping to make a visit to the James Beard House in Greenwich Village. We are also planning to visit the 9/11 memorial. Other than the shows and those two things, we haven't made a lot of plans so we have a lot of flexibility - we are not above planning on trip based on food choices. We are planning to return with our kids sometime soon so we will save the more touristy attractions for another visit.

My favorite theater district restaurants are Dafni - a Greek restaurant right across from Port Authority. I'll second Dafni! The kids & I ate there after a show 8 years ago so I'm glad to hear it is still going.

I try my best to stay out of the Times Square area as much as possible (I work on 37th St so sometimes this is tough) but if you want a meal in that area, I'd recommend John's. Great pizza, though they don't do slices. Their pasta dishes are really good too. The restaurant is beautiful, it's a converted church. Food's a little pricey for what it is, but that's Times Square for you. They're on W. 44th St, between 8th and 9th Aves www.johnspizzerianyc.com/I also really like Coppelia, they're on W 14th St and 7th Ave. Cuban food, sort of a diner but more upscale, if that makes sense. ilovecoppelia.com/Not a restaurant, but if you find yourself in Chelsea, visit The Ink Pad! They're on W 19th St between 7th and 8th Aves, so about 7 or so blocks from the James Beard House and 5 1/2 from Coppelia. Tell them I sent you! www.shoptheinkpad.com/pages/ny-shopOh, if you want bagels - check out Zucker's, Ess-A-Bagel, Murray's, or Russ and Daughters, though I'm sure any place would have something good. I'm not sure if it'll be over when you come out, but Smorgasburg is also a lot of fun! They have a small handful of vendors at WTC every Friday but the big ones are in Brooklyn. I think Smorgasburg only runs through October though.

I'm just here to say I'm jealous. I haven't been to NYC since 2017 and I miss it! We ate at some of the best places on that trip, and all the ideas came from our hotel concierge. Every night we would check in with him, and he would suggest the best food. I'm still drooling over some ravioli we had at Azalea (224 W. 51st Street)

My daughter and I had a 36 hour NYC trip this summer.
Ess-a-Bagel - very good Ribalta Pizza - delicious, salads were amazing Chez Josephine - classic French near Times Square We loved Gregory's Coffee La Mercerie - swoon worthy interior, food very good. If you find yourself in Brooklyn, really should make a point to go sit at the Brooklyn Bridge Park, stop in at Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. Adorable and amazing malts and shakes.
Have fun!

It was delicious and the building is beautiful.

maryannscraps it's so good! Since it's such a large building and it takes almost no time to bake a coal-fired pizza, the wait isn't usually bad either.

Dim Sum in Chinatown is a must; our favorites are Nom Wah Tea Parlor and The Golden Unicorn. On the Upper West Side, we really enjoyed RedFarm for the Peking turkey at Thanksgiving. Across from Lincoln Center is a very good upscale Mexican restaurant, Rosa Mexicano; they used to make guac at the table but that may have changed with Covid. Can't beat Butter for a nice meal; or Gramercy Tavern. Ditto Balthazar. I love NYC; having a daughter in college there, we had a lot of chances to visit (and eat).

It's been so nice to read these recommendations and dream of traveling a little. I live on the opposite coast and don't get to visit NYC as often as I'd like, but I'm taking notes for the future. Once I sat a table next to John Gallagher Jr. who was appearing as Moritz in "Spring Awakening" at the time. I didn't bother him and I hadn't even seen the show yet as our tickets were for the next night, but it was exciting nonetheless. I don't remember the restaurant name though, so this is an unhelpful comment.

I'm heading to NYC next weekend for a milestone birthday!
The trip was originally planned around going to see Sleep no More, my absolute favorite show, but the opening got pushed back due to the COVID spike.
We're going to a comedy show in an actual barbershop that is apparently a really fun underground thing to do in the East Village. it's BYOB and lots of good comics come through there.
Looking at all of the restaurant suggestions! I always have to go to the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop when I'm in the city.
